Default Joint Forces "Merlin & Matador"

Hello all... I just wanted to share a bit of work I'm doing.

Some time back Merlin asked for my help in texturing his version of Galactica. I was happy to provide the help.

As from my personal experience... It is a lot of work for one person to do all... Modeling, texturing, and animating.

His strength is modeling. While my strength is texturing and animation. After some back and fourth, we decided to combine forces and work on something together.

For now I am helping texture his mighty Battlestar... Here are some of the results.

Merlin just finished modeling in the port holes for the lights. So we did some renders with that.

The two plain renders are from Merlin... The textured ones are from me. I'm still working on my other project. But was happy to help Merlin out on this.

There is still much more work that needs to be done on this. So it is a Work in Progress.

I wanted to follow up Matadors post, We all seem to have our own ideas, visions, dreams for what we want or wish Battlestar Galactica could be, for some it's a continuation , for others it's re-imaged, or for others, maybe it's something in between. We all want Battlestar Galactica to continue !!!!

For many of us, we want to share our view, our idea's, we want to share how we would do it, from different design ideas , to the look and feel, to the story and the characters ! It's a great dream, one I've personally had since the original series was canceled.

With CGI, today it's something more than we could have imagined only a few years ago, we can actually create visual interpretations of our ideas and share them with others.. we can bring our ideas to life, for all to see!!!!

One thing I've learned.... In trying to do this, is, at least for me, it's something you can't do alone. Making the huge amount of models required with the look and feel you want, designing, modeling, texturing, rendering, animating, editing, adding sound and music .. In trying to do it all, as well as knowing and understanding how to use all the different software involved, I found doing it alone, as much as I would have loved to have my personal stamp on everything .. I found it unattainable.

I learned I could only do parts, and my dream, became a cruel tease, done only in parts, never pulled together. I needed to let go and not only ask for help, but shift away from total control of the vision and create something together ..

It's what we are doing now!!! our goal is to learn how to do this, and create something, we as a team are proud of, we hope in a small way we can share our combined visions and make something others will enjoy, we want to ad our visions to the ever growing Galactica Universe ...

To do this we are thinking, of not only producing, images and fan films, but maybe a new web site, that shows our individual ideas and the personal directions with our work, as well as the combined effort !

I think it could be a web site for everyone .. a place if you choose to, you can share your work, in any form, Artwork, Writing, CGI fan films ..
I think the idea could be, a place for the creative fans to show and showcase there work and get the feedback / critique we all need !

You could even join with us, with the same approach, showcase your work as well as work in the collaborative effort ?

Some feedback on this would be appreciated ...

What Matador titled this thread, could be a the name of the site, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA ... JOINT FORCES, describes the idea very well, it's a collaborative !

I have always liked the (overall) design of the Galactica. It looks like a very thought through design. It makes sense.
This rendition has taken this ship to another level that makes even more sense.

I have to ask, is that section on the front top of the hangar bay pods a launch bay for shuttles (and other support craft)?

Yes, The thought behind this, as we know, the Galactica is old, but it's been updated over and over, kept up to date, and made more and more lethal ... So ..with the landing bay, it's also been retrofitted, since it's original build, with forward facing hangers added to the bays during a major retro fit ...

Things to notice .. the struts that are above the legs and near the back half of the hull .. were added to reinforce the ship do to added stress , from the updated engines .. The armament, all those rectangle boxes around the mid section and landing bays are missile containers .. added during a refit too ..

So the idea is a ship has been updated, and I wanted it to reflect that look..

I like what all you have done with it. It looks SPECTACULAR!
It would make for a great "physical" model as well.

I've gone back, cleaned some stuff up, plus added some more details... the thing though... I've added antennas below the landing bay ? Keep them or get rid of them ?

WOW! Very nice looking. I like the claws at the back of the landing bays. Not really sure about the antennae below the ship.

But it is really looking ferocious.

Gaaahhhh... Need to get my computers fixed, or get better ones and get back into CG modeling and animation.

Senmut, the things on the top are antennas. Martok2112, the claws are taken from the Ralph McQuarrie drawings, I love his work and needed to put something in that directly ties to him. Plus those/his drawings are so cool!

The Antennas on the bottom, I'm not sure either ???? just trying them out, I'm not sure if they will stay or not ?

Some very nice work all round.
The Battlestar has come out differently than I had thought. It got more beefy than I thought it would. Very nice!

Hi Mikala, can you expand on your thoughts here, "more beefy" ? Also, you are more than welcome to join in on our project here, Anyone else, for that matter, too, we plug away at this when we can, adding some more people would be great !

Hi there.
I have not been about for a long while so I might not be remembering this correctly. Like that newscaster
A long while ago you had started a Battlestar and it was very fragile looking.
This version or new mesh is looking less fragile and having a more substantial look to it. Less sports car and more battleship. If that makes any sense at all.
Could simply be time playing tricks with my memory.
Joining in? I don't know what I would contribute really. My modeling time has been cut back to next to nothing.
Lately all I've been able to do is putz around on the Ralph M Basestar. I think you can see the amount of work I've gotten done there....
If something specific pops up let me know and I'll see what I can do. Okay?

It's the same mesh, It just took time to evolve, it was a lot of, lets see what it looks like, like this, or that..
the one goal though, through out was to make it a more menacing looking warship .. hopefully that is coming through ..

As far as joining us, no big deal, but we are always open to people joining up, our goal isn't to push an individual idea, it more about making a few scenes, that provoke thoughts, and new ideas !

I've also included some detail shots.

Those to me are all gorgeous....

I am not a material kind of person, but have been getting some "expertise" if I dare say, using C4D and some of the preset materials in content browser. ( redoing the Vprs and Raider in Arrival)
Those would look beautiful I think in my C4d zipping around a Nice BG model that was
of the original with all the bells and whistles.

I like the look of them.

I do think I saw that shuttle somewhere else in a thread..if it is same, I think I may have said something that it could be a Cylon shuttle possibly also.

Seriously, I like'em.
