I do not see leaving Terra as stupid. Adama believes, wrongly, that as the 13th Colony, Earth is probably on a par with the other 12, technologically. Even Dr. Zee hints at this in GAL80. When they discover Terra, it is obvious that they are not on par with the Colonials, certainly not with the Cylons. The Cylons could easily crush Terra into oblivion, and so leaving, as in diverting away, hopefully will hide their existence from the Cylons, at least for a while.
