Lightbulb Beyond Our Reach

Something my daughter is studying today for school made me start to wonder. She's studying about foods and calories, what's good and what's bad. There is a picture in her book of foods that are good for you. Opposite that is a picture of foods that aren't. Strangely, the foods that are good for you look about as appetizing as cardboard, while the "bad" foods look yummy as ever. Why is that? Why, after millions of years of development, according to scientists, do we yearn for what's bad and shun what's good? Wouldn't you think our bodies would crave that which would give us longevity, rather than self-obsolescence? It's so strange. We want what we can't have. That is the human race in a nutshell.

But then it dawned on me, we do that with everything. We wanted to know what's over the next horizon; we couldn't have it so we invented the boat and the wheel. We wanted to reach the stars, and knew we couldn't, so we invented space travel, and now we're doing it anyway. And too, we've fought and fought to see the Galactica's mission go on not start over, and because it isn't, we want it all the more. We crave things that our beyond our reach. Why?

We are the human race. We want what is beyond us /because/ it is beyond us. It is that dreaming and that striving that makes us so special as a species in all this vast universe.

We do not want because we can't. We want because we will find a way.

Affectionately and respectfully,
Muffit

That was beautifully put.
