Did Commander Caine have an ego? He sure did, but Adama knew what Caine was doing was militarily needed. The quote I am referring to went something like:

Caine to Adama: "Don't make my LAST battle an act of mutiny. Give me your blessing."

That is not the words of a man who anticipated survival.
