I like several of those bands, myself. VH, w/ Roth AND w/ Hagar, Rush, Journey, Great White (although I haven't listened to them in years), and Whitesnake. Thinking about Whitesnake takes me back - wasn't their lead singer, David Coverdale, formerly of Deep Purple? That's another band I used to listen to, quite a bit, both with and without Richie Blakemore. One album of theirs that I lliked was called, "Come Taste The Band". It featured Coverdale on lead vocals and Tommy Bolin on lead guitar. I was a huge fan of Tommy Bolin. His solo work was outstanding, as well as his work with the James Gang, BANG album. Too bad he left this world on 12/04/76.

I did a little poking around the net and found a Bolin website --

http://www.tbolin.com/

If you've never listened to his music, give it a whirl. It's excellent - both solo works -- Teaser (1975) and Private Eyes (1976) are top-notch.

Okay, how about a little butchering of the classics?

Hayseed Dixie, used to be AC/Dixie until lawyers got involved.

Yes, a lot of people don't generally connect with Sting's solo works as much as they do with the Police. He was much more flamboyant and raw with the Police. I am sort of converse when it comes to Sting. I didn't really like the Police until they came out with the Synchronicity album...but when Sting went on his own, I really dug what he was doing, and also came to appreciate the Police even more.

And, BST, if you will be so kind as to provide the answer to my little trivia question?

Well, no general should be left waiting but, it looks like Lady Rowan beat me to the punch.

It was, to no one's surprise, Gordon Sumner.

Anyone heard of John Hiatt???

This one was also recorded by Delbert McClinton, a beautiful tune:

Wasn't John Hiatt a former member of The Baby's?

If it's the same guy, that I'm thinking about, he had a 80's "hit" with the song, "Missing You".

Re: Delbert McClinton, I loved the track he did, on Volunteer Jam VI, "Marie Laveau" -- what a howl!

btw, that Vol Jam album was . I liked CDB's cover of Sweet Home, Alabama!

No, I believe you are thinking of a geek named John Waite. Not to be confused with Tom.

Hiatt has written a lot of tunes that have been recorded by various country artists.
More of a songwriter's songwriter.

I think Suzie Boguss did "Drive South" which is much better in the original Klingon.

Hiatt and Thompson have written so many classic tunes that they each have a "various artists" tribute album.

Hiatt's guitar player in his backup band "The Goners" was Sonny Landreth, who is most probably the greatest slide guitar player now living. I was looking for a link to Landreth's "Outward Bound" which is a properly religious tune, and showcases his slide technique.

Also in my "file not found" list is Crucial Smith's bluegrass version of Melloncamp's "Lonely Ole Night" which works quite well in a bluegrass style.

Delbert McClinton is way cool.
I got a chance long ago to hear his first disc called "Del and Clark" but I do not recall who the frell Clark was.
He wrote "B-Movie Boxcar Blues" which appeared on The Blues Brother's Suitcase Full of Blues album I believe.

I remember from Del's first album a tune called "Old Standby" -"I'm, still getting by, still getting high, knowing I'm your old stand by." A real cry in your beer country tune.

If I remember correctly, Del had a marginal hit in the early 80s with "Giving it up for your love."

Yeah, Darth, I missed that one by a mile!!

At least, I got the first name right.

After I listened to "Slow Turning", I realized that it wasn't the same guy.
That's some good music! Did I catch a hint of banjo, in the background, on the song?

Yep, there is plenty of banjo there.
Hiatt came to Nashville from Indiana I believe in the late 70s.

This guy is a personal friend:
http://home.usit.net/~sandyc/ds.html
he played with Cyndi Lauper among others more suited to the style.
He tells me that Lauper wrote "Time After Time" on a dulcimer.

Darth,

Did you ever listen to Little Feat? You mentioned, earlier, about liking "drum, bass, sax" - well this band had it all!! I used to listen to them all the time, late 70's, early 80's. Their lead singer, Lowell George, unfortunately, passed on in 1981, due to a heart attack. (Probably brought on by something else.)

Nonetheless, they were a damn good band.

Another one of my favorites is Sonia Dada, which is the name of the band, not the name of a person.
This was what happens when a five piece white suburban rock group recruits three black tunnel singers in Chicago. That is the story I remember of how they formed.

This live cut came up first, and is a fair representation of their style:
http://ramhurl.real.com/smildemohurl...achary_full.rm

This one was their biggest "hit" on the adult alternative charts back in the early 90s.
I heard it hit number one in Australia.
"you don't treat me no good"
http://mfile.akamai.com/2851/rm/razn...oniadada_02.rm

And my favorite from their first disc, though this is a kickin' live version;
"You ain't thining about me"
http://mfile.akamai.com/2851/rm/razn...ove_Live_06.rm

"Well there's good times and bad times, and something in between. And for a while you were the best thing that I'd ever seen."

"I wish I had a headache, I wish I had the flu, or somebody or something else to do.
'Cause the last thing I want is to be thinking about you, when you ain't thinking about me."

This band is a must see live! Sounds like the last cut was from when they added a four piece horn section. Very intense live show! Must see them if you get the chance.

How about "The Band" ?

Feat covered this one on a recent album. Here it is in the original Klingon.

Occasionally, I run into someone that has never heard Neil Young's "Let's Roll," a tribute to the brave souls on Flight 93 11SEP01.

I can't find any free Van Morrison, but that is one of my all time favorites.

Damn, that was NICE!! It felt like falling in love with their music all over again! Thanks, Darth.

I'll admit to not keeping up with them for much of the 90's and when I first heard Shaun Murphy's voice, it sounded (to me) like Dale Krantz (Rossington) who did vocals for the Rossington-Collins band in the early 80's.

Me thinks a trip to the music store is in my future!

Ya know, I wish an online copy of Dixie Chicken or Mercenary Territory was available.

Play with this for a while:

http://www.singingfish.com/

Just set it so it returns items longer that 3 minites, and it should eliminate those frustrating "sample clips."

All this stuff is supposed to be legally available.
