Question Space Academy and Jason of Star Command

Does anyone out there remember these shows? They were live action Saturday morning shows that aired on CBS in 1978 and 1979. The effects were slick for the era and Space Academy starred Jonathon Harris (Dr. Smith/Lucifer) himself! I would love to see these shows again. Does anyone know where I could get some tapes?

Bijou -

There were never any licensed tapes produced of either of these shows. The last time that they were broadcast was in the early days of the SciFi Channel. (Remember when Skiffy re-ran all those great shows from our younger days....?). There are a couple of sellers on eBay that sell recordings of the episodes either on VHS tape or Video CD. I purchased a copy of "Space Academy" which had 15 epsiodes on 3 tapes. The viewing quality was "so-so", but I guess that it was the only way to see them.

The sellers usually sell them for about 15-20 bucks per tape - I guess it depends on how badly you want to see them again....

Best to you,
Bryan

Thanks for the links conundrum. The model looks fantastic! I remember that Jason of Star Command was a spin off series of Space Academy. If I remember right it had a serialized format with a cliffhanger ending each week. I also remember that the villian, Drago, had henchmen that looked like red Cousin Its! The show also had ships similar but different from Space Academy. Oh well, both of those shows are now mere footnotes in Sci Fi TV history.

I remember this show. Eric Green played one of the kids. I just don't remember the Character's name.

I just remember us teasing Eric mercilessly when the action figures came out. His was sooooo cute. *L*

I think his name on the show was Loki. Did you know the actor?

Yes... He was the brother of a friend of mine, Jeff. Really a smart kid.

Jeff used to do a fan run convention in CA called PhantasmiCon. That would have been back in the 80's though. I don't think there have been any since then.

Heart

I have approx 5 episodes of Jason of Star Command on tape (off UK Sci-Fi), with James Doohan (Star Trek's Scotty) as Commander Canarvin (chief of Star Command's asteroid base). I think that Drago's Dragonship was an interesting design, looking like a kind of metal and rock goliath. But some of the writing was pretty silly (hey, the sliding door wont open and there's someone trapped inside, so lets just smash through - It's a space station, and the doors are made out of wood/styrofoam panels!).

All the best,

Just in case anyone wants to know, BCI, the people that have been releasing the "He-man and the Masters of the Universe' dvd sets, will be releasing both "Jason of Star Command"and "Space Academy" in 2007. They have the release rights to the Filmation library and will be scheduling a steady diet of great 1970s saturday morning video nirvana to a nostalgic public. I can't wait. By the way, they will be releasing "Ark II" later this year.

I read that one of the actresses from Space Academy eventually left show biz to become a registered nurse, then became an animal rights activist. Can't remember her name, though. Looking forward to the DVD's.

She also appeared on the original Star Trek episode "And the Children Shall Lead Them". She was also Felix Unger's daughter on the Odd Couple tv show.

And the kid actor, Eric Greene, grew up to write a book on the Planet Of The Apes movie and do the screen-text commentary for one of the DVD releases (he can also be seen in the Behind The Planet Of The Apes documentary).

I'm under the impression that the Seeker was used in one episode, when Jason had to go out in search of the lost robot "Peepo" (I think that was the Space Academy robots name). Anyway, when Jason found him, Peepo had been reprogrammed by Drako. Peepo was piloting a Seeker.
