The planet surface is a flat plane in Lightwave with the image of the moon surface is projected onto it via the surface editor. I find that to make it work you have try and match the height of the virtual camera to the real camera's position so that the perspective works for the final rendered image. The moon is relatively easy to match lighting as the source lighting (The Sun) usually fairly harsh and from one angle with quite hard shadows. I use one light, usually a spotlight and radiosity for fill. You have to play around with diffusion settings of the plane surface and play with lighting levels but you can get quite effective results very quickly. One of the things I've found to help with the lighting is to use large Reflectors with the image or similar image to the final image applied as a texture and it gives natural fill to the model in the frame. Hope this helps.
