My "Letter from a fan" to all.
Letter from a fan of the original Battlestar Galactica
Twenty five years ago… September 17th, 1978… the moment that marked the birth of an epic space drama which was to forever influence the way science fiction for television was viewed. It would show people that science fiction programming could be not only about the future, but about out roots. It would bring an essential element of humanity, courage, and vision to the genre, one whose effects have not faded to this day.
Our mission as fans, I believe, is to make an unequivocal statement to the world- that the creative spark which fueled the hearts of so many has not only not faded, but grown stronger over time. We must let everyone know that while it may be good to capture the mind with dazzling effects, lights, and action, it is far better to capture the heart. When you hold up a mirror to life- one which shows us not only reality in all it's glorious imperfection, but what lies underneath- then you capture the true human spirit, which is capable of transforming any defeat, any loss, and capable of achieving any hope through unity and faith in ourselves and each other- faith in mankind.
However, in the world of networks and syndication, this has not been the case. We the fans are supposedly listened to, only to find that nothing was heard. We are given promises, only to have them ignored and forgotten. We find ourselves trivialized, disrespected, and ignored by the very people who wish to gain our support for their version of the vision that stirred us in the first place- a hollow shell which cannot capture the heart, and which ignores the principles and values which gave the original its incredible power of influence and persistence in the minds of millions.
This is the statement I, as a fan, want to make to these people- but to do so, we need voices. We need your voice. We need to show them how many of us believe this. We need to all come together to show the ones who see little value in these principles how their goals can be achieved by listening to the people who have kept the flame alive. Over the next months, we will be promoting a worldwide grassroots initiative to spread the word- that the time has come. We will be doing mailings and promotions, generating publicity and interest, and finally all coming together to make an unequivocal statement to those who have not listened that we will not accept less than we have come to expect, nor respect less than we have come to value.
October 24, 2003…. the moment that will mark the birth of a new voice of influence for the way science fiction is made. Help us make this celebration of the 25th anniversary of Battlestar Galactica a moment which we will always remember…. a moment in which our message cannot be ignored.
On September 17th, 1978, Battlestar Galactica was born. On October 24, 2003, she will have her last and best chance to live again in a manner of which we can be proud. Won't you join us?
