Battlestar fanfilm and fanedit uncut
Hi all...
Most people here may have seen these already, but I found I am now able to upload to youtube without a time limitation! How nice is that? So I decided to upload a couple of the things I've done before, but had to be broken down to 9 minute segments.
First is the animated fanfilm "Battlestar Galactica: The Adama Journals" which follow the early days of Adama and Tigh as warriors. These are based on the characters from the original series. The video runs around 17 minutes and can be found at the following link.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zb3wR4pizTY
The second project was a fan edit creating a cross-over episode between the original Battlestar Galactica and Space: 1999. Was a bit of an experiement that turned out a bit better (story wise) than I thought. There are a few stretches in the story as it is tough to pull two separate stories together into one cohesive story. This runs around 43 minutes (like a real episode!) and can be found at the following link.

I hope you enjoy these, for the first time or again.
Dave

Wow... I love it! I can't believe the amount of work put into this, OMG. Takes me months just to do 30 seconds of CGI!

Re: Battlestar fanfilm and fanedit uncut
Both fantastic pieces of work. The crossover in particular is something else, right from the start with the BSG theme giving way to the Space 1999 theme.

Really glad you all are liking it.
Noticed now I put this in Work In Progress, when I meant to it to be in the finished artwork postings... but ah well... what can you do?
The cross-over was really fun to do and from picturing it laid out in my head to actually editing it together, it worked out better than I thought it would. Plus it took two of my favorite shows from my childhood and brought them together so that was just too much fun to play with.

Ah, fear not, this kindly-not-so-old admin moved it for ya!!
Watched the Adama Journals, felt like back in '78 for .... 17 minutes.
Fabulous work, David!!

Re: Battlestar fanfilm and fanedit uncut
Seriously! I got frackin' chills watching it!
It made the flashback stuff in "Razor" look like utter felgercarb!
Not just that the animation was awesome, the FX, the music cues, the sound effects, the editing, even the flawless Tigh voice- all totally on the money! And above all else, it was just plain well written!

Re: Battlestar fanfilm and fanedit uncut
Absolutely unequivocally FAN-Tastic.
The Lighting was EXcellent!
the VFX, Superb!
The ANimations Awesome!
Characters,Models,Editing,MotionGfx, that's just the first 3 minutes of Adama Journals!!!!
Sounds, editing, oh man it goes on and on.
I cannot fathom the time to do this let alone rendering it. That is focus and dedication and discipline.
tbh I dint even pay attn to the story mostly- googling on the scenes :-)
Some of the scenes had me drooling to be able to do.
Reaffirms my long held belief that a BSG Game TOS with graphics like this would be Great!
I vote you as a Lord of Kobol.
Felt it when all those vipers came to the rescue!
Mission Accomplished! WOot woOT WOOT
now I can watch the 2nd -
If you would not mind, would like to know all apps you used in making this.
Was big Fan of Space 1999 also, am surprised it has not been redone or put on film
unbeknownst to many the Moon is slipping away and will eventually leave Earths Orbit.

I second that!
It makes the Clone Wars stuff seem kinda weak by comparison IMO. I'd rather have 17 minutes of perfection than hours of same ole same ole.

Hey there Queenhunter... I have an idea in mind for the second but don't know when I'll find the time to get around to it. If I do I want to go more 3d with the characters. For the first one I tried a combination of 2d rendered characters with a program called "Face Talk" for the facial animation. Its a great little (and cheap) program, but still left them too still. Would want to step that up a level for a next one.
Other programs I used for the project was Cinema 4d for the 3d work, and After Effects for the compositing and other fx animation. The main thing that helped me get it done was approaching it a bit like the did the effects in the original show. Instead of setting up, lighting and animating each scene in its own complete animation, I instead rendered the various ships in a number of separate passes with a matte channel. This way I could take the ships and mix them around in different ways to make different shots. And as I would go I would render some new passes as I had the time which just added to the shot library. Then all the lasers, turbos, explosions, etc were added in After Effects where I can just layer them all in together. I've also realized I cannot sit and tweak a shot to perfection otherwise I would never get done.
As for Space 1999, I am doing some stuff with some people on a project called Space: 2099, which is an approach of remastering similar to what was done with the original Star Trek series. Check out http://space2099.org/ if you want to see a bit on there. Was also a big fan of Space 1999 growing up so its been a lot of fun to do some stuff around that show as well!
Maybe someday I'll get around to that second episode, but please no one holding their breath. Don't want anyone falling over and getting hurt.
Dave

Nicely done David!
I've been a fan of your work since your early bsg renderings a decade ago.
I also want to thank you very much for generously sharing your 3d mesh content as well.
