Default Logical moves for the Rag Tag Fleet

Okay, there's all kinds of things that were glossed over in the original series or completely ignored just to keep the adventure pace of the show going.

I just wanted to start a thread and talk about stuff that SHOULD have happened in the context of the show that just never was adressed.

To start things off, the first thing that would have/should have/could have happened was upgrading all the ships in the fleet (as much as was possible) to keep up with the Galactica. Some wil refer to it as "bringing them up to lightspeed capability" or what have you, but it seems that if a ship was incapable of inter-stellar travel (not just interplanetary travel) it would have been left behind by sheer necessity.

Another logical step for the power-that-be in the fleet to take (instead of spending precious resources and time building robot daggits) would be to retro-fit defense implacements (read: GUNS) on as many ships in the fleet as possible. Unless there's something about the typical energy weapon system used that requires somthing unobtainable or unproducable on the voyage. Particular energy focusing crystals, special alloys, etc. It seems to me to be an ultimately logical move to try to increase the defensinve capability of those "cattle" that are following the battlestar.

Who's got more ideas?

Well, given the RTF's circumstances in "Saga", I doubt they can do much more than keep their current hulks flying, even allowing for the Mining, Foundry and Electronics ships. (I covered some aspects of the "non-FTL-capable" ships in my other post on FTL transits in the CBSG 'verse.)

What the RTF needs is a real yard, over a real, high-tech planet, and some kind of saleable income to buy either complete weapons systems or the needed materials to make them on the foundry ship, because the Viper pilots can't protect them forever.

What they could really use are a couple of good-sized liners: the ability to let people part on a semi-regular basis will go a long way towards easing the emotional strain the survivors have to be under.

I like one of the McGuffin-points you brought up: the robot-daggit. Given how a lot of people feel about pets - specifically dogs - and Dr. Wilker's comments about real daggits being used actively by the Colonial Military, why are there no daggits in the fleet?

You're right. The Galactica should have had a whole "daggit specialty squad" assigned to her as well as facilities and lodging for daggits.

Either that, or Wilker was "B-S"ing to justify this horrible waste of fleet resources.

Absolutely, I've often said some of the ships should be retro-fitted with 'teeth'.
#1 on my hit list would be the Celestra, She's packed full of electronics and has a forward shuttle bay. I'd want to immediately fabricate her an hanging landing bay on her underbelly, with lifts up to a converted forward bay, so she could carry a squadron of Vipers. Refit that front bay so that they can shoot out four or six abreast with hydraulic lifters readying a second launch to fire out a few seconds later. Returning fighters would land in the underbelly, and be 'lifted' up to the front launch bay. Focus her electronics towards scanning/jamming and stealth. Turrets on the landing bay, and two large swivelling 'turret' guns, one either side of the launch bay, plus some more on the top, and you're good to go! A destroyer escort for Galactica.

I doubt the parts used to built Muffit would have built a laser battery.
As to ships that lack FTL capability, or whose top speed is well below modern specs, instead of leaving them behind, perhaps for the Cylons to find and track them by, they could be gutted, and every bit of them scrapped for recycling. Even a rusting hulk can be of use when it comes to recycling metal.
