When chopping an onion, if your eyes start to water, it is not a good idea to wipe the tears away with the hand that was holding the onion.

If your eyes start to burn from peeling an onion, turn on the cold water, high. Bend over, putting your face close to the running water. They will stop burning.

No kidding.

Oh, and to remove the smell of onion from your hands, try chopping garlic.
