What do you think the new uniforms will look like?

With all this buzz going about Bryan Singer's new Battlestar film, I can't help but wonder what the new uniforms will look like. How about the Cylons? Are we going to see some of the 2001 project creep its way in?

I hope so!

As to the excellent Vincent Guastini "Mecha/Warhammer" looking Cylon designs.

I hope so dude! Those and the neat Guy Dyas' Cylon designs as well.

Re: What do you think the new uniforms will look like?

I hope the warrior uniforms get a similar treatment or they stick with the original design, it was classic.

I liked a lot of the interior updating that Dyas' sketches included. edit: the sketches I'm thinking of were in another thread that Peter posted, by another artist.

I'd want exterior ships to be original with things like the celestial dome and turret placements visible and in logical places.'

Helmets should be of the G80 Daggit Squadron design :)

I hope not. Do you remember the large marker sketches that Tom had at Galacticon? Tan shirt and pants like the original though I'm not sure if it was 1 or 2 piece, tall boots, flight jacket was simplified: more of a blunt short jacket all around without the gathers at the waist; still had a shoulder patch area and upright collar. The pants had detailing on the inside of the knees with some extra vertical seaming located about the same place as riding breeches have suede knee patches. He also had a sketch of Herb in same shirt and pants but with the original flight jacket.

I loved that updated uniform.

I do like the Daggit Squad. helmets. :D

I was never a Huge fan of the Daggit Squadron helmets. They aren't terrible, but I think you loose some of the mythological references with them.

If they do go with them, I'm still happy.

As for the total uniform, I want the originals. Pants, Shirt, Jacket. Large LASER pistol on the hip. NO BULLETS!!!!!!!

OHGs YEAH!

I would also like to see an updated version of the original cylon centurian and Lucifers...

I don't see where you lose anything with the Daggit helmets other than a better looking fit. Not as bulky.

Re: What do you think the new uniforms will look like?

If you look at the concept art that Jim posted, it doesn't look all that far off from the Daggist Squad design except the sides. They flair out a bit more to sort of mimic the head dress motif a bit more. I'm wondering if they'll throw a shield over the face.

I definitely like the original helmets a bit more, but practically speaking the Daggist Squad helm is a bit more effective.

I'm definitely cool with a flight suit that is separate from the standard uniform. I think it looks cool!

Let me ask you this Jewels?

You and several others at Galacticon 03, saw DeSanto late as he showed around his 'Art/Photo' portfolio of 2001 BSG things. So how different were the designs you saw with folks, compared to the picture Dilbertman's put up here etc?

Also if the production back in 2001 was a mere 2 weeks (fortnight) aways from filming footage. A.K.A. when Dirk Benedict was packing bags ready to leave and start shooting new BG footage in the then-new production, one kinda figured he might have been asked to arrive and go try out for a; "costume fitting(s)" etc.

I find it hard to believe that with only 2 weeks to go, that the majority of costumes needed for actual shooting on the new greenlit production weren't finished yet, surely some were and had pictures taken and stored on DeSanto BSG Portfoilo. Same questions go towards the 'DeSanto' Vipers that Bonnie scrapped after few months of storage!

We've seen the photos of their construction that were taken, about the completed ones, if the shooting schedule was within 2 weeks time in late November/early December 2001?! Before Bonnie once again waved her hand of death on everything Singer/DeSanto did.

Far as the G80 Daggit Squadron helmets go.

I like them, they aren't as classic as the BSG ones, but they look firmer and fit better its true. One day David Kerin's, gotta use some G80 footage and give us a BG fan edit movie where they were used sometime after 'HOG' along with the Two-Seater Viper.

They look decent enough additions to be in the classic series too.

As for the flying cycles though? Hmmm, long as they hover or something just off the ground, but not fly off high above in the air then, quite possibly?

Re: What do you think the new uniforms will look like?

Maybe I'm just stuck on the original more then anything that came from G1980. If they do go withthe Daggit Helmets, I definately won't be too dissapointed. It's a decent design. What I think gets me is how close it looks to real motorcycle helmets. Takes a little of the SciFi out of it for me. But that's just me.

Overall, if they stay true to the Original, I'll deal with the changes they make. And probably not have to work to hard at dealing with it :)

KJ August 19th, 2009 06:18 PM

Re: What do you think the new uniforms will look like?

Wasn't the Daggit Helmets also in silver/grey and not just brown and gold.

Different coloured helmets, hmmm wonder if the new movie would have differences of colours between the Viper squadrons? To early to speak of, but when they get to the 'planned' concept stages, certainly would be interesting to see if they go there or not.

Yo Dilbertman, you going to put up an image of the 2001 Singer/DeSanto Viper helmet? You know the 'clay one' that was on a table.

Would be nice if we had several comparisons of the helmet designs over the years, so we could all get very imaginative over this discussion.

Re: What do you think the new uniforms will look like?

Thats the grey one.

Most of the squadron wore on those ones, Troy and Dillion had the gold ones though.

Now that i think about it, don't the Daggit Squadron helmets look alot like the ones from the Battlestar Galactica video game? Did 'Warthog' get inspired by G80.

Hmmm?

But where's the one in clay that was a design for the earlier Singer/DeSanto BSG.

That one too bore a similar look to the daggit sqaudron helmets as well.

Ya know, I like the Daggist squad helm...but I really hope they go with something a little more original series looking.

Truth be told they'll probably go with something completely new. I just hope it captures the feel of Galactica!

I think this is what you were looking for! I apologize, other than the fact that it is from Global I have no credit to give with this photo. I most certainly did not take it. If you did let me know!

Re: What do you think the new uniforms will look like?

THAT'S THE ONE!

Looks like the original but its got a much tighter fitting look to it all, thus kinda also like the "Daggit Squadron" helmets! Also reminds me of the video game Viper pilot helmets.

Nice find, thinks its on my old computer somewhere's, thats why i asked Dilbertman if he could find and put it up for us.

Sweet dude, thanks.

Now we can debate what kind of designs might be useful in the new film. Although without any new info on what its going to be just yet, its hard to be realistic and straight forward with any decent theories etc.

Re: What do you think the new uniforms will look like?

I'd imagine Bryan Singer asking Guy Dyas (or another production designer/conceptual artist), "It's 2009. How can we improve upon the former designs?"

Translated: New production budget, new $$ to spend. Show me what else is possible.

Keep in mind that Tom had designs from his school days. I love the fact that childhood fan concepts (which can be the most fertile sometimes) might have made it into the design work. I would have loved to have seen some of his ships in the former production.

What can I say? I'm feeling nostalgic for what might have been. Now I have to swallow the bitter pill and deal with another reimagining, although hopefully closer to BSG TOS than GINO.

One thing that keeps bugging me: The lack of connectivity between the helmets and the uniform. I really wish there was some sort of spacesuit. Some form of microweave (non-bulky) mesh or something lightweight which the Colonial Warrior could wear during flight -- then easily removal once aboard ship or planetside (to reveal the Warrior uniform). I mean, c'mon! This is advanced tech/mech! Surely something was possible. (Then again, we all know scriptwriters and producers didn't have time or budget to factor more costume changes in each adventure...) :duck:

Just found a well-rounded, straightforward article...

http://www.cinemaspy.com/article.php?id=3019

The author provides some level-headed questions worth considering. Then again, I think a continuation doesn't need to be heavily downplayed. After all, would you want the next "Star Wars" film to NOT be a continuation from the established universe of Episode VI? (Meaning: A complete re-do, or a loosely-based homage to what was?)

Re: What do you think the new uniforms will look like?

I know what you mean about the flight suit. I love the Battle suit but in this new movie I think it would be a good move to come up with a flight suit coverall of some sort.

The uniform iself could become a one piece flight suit instead of two. Belted in the middle with the boots it wouldn't look all that different. The jacket could still be worn as well. There would have to be some sort of neck seal though.

Re: What do you think the new uniforms will look like?

I thought that the pilots wore a black one piece UNDER the regular tan outfit to deal with the stresses of G-force when making sharp turns in space?

Personally, I think that a flight suit to deal with REAAAAALLLLYY long patrols would be a good idea, but as to what color, maybe hunter green.

The regular uniform would be underneath, and the G-force underwear would be right next to the skin to insulate against the cold of space, as well as deal with any bodily functions that arise. '

(I should think that it's danged inconvenient to have to take a whiz while on patrol, so there's GOT to be some way of dealing with one's bladder out there.

A closer fitting helmet would be good; the old ones were nice, but a bit too bulky for comfort and tended to shift around a lot.

Just my two cent's.

Re: What do you think the new uniforms will look like?

The "G suit" was tan/brownish with black bits in it. Starbuck is so manly that he doesn't need one though...as is evident in Saga! lol

Re: What do you think the new uniforms will look like?

KJ,
The uniform sketches I remember were trimmer than the originals, more fitted pants like equestrian riding britches, with some sort of linear vertical pattern in the inside of the knee (same position as the suede knee patches are in riding britches). Since the WWII pilots uniforms, that TOS BSG's uniforms were based on, hearken back to WWI calvary and pilot uniforms, I thought it was an interesting detail. If I remember right, we saw 2 sketches: one of Boomer in an original jacket and one with a generic next-gen pilot where the jacket was more streamlined—no gathering in the back at the waistband. It retained the tan and brown shades of the originals. I suspect it could have been an off flight-line/on base ship uniform with a true flight suit for battle. Boots were still knee height like motocross or equestrian boots. BTW: In TOS the female pilots boots are English style equestrian field boots. I suspect they went to these because they were easier for the women to walk in. Maren Jensen had a lot of trouble walking in 40 lb. sidi boots as she only weighed 110 or so.

Re: What do you think the new uniforms will look like?

Hopefully close to the original. A one piece uniform for patrolling in space is a good idea. Not a spacesuit, but, more like a one piece jumpsuit in tan/black colour with the logo of the Galactica on the suit and rank insignia pins.

Captain Chirri September 18th, 2009 02:05 PM

Re: What do you think the new uniforms will look like?

Good thing you mentioned that the female pilots wore different boots. I've been wondering how I could afford a pair of Sidi boots for my costume.

Getting a good pair of equestrians should be a bit more affordable.

Reaper September 18th, 2009 04:27 PM

Re: What do you think the new uniforms will look like?

Yes, the Females and some of the background (extras) male Warriors all wore Equestrian or Jack boots. (think of Nazi Officer boots) They were the same Dark Borwn color that the Sidi's were painted to. (The Full bores are actually black but were painted a dark brown for the costume) If you can get a pair that is brown, From a Milk Chocolate brown to a Cordovan brown, then you'll be set.

As for trying to find SIDIs, it's deffinately NOT easy lol.

As for the costumes, I hope they don't change anything as far as the set up for the Costumes. I always liked how the pilots had seperate Shirts and Pants. Let's face it, unless you have that Full pressure suit, the only way you are goign to eject from a Viper is in a "pod" (think of what's left of Starbuck's Viper in "Return of Starbuck". You can say that when the light bars are activated on the helmets, force fields turn on to seal the helmet, but you have no gloves and no air supply (not the band!!! ;) ) I just don't think there were chances of surviving Combat in a damaged Viper. So why bother with a seperate Outfit? The G-Suit under your combat dress is a better combo. Or hell, intergrate the G-suit into the battlesuit.

I don't mnid if the fit or design of the 3 piece uniform changes a bit, but I'm not a fan of a seperate outfit for the Vipers. As it was, in the original, The Battlejacket was only worn by Viper pilots. Bridge crew didn't wear them, Shuttle pilots didn't wear them (excluding Serina in the deleted scenes) Just Viper pilots. Even the Artic Strike Team only wore the Tan Uniform, No battlejackets.

Just my take. :)
