If you know about the Gambier Bay, and October 25, 1944, then you know why I have a deep abiding hatred of that ship. She's fine where she REALLY is. May the Yamato, and all who sailed in her when we got her, rot on the ocean floor where she lays.

I don't think this is the same production, but it's cool anyway.

The music is very 'Barry Gray'.

That was two months ago. But no, I haven't changed my mind about evil whether in flesh or in steel or when and where it manifested/manifests itself.

I won't let some sci-fi fantasy nonsense try to change the actual truth.

Damocles -

It's always gotta be about you, eh?

There's two sides to every story and where the Yamato is concerned and where it places itself in history from the viewpoint of the Japanese, it's quite a different take. Understandably so, after doing a bit of reading of the subject on my own from both perspectives. If nothing else, it was interesting reading.

But, the war with Japan is long over and I wasn't even born when the Yamato was sunk, so I have little personal investment in it's history, other than what I can glean from text and historical recountings. I for one, have enjoyed the fictional futuristic tales of the Yamato and their crew and I'm looking forward to seeing this film if given the chance.

Interesting you bring up the Gambier Bay, I actually knew someone who was aboard that ship. He is actually a person who got me heavily hooked on Japanese warship designs.

Personally I never got into Space Battleship Yamato (or Starblazers).

Don't think its about me at all. Its about the Yamato and the people who lie about it.

I don't want the Japanese to create some heroic lie about it.

The truth is that the naval coward, Kurita, in that big 'tough ship" turned tail and ran from the Hoel and the Johnson, two badly shot up American destroyers. that put themselves between it, and the carriers they were supposed to protect. That truth is what I want people to remember when they remember Yamato.

Do you understand that?

I know all that, and much more of the Yamato (and her sister ship, Musasha and Shinano), but the ship itself, wasn't a coward, the leader was. The Hoel and Johnson were lucky that the Japanese were using AP rounds against the destroyers, which allowed them to survive longer.

I'm not quite sure what the lie is that you are refering to.

The ship is the men who man her. You know this or at least I hope you do.

Do you know of the USS Chicago and Savo Island?

I'll tell you what I understand, Damocles - that you need to reorient your brain before you spout off "coward" about a man whose actions spared more American lives than you really want to think about.

Kurita was a better man than Halsey, as well as a better officer, and I would recommend stepping back and taking a good, hard look at the war in general, and Kurita in particular, before you go bashing a man who went against his culture to stop fighting a useless, futile battle that would have done nothing but kill more men - on both sides - pointlessly.

Tactically, Kurita had been under continuous submarine and air attack for days, and had already had to transfer his flag when Atago was torpedoed in the Palawan, then watched Musashi sunk and Yamato damaged in the Sibuyan, en route to Leyte. He already knew that the plan was a pointless wreck, that Ozawa's carriers were going to be destroyed as decoys, and likely understood that Nishimura was probably going to meet a bad end....and all of it after the US had put its troops ashore, leaving his forces nothing but empty transports as target practice.

Your "coward", Damocles, took a good look around, and asked the question too few so-called "officers" ever bother with: What's the point? When he decided that there was no point, he disengaged, rallied his survivors, and went home....which says a hell of a lot about him, compared to some other officers I can think of.

Your "coward" saved a felgercarb-load of American and Filipino lives...as well as Japanese ones.

Go ahead and hate the poison that infected - and to a certain extent, still infects - Japan, for all the same reasons to hate its partner in Germany.

As for the rest?

Grow up.

I was so with you until you went here man. Deciding to save his ship and his men in no way equals saving American and Filipino lives outside the fact that he decided not to pursue killing them.

It was not some grand act of mercy. It was a tactical decision for better or worse, all cowardice aside.

In the end, the Yamato did not live up to the hype bestowed on it at all and any "heroic" nostalgia projected on it was never earned.

That said, I have no problem going to see this movie (and I will!!!). As a nation, we've been guilty of looking at a few of our nations heroes through rose colored goggles. I know plenty of people who view Pappy Boyington as his character from "Baa Baa Black Sheep" but the truth is somewhat different. Oh well. Those who care enough will find out on their own.

Any "truth" attached to "Space Battleship Yamato" goes straight out the window once it launches into space. After that the arguing about that ships "truth" like blaming the Starship Enterprise for something done for better or worse by the USS Enterprise.

Okay folks...

I think that we've explored a healthy divergence of topic here, but I'm going to make a rather directed request to get it back on topic. Talk about the space-going Yamato, the film potential, the animated series, the english dubbed version (Star Blazers), or anything closely related.

If we're really going to have a serious discussion of the non-fictional Yamato's place in history, I can split off all the relevant posts into an off topic thread.

Thanks for your cooperation....

Sure, it does, even if that wasn't his specific motivation for his action - he certainly saved his own men and preserved his command...and that action saved others who were there, simply because he left.

The fact that it was unintentional doesn't diminish it.

@Gemini1999: I'm cool - I just hate cheap shots at dead people who have no other defenders, yet deserve them.

On the movie, I personally love the idea, cheese-riddled though it may be from Square One -- Star Blazers was the end Japanimation show I ever saw, after Speed Racer......

War Machine I would love to discuss this with you further as I disagree completely, but as Gemini stated...the discussion in this thread relating to the historical ship is over. I'm going to venture a guess that it is probably a good idea to let it go.

As far as the film is concerned, I think it looks fantastic.

For a live action, not too bad, to bad it will be in Japanese. I need to learn that language.

No kidding! I've always wanted to watch Gundam wing in Japanese. On a related note, I remember back at Galacticon '03 Tom DeSanto said something about the only change he had planned for the Galactica was adding some "Starblazers" style cannons. Food for the imagination!

I'll watch it whether it's in English or not - I'd settle for English subtitles at least. Dubbing doesn't work as well in live action as it does in anime.
