Microsoft to Cut Xbox Price
Mar 29, 12:58 PM (ET)
REDMOND, Wash. (AP) - Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) said Monday it would cut the price of its Xbox video game console in the United States by $30 to about $150.
Microsoft also said it would drop the price of Xbox in Canada and Mexico, and announced discounts on several games and on a tool called Xbox Music Mixer that has karaoke features and other music technologies. The reductions are effective Tuesday.
Microsoft said it wants to draw a wider variety of potential buyers, beyond just avid gamers, to its product. The company, which is better known for its business software and operating systems, is competing fiercely with Sony's PlayStation2 and Nintendo Co.'s GameCube.
The Xbox was originally priced at $299 in the United States.
In afternoon trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market, Microsoft shares were up 26 cents at $25.29.
