Tonight's ep was decent, nothing earth-shattering. This was the 5th episode, right? I missed the last 2 weeks so, I feel like I'm starting over a bit. ABC is repeating eps 1 and 2 this weekend. I wish they would add on 3 and 4 so that I could get back up to speed.

I'm personally amazed the show is still on. Has a large cast, interesting and compelling story that slowly reveals itself. Each episode so far seems to take time and explore a different character. It's not a reality show.

It is the first time in a while that there is a show on that I make sure I watch. Congratulations to ABC for producing the show, and I 'm glad the audience is there. Maybe the rest of America are as starved for good "scripted" series as I am.

It's also a great series to watch with my children (ages 4 and 10). However the first episode did give my 4 year old a scary dream. Even with that he is still excited for the show in Wednesdays. I wonder what it will be like when we take a plane trip.

LOL. Can you imagine David if your kid notices one of the cast members is on the same flight?

Actually if ANY of them are on the same plane with me, I may get nervous.

Default Good news for Sacto Area viewers....

On Wednesday, I was debating on whether to watch Smallville or Lost. I decided to give Lost a go even though we missed a week due to the presidential debate and last week's episode was never aired. Right when I turned on Lost, I saw a crawl message that said they were gonna broadcast the missing episode from last week this Saturday (tomorrow) and they were gonna rebroadcast this week's episode immediately afterwards.

So, I got to watch Smallville (it was just okay...) and I get to watch 2 episodes of Lost tomorrow night....!

Woo Hoo!

Best,
Bryan

Default the element of surprise

"Lost" is, in my opinion, the best adventure series ever made in the 60-plus-years history of television. It is well-written, with a great cast, the scenery is stunning, and the element of surprise is better-used than in anything I've ever watched before on the tube.
I am delighted, and shocked, that the series is doing well in the ratings. Never has an action-adventure-fantasy series (I don't want to say science fiction, because I don't know if Lost falls in that category) scored this high in the Neilsons on prime time original Big Three Network TV.
So you'd think I'd want to discuss it endlessly in chat rooms, collect stuff from it, keep a scrapbook, and want to know what happens three weeks down the road. To my amazement, I don't want any of that this time. It may be partly because I've done that/am doing that for so many other shows/movies/celebrities that it's "out of my system" and don't feel the need for it. But I think it's mainly because, again, of the element of surprise. I DON'T wanna know in advance what will happen on "Lost"! I've found that it's kind of fun jumping out of my skin for a second or two one night a week. (I'm not a horror movie fan, so it's really not something that I enjoy experiencing, and I usually avoid watching programs like that.)
The only thing about the show that I am really curious about, and have not yet found (although I've not looked at Lost websites too closely, for the above-mentioned reasons), is a complete cast list of the folks on the island, not just with the regulars each week, but the recurring ones, the ones that have died, and the ones who have had one or two lines but you see them in the background on the island. So if any of you know where to locate this, could you tell me (without directing me to a site that over-analyzes the series and gives away all its secrets)?

Default idiotic programmers

What moronic TV programmer(s) scheduled Lost, LAX and the second half of Category 6 (A TDAT-like miniseries) all at 8 p.m. next Wednesday (Nov. 17)?! I have only one TV and one VCR! Yes, I can watch one program while taping another, but that still leaves a third show to worry about!
I will have to be sure to take a blank tape to my mother's house this weekend and remember to set the timer on her VCR so that I will be able to watch everything eventually.
What's especially frustrating is that some nights there is nothing on at all to watch...

I'm going to make a quick recap of the various episodes for those who have missed one.

#1- pilot, part 1
Spoiler
A plane out of Australia goes off course and breaks apart in midair and crashes on a remote island. There are 48 survivors.

At night in the distance, there is a huge roar/moan and trees are seen being shoved to the side. Everyone is very scared.

Jack(the doc), Kate, and Charlie head in the jungle in hopes of finding the cockpit and a radio transmitter. They find the cockpit section with the pilot still alive. But suddenly something reaches in and pulls his body out through the cockpit window. They later find his body...on the top of a tree!

#2- pilot, part 2
Spoiler
The survivors find a pair of handcuffs. Instantly Sawyer(mean tempered redneck) and Sayid(a former iraqi soldier) accuse each other of being a criminal/terrorist. Unknown to everyone it was Kate who is the fugitive from justice. And the man next to her was an FBI guy taking her back to the USA. But he was heavily injured in the crash.

Kate, Sawyer, and Sayid head to high ground to try radioing for help. Shannon (spoiled rich girl) and Boone(her brother) go along. Along the way a bear attacks (A POLAR BEAR?!?) and Sawyer kills it with a gun he took from the dying FBI guy. Not trusting sawyer they take the gun away from him.

Reaching high ground they try the radio, but its jammed by another signal. Shannon deciphers the french. It is a message that was repeating for 16 years. A woman saying everyone is dead, please help.

#3- "Tabula Rasa"
Spoiler
The survivors give Kate the gun thinking she is the most trustworthy.

Flashbacks of Kate are shown. Back in Australia she is caught trespassing on an old man's farm. Instead of turning her in or running her off, he takes pity and offers her a job. But after a few months he finds out she is wanted with a huge reward posted. She figures this out while they are driving by the FBI guys in the car behind her. She tries to escape and causes a car crash. But rather than run she saves the man from the burning car and is captured.

During flashbacks aboard the plane you see the FBI guy get knocked unconcious. Oxygen masks drop from the ceiling. Kate makes sure the unconcious FBI guy gets air.

Later the FBI guy is dying on the beach from his injuries. he asks Kate to kill him. Kate gives the gun to Sawyer who shoots the FBI guy with the last bullet. But he blows it and it don't kill him. And he dies a much more painful death.

Default what it's similar to

Lost is similar in concept to JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING! It's just that the writing, acting and scenery are so well-done, and there have been so few decent new stories on TV for the past five years or so (ever since everyone started making reality TV), that it seems original.
The two most obvious comparisons, are, of course, Gilligan's Island and Survivor. But those two stories aren't the only ones.
In the course of five minutes, I came up with (I cheated, I did a little research on the dates) Castaway, Fantasy Island, Lord of the Flies (1954), Swiss Family Robinson (1814), The New People (a 1969 series which I never saw about a group of teens stranded on an abandoned military basis in the Pacific), Robinson Crusoe (1719), Gulliver's Travels (1726), Exile (a 1980s TV movie starring one of the Coreys about a group of teens stranded on a tropical isle), and the oldest one of all, The Tempest (1610). I don't remember if there was anything similar in the Odyssey, and that was written at least 2,000 years ago!
Oh, and as for the monster, that's from Jurassic Park/King Kong/Island of Dr. Moreau et al.
One last thing I've noticed: the character of Charlie is very much like the character of Larry in Stephen King's The Stand.

I actually was a big fan of Fantastic Journey! Waay back in the day. I remember liking a blond girl in a black dress with some sort of power that I forget. Did she talk to animals or turn into a cat? I also remember Varian had a cool tool thing.

I also thought of Survivor when the show began. Its really hard to make heads or tails of this series cause we don't know what's going on.

#8- "The Confidence Man"
Spoiler
Shannon (the spoiled girl) runs out of asthma medicine and can barely breathe. Jack and Sayid(the Iraqi) decide the only way left to get Sawyer(the mean redneck) to give up the medicine he is hoarding is to torture it out of him.

In flashbacks we learn that Sawyer when he was a little boy saw his mother have an affair with a con man who stole his father's money. Which drove his father to kill his cheating wife, and commit suicide. He vows to hunt the con man down.

Years later, Ironically Sawyer ends up a con man himself. He's schemes with a woman to trick her husband out of all his money. And just as he has the money in his hands... their little boy appears.

Hating himself, he leaves the house. But the damage is done and the marriage is ending. He then takes an airplane flight....

Back in the present, Sawyer is screaming from Sayid's torture. But he won't give the medicine up. Not unless Kate kisses him. She gives in. But he admits he never had the medicine to begin with.

Luckily the Korean woman helps uses a herbal medicine to help Shannon.

Sayid is filled with remorse for his actions. He packs his stuff and exiles himself from the rest of the survivors.
