OT - Space: 1999
In the face of doom and gloom with the "Battlestar Galactica" remake, I had some interesting things happen both last week and today regarding another science fiction property.
In a nutshell, "Space: 1999" is on it's way to being revived. As a continuation. I had a "Tom DeSanto-esque" moment over it, too, as I got to participate on some of the foundation building on this endeavor. ;) We have "Lost in Space" which is getting back on track as a continuation (a la "Next Generation" of sorts) with various original cast members and the new "V" being developed by Ken Johnson as a continuation with original cast members... and now this. (The only major drawback: Only one or two original cast members, plus the next generation on Moonbase Alpha. Still, this is exceptionally exciting if it comes to fruition!!) Now, if one of our favorite shows would just turn out as a continuation, too... One can only dream... Michael (who runs http://www.space1999.org in his spare time... or lack thereof.) |
There's definitely a name change afoot, so I'm told. I'm not privvy to it, though.

I have to say: I'd look forward to seeing those CGI Eagles from http://www.space1999eagle.com gracing the small screen, if it could happen...

Great news!
I've been a big fan (more of year 1 than 2) since I first watched it on channel 9 here in L.A.!

now if only space above and beyond
would come back XANATOS |
Hey XANATOS
SAAB is my wife's all time favorite show. OWD |
Space: 2099?
Any idea on who's handling the proposed continuation? Will Gerry Anderson be involved? Are they talking about a feature, miniseries or another syndicated TV series like the original? I certainly hope that the SciFi Channel doesn't get their smelly fingers on it.
"Space: 1999" was one of my favorite TV shows growing up, along with "Galactica" & "Star Trek TOS". I remember my parents getting me one of the Eagle model kits for Christmas (around 1974) and I couldn't wait to put it together. Seeing those Eagles on screen again along with the crew of Alpha would be fantastic. |

Not as bad a fate as what I did to one of my Vipers, though. The scale of teh model was just such that model rocket engines fit well into the holloed out model's engines. Gave new meaning to "Launch all Vipers"! Needless to say, the second attempt was going to necessitate some additional structural work to contain the engines better :D |
All I can say is "Holy Frack!" has Hollywood gone nuts!!!!!
Do you realize that all three of my favorite sci-fi shows are about to be ruined: (Star Trek w/Enterprise, BSG w/Moore's remake, and now Space: 1999)???? This is getting to be too much. Mike, why all the remakes? Why can't they just go out and find new ideas??? I'm sure there's thousands out there. What's going on? Make some sense of this? |
It all has to do with marketing. If you have a familiar name than there is an established product to work off of. Remember the old Starsky and Hutch TV Series? There is a remake in the works as I write this post. Original ideas are a gamble that studios don't want to take.

New ideas
Hollywood is devoid of new ideas - why do you think there are so many damned "reality shows" on TV now, aside from the fact there aren't hardly any talented TV writers? (I don't watch any reality shows). You think a network would take a chance on a show like "Baa Baa Black Sheep" or "Buck Rogers" today? Hell no, they stick with something that is safe - cop and lawyer shows, and sitcoms about young singles or overweight comedians with beautiful wifes. And look at the slate of new movies coming out this summer: almost all of them are sequels.
Regarding "Starsky and Hutch": you know who's in it? Ben Stiller as David Starsky, Owen Wilson as Ken Hutchinson, Carmen Electra as his girlfriend and Snoop Doggy Dogg as Huggy Bear. Upcoming pictures include "S.W.A.T", "Bewitched" and a live-action version of "The Jetsons", featuring Britney Spears as Judy Jetson (one rumor I heard). Even "Star Trek" will get another sequel in spite of the poor box office for "Nemesis". |
oHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Michael,
Thanks for this news :) It's made at least one person happy (me!) Oh oh oh! Scurrying off to the website now .... Space 1999 was *the* show of my childhood. Fingers |
Re: OT - Space: 1999
And we see how well that went.
If there is to be a coniuation or reboot, it will have to be fan-based. The NitWerks will not do it for us. |
