No this is not stupid (we have all been there), I would suggest that you go to the Blender Homepage or Blendernation, they have a series of simple introductions to making 3D images (make a cup/bowl and an engine)
.
That is the best way to get started - after you learn the basics and when you need specific advice on making parts that when us Blender users start our 'how to' lesson series.
They also have a few tutorials for Blender on SciFi-Meshes.com and 3dscifi.com
Good Luck

Listen Oovebei should You . The path he sends you on is Good (crap even in writing I cannot do a Yoda impersonation )
anyway there are no stupid questions (unless you ask what the best way to make a box) I know guys and Girls who have been using Lightwave for years and they are still learning .. and they get paid for it. Blender is the same, baby steps mate baby steps .. don't try to build the Viper first build the box !! (does that sound Yodaish )
I mean The Celestra model is my second mesh I am making that members can see
while in development .. have a look and see ...... and its looks ok .(I think so anyway) but it started with boxes, tubes, learning how to add something or subtracting .. and its all instinctive .. you ask be for details and I start to gibber and go weak at the knees , and run to the nearest Viper and I gone
bottom line is .. start easily start small because if you don't its the quickest way to become disillusioned and give up.. that what happened to me..
I sound as if I am preaching and I hope I am not been over the top .. I know Warrior would like to see more arts here for BSG here at CF..
I'll shut up now
Ger

Ok if you give me a little time I will see if I can find the link to the video tutorials, that should help
Here we go, and this page has links to other Blender Tutorials http://www.blendernation.com/tutorials/ - happy learning .
If I may I might do a small area of your ship to give you an idea on how it looks (with your permission naturally)
Here is an example of a Space 1999 Hawk I did in Blender, don't give up it's worth it
An extra - here is a start of a Colonial Capital Ship I am working on atm

Best I can suggest is that you do a couple of the early tutorials and post the work here. Then I should be able to explain how to use what you have achieved in building a ship like the Cheetah.
Otherwise I would just be typing instructions and that is the same as getting you to do a tutorial.
Would that help?

That is a sweet looking ship! I belong to a fan group called the CDF, that role-plays each chapter as if they have different ships. One of the discussions we've had recently is the need for an actual Battlestar Group to include ships other then Battlestars. Your ship here is one of the first ships I've seen that would realistically portray such a vessel. Very nice work.

I've just started doing BSG art, starting with the Mark II Viper. Since Blender has such a steep learning curve, and I'm am a photographer by trade (2D artist using photoshop and Illustrator), it may be a while before I have anything ready to post.
I found this site a few weeks ago, but haven't had the time to really look at it until tonight. I'll post as I get something ready to show.
