Your thoughts are good and you will find many agree with you. Some of us (myself included) are downright heart-rent hoping for a continuation that faithfully continues the heart and soul of BSG. You will probably hear many times how similar this situation is to Star Trek TOS. I cannot imagine a world without Star Trek IV.
