New Captain Scarlet airs in the UK
I'm not sure how this happened, but I came across the first episode of the NEW Captain Scarlet series, screened yesterday (Saturday) on ITV's 'Ministry Of Mayhem' kids show.
The new CGI series, developed by Gerry Anderson (with the CGI work headed by Ron Thornton - a process being termed 'Hypermarionation' ) - sticks closely to the ideas of the original series, but has updated it for the 21st century (new vehicles, technology, and..... only one sex change!!! )

1. Who had the sex change?
2. How is the show? Does it capture the spirit of the original?

Hi Bijou, It's Lieutenant Green (Colonel White's chief of ops on the new 'Skybase') thats had the gender change.
From what I've seen of the first part of the two part pilot - it's plot is generally close to the original (not wanting to give too much away) - Spectrum goes to Mars... Uncovers alien city... destroys it due to a misunderstanding.... aliens plot revenge on Earth.... It seems to have a more 'Hollywood Blockbuster' style - presumably to appeal to other audiences as well, but it does make a good first impression. It's even kept a similar drum roll when cutting to another scene!
As far as I know, 26 episodes have been ordered for the first season, with the first 13 being ready to broadcast - the rest should be ready to begin again in the autumn.
Hope this helps,

I look forward to seeing it when it airs in the states. I like the fact that Gerry Anderson is the creative force behind the new show. I think it was a crime that he was shut out of the live action Thunderdirds movie. I guess the end result speaks for itself.

Oops!
Er, I think I might have over-sexed it a bit when I said 'Hollywood Blockbuster'.... sorry guys!
I think that the show is actually more a progression from Anderson's previous works (most recently 'Space Precinct') in style, as he's using writers & directors he has worked with in the past, so experience does count for something. As for the CGI - Ron Thornton's track record speaks for itself - Babylon 5, Starship Troopers (the series) etc. According to the official website, the CGI technique being dubbed 'Hypermarionation' uses a lot of motion capture, to get an accurate physical appearance for the characters, and their movement, so it's pretty darned good CGI, almost as good as 'Final Fantasy'.
As for repeats, I think the producers are still in talks with ITV on that subject...... and only one Angel - Destiny (aka Simone Giradoux) has appeared in the first episode..... and apparently, she has a soft spot for Captain Black..... hmmmmmm.
Also..... They got flying motorbikes!

As part of the ITV1 'Ministry of Mayhem' show (9:30 - 11:30) It should be around 10:30 - but be there a while before - as it's a live show the timings may not be precise....
But it doesn't appear to be a perfect start. According to the Fanderson website, several cuts were made to the episode already shown, so further cuts are to be expected (talks are underway for an uncut later slot.)
