I have seen an effect in jet exhaust called "dancing diamonds" where the
exhaust stream has bright spots evenly spaced along the stream that look like
diamonds. See the link:

I was told this is the sign of a correctly working jet or rocket engine so I would
think adding this effect would be more realistic.
