Re: Picturing a future Battlestar Galactica
Although I respect Eric very much, I can't say I see much in these suggestions that I like.
I do wonder where they got the CG renderings for the DeSanto viper.

Re: Picturing a future Battlestar Galactica
Interesting. These seem that they are inspired by and based on a semi-Star Wars and Alien influenced aesthetic, are absolute engineering nonsense, and possibly a 3d aspect render nightmare, but each concept is bold, aggressive, and quite eye catching. It is good art work and good concept art. Will it fit the Galactica vision?
Opinion
Viper, yes.
Centurion, probably, though he looks clunky.
Daggit: yes. I like a large "dog" interpretation.
Raider, no. That is a 100% engineer and aesthetic fail.
Alligator: possible. I think the proportions will make the render difficult, but its interesting, which is the name of the game in visuals when you try to create a show or film "look".
All in all, I agree with Two Brained Cylon. Its very good work, I just don't know if it looks right for a 'Galactica'.

Re: Picturing a future Battlestar Galactica
I really like the designs, they just don't scream Battlestar to me. Mainly the Viper and Battlestar designs specifically. I could accept those Centurions, but I'd rather see something a bit more DeSanto-ish.

It's like redesigning a Star Destroyer. you just don't do it.

Re: Picturing a future Battlestar Galactica
It was interesting to look at those designs.
i appreciate art, and though the designs look impressive, there ar things to consider.
The Battlestar isn't resonating with a feeling that you're looking at one.
The vipers are over sleeked. The original design just works.
The cylons? Are they working out now? Jeez, are they going to give them a six pack as well? For sagan's sake they are a piece of metal to function as centurians. Doesn't matter if they look like they have more muscle, if you shoot them with your blaster, they're still going to fall hard and clunky.....
Leave them more closer to what we remember. A few tweeks here and there are fine, but not to the degree we see here.
Raiders...hmmm....where?
And what's with the giant daggit? What in all the worlds does that prove???
I don't get it.
That's my honest thoughts.

Re: Picturing a future Battlestar Galactica
I've given these a few days to sink in and think Eric totally missed the mark here. These concepts look like they belong in a Star Trek film. They don't scream (or even suggest) Galactica. The closest is the centurion but its still too far away for my tastes.
One of the appeals of the original series designs is that everything looked functional. These look like they are supposed to be a "cool CG design". The DeSanto viper and raider were far better IMO. Without too much modesty ...
Although, Darrel's design really animates well (even looking back quite a few years):

Re: Picturing a future Battlestar Galactica
Any changes to the Galactica should look like upgrades as opposed to redesigns. They should also be subtle. The "Jettison all ties" bit does not apply here so I think we're all hoping that we end up with something that is a bit more recognizable.

Re: Picturing a future Battlestar Galactica
I think any change to Galactica be internally than externally just like what the 2001 concept art showed us, the Galactica and Vipers shown to us on cinemaspy.com were just too sleek.

I also think that they should keep close to the original design.
The giant daggit was a bit much.

Re: Picturing a future Battlestar Galactica
The Raider -- uber-cheese.
Their Galactica[sic] just screamed Catfish to me.
The Viper: Ummmmm....wha? Stick with the Warrior design.
The Centurion: I'm good with that -- at least it's not a refugee from "The Black Hole".
