Default Re: Chronicles of Narnia - Voyage of the Dawn Treader

I enjoyed the film as well, but nearly as much as I thought I would.

They stuck to the basics of the book but added a lot and wandered away at points. It was like they hit all the major points but bird walked away as often as they could.

I'll have to see it again. My only complaints were how it related to the book. The film itself was pretty damn good. Very exciting and visually entertaining!

Default Re: Chronicles of Narnia - Voyage of the Dawn Treader

I'm one of those that got to enjoy the material presented in the film "cold". I never read any of the books, don't plan to read them, but I have enjoyed the films very much.

I was a bit hesitant about seeing it because critics were less than kind about what they thought of it. When I read one critic's complaint that "it's not as good as Harry Potter", I'm wondering what the hell that was about. HP and Narnia are completely different types of stories - it's like comparing Star Trek to Star Wars...can't be done.

I liked the film more than I expected to because of the lambasting by critics, but the fact that the theater was nearly packed on a Sunday afternoon was certainly a good sign. When I recently saw the recent HP film on opening weekend, it wasn't nearly as full.

What I really liked about this film was that it took place aboard a ship, but the screenwriters didn't turn it into a fantasy genre version of Pirates of the Caribbean". I enjoyed all of the characters and missed the couple that were absent, but I would see this film again or buy it on DVD when it comes out.

Well worth the price of admission!

That is what I had hoped for. My only complaint with the film was how it deviated form the book unnecessarily. With as many production issues came up between the studios and what not it is amazing that the film is as good as it is. Objectively speaking it was a blast to watch!

I really hope they make the next one! Seems like it is doing well enough to warrant so.

Very encouraging numbers:

http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=narnia3.htm

Spoiler

Based on worldwide receipts, they got 2/3 of the budget back, on opening weekend!!! I think this bodes well for The Silver Chair!!

If you read the reviews, Box Office Mojo was less than flattering with their remarks. I really don't care. All I want to see is all 7 books made into movies. I don't care even if it's the direct-to-DVD route, either. As long as they're made.

Why did Disney pull out? If it made buckets of dubloons, the logic should be to stick to it like chewing gum to the cat.

I agree. Who knows.

Ya know BST, I've come across a few things on Box Office Mojo recently that I totally disagree with. They're good for numbers but not much else.

Same with Ain't it Cool News. I don't know who is writing the reviews on these sites but they are horrible!

Money. The return on Prince Caspian was less than Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe and they didn't have the cajones to stay the course.

Yep. I've never really had much use for critics because, in the end, they're simply one more person with one more opinion which is no more or no less valuable than yours or mine.

Box Office Mojo is mellowing on their criticism a bit about Dawn Treader.... this link, however, is for the latest box office numbers:

Sad to say, not one more movie will be made in the book series. These movies make a ton in over seas markets, but barely scrapes by in the states.
Dawn Treader, was a decent movie, not great, but the transition from book to movie for this one was difficult. I never felt like anyone of the characters were ever in danger, but it did have a decent cohesive story line compared to the last movie. I hope, they decide that over seas markets are important too, and it doesn't matter how it makes money, just as long as it does. If this happens, maybe another one will/would be made. I know it won't, but here is to the minute possibility of. I at least hope it makes 100 million here in the states, it isn't to far off.....

I disagree.
The following are the box office details from "Prince Caspian":

$419,651,413 (Worldwide)
$278,029,923 (Non-USA)
$141,621,490 (USA)

That was culled in a time period from May 18, 2008 - September 4, 2008.
******
For "Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe":

$718,262,636 (Worldwide)
$426,552,791 (Non-USA)
$291,709,845 (USA)

That was culled in a time period from December 11, 2005 - May 7, 2006.

******

For "Dawn Treader" thus far:

$303,265,567 (Worldwide)
$213,334,774 (Non-USA)
$89,930,793 (USA)

That was culled in a time period from December 10, 2010 - present.

So, while Dawn Treader may not catch LWW, it is certainly within reach of PC whose revenue was sufficient to warrant DT.

Factoring the inflation rate into the above, the proceeds from DT are approximately $318,000,000 when measured in 2008 dollars. So, when comparing the 2 movies in the same dollars, DT is about $100 million behind PC although the time period for PC's proceeds was about 4 months whereas DT has only been on the market for slightly less than 2 months.

Those numbers aren't bad though. I think "The Silver Chair" has a good chance of getting the green light but who knows.

I saw DT, and my Son (who's read all the books) liked it as much as I did.
I'm up for another one, if TPTB decide to green light it.

If any book is in danger of being left out, I think it is "The Horse and His Boy". Great story, but it doesn't do much to move the greater story along. I hope they do all seven books though!

Doing another inflation adjustment, DT is at approximately $342 million, when compared to 2008 dollars. It's closing in on PC.

The DVD / BluRay of VDT was released on Friday, April 8.
It seems as though some places are pricing the 2-disc set (2nd disc specials) and the 1-disc set, both, at about $20-23 so, we got the 2-disc set.

Next, "The Silver Chair"!

Keep the Faith!!
