Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman didn't happen until 1993. As Bryan said, Serina was suppose die at the end of the pilot. Those scenes are included in the deleted scene section in the DVD box set. Also, if you have the original soundtrack, there is track called "Boxey's Problem/Serina's Illness."
