Question Superscout posted this

on the Scifi board. Could this theory be true?

Date: 01/10/2003
From: Superscout

It appears to me that what Ron Moore (and Universal)
are doing to the "Galactica" property is not reimagining
for the sake of artistic expression -- but changing
characters and story elements that are owned by
someone else, an unseen "Mystery Writer" who created
all the elements that are now missing from the mini-
series. Perhaps the "Mystery Writer" was plagiarized
by Glen Larson and Donald Bellisario and won an
out of court (and unseen) settlement. Universal would
not be able to use the plagiarized elements, yet can
still use the "Battlestar Galactica" title. The CONTENT
changes, however, are copyright evasive maneuvers,
with Ron Moore coming up with excuses for the
alterations. Things like: Starbuck should be a woman
because as a male character he's a cliche', or giving
some of the characters first names. Copyright evasion.
Plagiarism and the threat of a lawsuit could be why
"Galactica" was blown off the air to begin with. Thus
giving us "Galactica 1980." Why wouldn't we know
about this? Universal doesn't want Mr. Larson,
Mr. Bellisario, and themselves embarrassed by
the defeat. The best way to do this is to LIE!

Think about it.

A fellow fan (lawyer) once ran a background check for Maren Jensen for me. There had been unsubstantiated rumors that she was serving prison time for murder charges. According to the check, Ms. Jensen never committed any crimes, nor served any time.

I suppose a check could be run for lawsuits, such as was cited by Superscout. I may ask a few legal eagles myself.

Do know, folks: Some things are seeded on purpose within bboards... both to fans to convey AND by the powers that be themselves.

Good to hear that about Maren Jensen. I hope she is living in peace happily wherever she is.

Thinking about this some more, it can't possibly be true.

Why, you may ask? Because of Richard's books that's why. Richard would be commiting plagiarism and breach of copywright by using the original concept and characters.

Just like if you quoted someone's libellous statement in print, you are repeating the libel and you'd get sued as well as the person who first said it.

Peter:
I thought about it some more today and came up with the same answer:
If Universal can license iBooks, and I've got a Larson/Thurston novel in my hands that's © 1986, one that's 1988, the various comic books that have been done the last 25 years, the toys even (figures)....all this points to Superscout's post being bogus. If Universal had rights to license all of these things: then it is their choice and only their choice to redesign the entire show and pervert the original characters.

I'm sticking with the guess that Glen owns the original characters and the revamp is to take him out of the approval loop while they produce something that lets them keep the franchise from reverting entirely to Glen. Only my guess however.

Default Copy Right Laws

Maybe the copy right laws are different between print (books) and film and Tv?
