Maggie actually wrote another version to this that ended up with more blood shed, but it was Starbuck's, not the killers'. It's on the fanfiction archive.

I don't know. Never asked her.

I wonder if she was trying to stick more with the series style. After all, the big stars weren't seriously hurt. They beat up Starbuck a fair amount--knocked him on the head, crashlanded his Viper, beat him up in Triad, chased him with Borellian Nomen, made him pass out from lack of oxygen--but he always was fully recovered by the next scene.
