Once he had turned it down. But then they showed him some numbers that had MANY zero's after some other actual number.

The lens flare thing made sense for his polished Star Trek world, not so much for Star Wars. Plus he will be playing within Star Wars canon, not doing an end around.

Re: J.J. Abrams to direct Star Wars 7
Yeah, I think even he admitted he may have carried the lens flare a bit too far for the last movie.
He won't be surrounded by a lot of his Bad Robot alumni for Star Wars like he was for Star Trek, so who knows how far his creative input beyond directorial status will be carried....I don't think it'll be as extensive as it was for Star Trek. Actually, a large part of the reason that JJ accepted was because he'd heard that Lawrence Kasdan was one of two folks involved, who were responsible for the success of Empire Strikes Back. Saddens me I can't remember the other guy's name....but it was reported that JJ went through the roof when he heard they were involved. Good Lord, I just love reading the fanboy tripe about how the latest Trek was nothing like "the true spirit of Star Trek". (It wasn't intelligent or boring enough). The beauty of science fiction (especially in a universe as diverse as Star Trek) is that it can mean many different things to many different people. The same can be said for ANY sci-fi or space fantasy show, book, or movie. |
Re: J.J. Abrams to direct Star Wars 7
I thought that Kasdan was not doing anything with Ep. VII but for possibly VIII and IX??

Re: J.J. Abrams to direct Star Wars 7
You may be right on that score, Charybdis. I only remember that it was said that JJ pratically hit the roof in joy when Kasdan's name was mentioned. :)

Re: J.J. Abrams to direct Star Wars 7
I don't see this as being good for the Star Wars fandom. I was psyched to hear the last three movies were going to get made but when I heard who was directing, my heart sank. I'm worried that it will look more like Star Trek than Star Wars.

Re: J.J. Abrams to direct Star Wars 7
JJ Abrams was a Star Wars fan before he even started doing Star Trek.
Also, consider that he will not have the full backing of Bad Robot Productions like he did in Star Trek. Likely he will have directorial input only, and not quite as wide a range of creative input as he did in Star Trek. If it's any consolation, a vocal minority of hard core Trekkie fanboys/girls screamed (most impotently) about how JJ's Star Trek looked or felt too much like Star Wars. |
Re: J.J. Abrams to direct Star Wars 7
The one thing about this is this...hiring a specific director does not necessarily guarantee success. What did people think of Prometheus, even though Ridley Scott was directing? What did people think of the SW prequels even though George Lucas was in total control of those films? What did folks think of Bryan Singer's attempt to reboot the Superman franchise?
Having Abrams as a director doesn't say nearly as much as who is writing the script, or who is acting in it does. People get so enamored with certain directors, who do have some control in the direction that the film takes, but not entirely. It might be good, it might be bad. You never know until the final result hits the screen. |
Re: J.J. Abrams to direct Star Wars 7
An excellent point, Bryan.
The director might be the guy who gives the film its....well....direction.....but there are tons of other people involved that can make a film a success or a bomb. Ironically, if a film tanks though, the director is usually the one being blamed, just as he is often praised for its success. |
