Default "Brought To You By...."

Even though the DVDs are the only way one should watch the episodes from now on, I still keep on-hand VHS copies of episodes from their original ABC broadcasts because there is an extra nostalgia factor associated with them. Not the least of which are all the commercials and ABC promos that were as much a part of the original viewing experience as anything else.

While dubbing a copy of the 9/17/78 premiere of "Saga", I decided to make a list of all of those original sponsors of Galactica that night, and it's interesting to note how many of these products are no longer around today, and some of the other things about 1978 America that are gone forever now. These products will also give a bit of insight into the kind of audience being targeted in a show like Galactica, and one finds that there are in fact a relatively even distribution of ads aimed at men, women and children.

Tickle Anti-perspirant
Clairol Condition Shampoo
Lavoris Mouthwash (This appeared twice)
Omni Magazine (This appeared twice)
Tobor Toy Robot (Panasonic)
Kellogg's Sugar Frosted Flakes (before PC dom required the dropping of the word "Sugar" from their advertising)
Johnson's Baby Oil
Playmobile "Little People"
Red Lobster Restaurants
Lee Jeans
Sealy Posturepedic Mattress
ABC Promo-"Welcome Back Kotter"
Premium Saltine Crackers
Dairy Queen Brazier Stores
Signal Mouthwash
Mrs. Butterworth's Syrup
1979 Pontiac Sunbird (This ad appeared three times in the broadcast)
ABC Promo-"Happy Days"; "Laverne And Shirley"; "Three's Company"; "Taxi"
1979 AMC Spirit
Frigidaire Washing Machine
Schick "Personal Touch" Razor
Avco Financial Services
ABC Promo-"Eight Is Enough"; "Charlie's Angels"; "Vegas"
Ken-L Ration Tender Chunks Dog Food
Mr. Coffee (Joe DiMaggio pitching this as he did for many years)
McCulloch Chainsaw
ABC Promo-"Bad News Bears" (Friday Movie)
Bubble Yum Bubble Gum
Peak Anti-Freeze
Holiday Inn
ABC Promo-"Three's Company"; "Taxi"; "Starsky And Hutch"
Honda (They plug how their cars can still take leaded gasoline!)
Hush Puppies Shoes
McDonald's (Big Mac keeps you coming back!)
ABC Promo-Sunday Edition of Monday Night Football next week
Betty Crocker Super Moist Cake Mix
Vicks Sinex Nasal Spray
ABC World News Tonight Promo
Frigidaire Appliances
Excedrin
Miss Clairol Color Hold

It's also worth noting that over the closing credits we heard a voiceover from David Hartman, the host of "Good Morning America" that went "You've just seen Battlestar Galactica. Tomorrow morning, you'll see how Battlestar Galactica was made!" That would have been an interesting feature to see!

Just a little window into the kind of world that was when our favorite sci-fi show debuted.

Thats quite an interesting little social history add-on to our favourite show!
Well done for preserving it. You should get them transfered to dvd to preserve it.
I wonder is the 'making of' program still exists? (if tis different from the DVD extras)

There's no question the Good Morning America feature story still exists in the ABC News vault, but the problem is there's no way of accessing it. I'm sure there are also a lot of other Galactica feature stories and cast interviews resting somewhere in news archives elsewhere waiting for us to rediscover some day.

About the only thing this particular recording is missing in terms of giving a full picture of what happened that memorable first night is the entire 30 minute news interruption that took place at 10:30 PM when Jimmy Carter came out to announce a peace treaty between Egypt and Israel. Just as they were about to go to this (cutting into one of the latter Carillon sequences), an ABC staff announcer assured viewers they would resume the show in its entirety once the news bulletin was over.

This copy I have is second generation VHS made in the last few years, so it'll be good for awhile longer, but when DVD recording technology improves a bit, that will be the optimum time to transfer it to that format.

There are converters now that can convert S Video or RCA cables over to a USB port. This is handy for putting ones 8mm or VHS tapes on the computer and thus, burning it off to a DVD.

If I had the original commercials, I could make a new DVD and dub them into their original places. I imagine there are lots of people here that know more about how to do this then I do where I just started messing around with Video.

Either way, I can't wait to see the commercials.

Any commercials from the Hardy boys that aired before Galactica?

Here is a site that might give us a little flash back to different times.

I don't have the Hardy Boys program from before Galactica. For me, the big bummer of this off-air recording from a Minneapolis ABC station (I obtained this in trade years ago) is that the ABC news interruption of the Camp David Accord was edited out (I think the result of the taper stopping tape at the time).

One thing about the Frosted Flakes ad is that not only is it still from the era when "sugar" was in the title still, but it's not your typical kiddie ad as it shows Tony the Tiger at poolside surrounded by several girls in bikinis as he revels in his status as a Hollywood icon (but the ad ends with a phone-call from Mrs. Tony The Tiger which gets him back down to Earth!)

As for transferring video to DVD format, get Pinnacle Studio 10, only around $70 at Best Buy. With a video card installed in your computer, all you do is hook up your VCR to your computer and voila! DVD transfers of video...

Is there anyway I could get a copy of this from you? Just curious.
