Default If your computer is broke, BACK UP!

Just a fun little comic!

http://jokes.glowport.com/cartoon/backup.gif

But I can relate.

People call me a guru. But the other night when the storms took out my internet connection I embarrassed myself. After waiting all day and late in the night, I finally called tech support to complain. I told them which lights on the modem were functioning and they asked

Did you press the ON button?

I did...and I was back online!

In my younger days, yes I did very similar things, I'm ashamed to admit.

But, several dismantled computers later (None of them mine, thankfully), I'm much wiser.

Still, damn Windows for making me its bitch!

Battlestar Galactica 2004

I'm going to use this thread to vent about my recent computer problems.

About a year ago, I decided to get myself a computer, since my old one was just one step up from a typewriter.

I went for a Gateway 710XL, with two 250GB hard drives, 1024MB 400MHz DDR SDRAM, surround sound, and all the other bells and wistels.

Well I' hadn't even had it for a year, and one of the hard drives failed. It is set up as a Raid 0 system so when one drive failed, they both failed.

Thankfully, I had almost everything backed up. There were several things I had just done, that are gone, but for the most part, no big loss.

It is still under warranty, so Gateway ordered two new drives, and several weeks went by, and they were finally sent to someone who came out to my place last Wednesday, and installed them.

I was so excited! Finally after about a month, I was going to have my computer back.

Well, I went to set up my Raid 0 system. Gateway had told me I would have to call them to set it up. So I did. But, the guy I got didn't even know what that was. I told him I had an instruction sheet as to how to do that, so he told me I should go ahead and do it myself.

Well, I did it. And if I'm not mistaken I have the Raid system set up, but for some reason I can't get Windows XP loaded onto my computer.

For over a week now, I have called Gateway support, talked to several Tech guys, sent e-mails, and I still can't get windows to load onto my system.

Every time I go through the 30+ minutes of copying files, and loading Windows, it goes through the process as if it is working fine, then the computer restarts on it's own, and gives me the same warning every time. "We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this. blah blah blah."

Short of having someone who knows what they are doing, come out to show me how simple it is to fix, I don't know what else to do.

I don't really know much about raids on a pc. I had one and loved it on a mac.

Maybe you can partition your drive so the OS is on a non-raid partition. I think that is a sucky solution. There should be a way to have the boot partition as a raid. But I don't know how.

btw...maybe you can just use your drives normall without making a raid array and get a firewire drive. Firewire is remarkably fast. That's what I do.

I had a Gateway.
Their payment plans suck.
Their customer service sucks.
Their computers suck.
I have a Dell.
I am happy.

I love my Gateway, I just wish it was back up and running!

The computer I had before my Gateway, was one a friend built for me. It was good for 10 years ago.

I've got you all beat!!!!!!!!!

No way am I trading in my reliable Timex Sinclair ZX81 for any of this Intell poo poo!

FAQs about my incredible computer

Who needs a gazillion bytes of RAM, humongous data storage, and blazing speeds anyway?? Give me a Sinclair with it's whopping 1K of memory and I'm all set!!! So WHAT if it doesn't have graphics or sound? Who the heck needs it?? I don't mind re-entering my programs every time I turn it off (cuz it doesn't have ANY kind of persistent storage) -- heck, how long could it TAKE to type in 1k???????????????????

Modern electronics -- hah!!! I'm saving up to buy the 4k memory expansion unit next Christmas -- then I'll show ya!!!

Excalibur,

There is an "ALL CAP" filter built into the Forum coding. If you choose a smilie that consists of all CAPS, you need to also include an alpha/numeric character or the capital letter(s) are reduced to lower case. The smilies are "case-sensitive" so the lower case letters don't translate and the smilie does not appear.

(The additional words/characters, in the form of your question was enough to satisfy that requirement and I was able to correct the posting for you. )

I'll give an example on the next 2 posts.

With the first one I'll just type in : LOL : (eliminate the space) ;

With the second one, I'll include 'a' and : LOL : (eliminate the space)
