Future's Past by The 14th Colony -- Discussion Thread
Ron,
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this summary outline. There is a lot of potential for your idea. I will enjoy the day when I can re-read this story in its final "publish ready" form. Excellent job!! BST |
Thanks, thanks a lot. I'm thrilled that you enjoyed it. Thanks for reading it and linking it.
|
Good effort. Thanks for posting. Cylons motivated by prophecy, an interesting thought. Time can not be changed, another good idea.
|
What antelope said. There is one thing to which I will only say  so that I'm not spoiling it. Overall a very grand story. Would love to read the finished one when you are done. :)

well, Richard kinda did it to me twice with the same character in the first book of his that I picked up (Resurrection), but he pulled the character out of that  situation with a lightship.....
Something like that perhaps? |
I loved it, having read it again! This would make a good movie/continuation. The end ... I agree with Jewels. Of course, I respect your reasons for that. Any way to edit the download so as to include the Galactica soundtrack while reading?
14th ... what if you took this synopsis and "stretched" it out over 20 or so episodes and made it the missing season of Battlestar Galactica? Your story is definitely big enough to cover that much ground. |

20 or so episodes, like a TV series? That could work, though it is really one story mixed with different character storylines, unlike something that could be 20 or so seperate episodes with their own contained story. But, I suppose it could be worked out so that there were contained storylines along with the continuing storyline through a series. Kind like a BSG "24", or maybe "72" since the story takes place in more than one day. Although, it is really set up to be a few week's time. But anywho, at this point it wouldn't work, with a BSG already on the air. BTW, perhaps a sequel might be in order. Anyone insterested in reading a follow up? |
You know, you all, I would like to talk about the story itself with those who've read it, but I don't know who else has read it and who is yet to read it, or this thread, so I am reluctant to discuss the story in detail with spoilers. Which is a shame, though if anyone reads this thread to decide whether they want to read the story afterward, I don't want to reveal the ending or spoil any surprises and plot twists.
|
Well that's why I didn't get specific in my comments. Out of respect to any future readers.
|
Why not just add a spoiler warning to the topic description? Let's discuss! Let's discuss!
|
Having just finished the story - very good. The finished product should make a great read, please continue.

Okeyday, Stray Viper, let us discuss. Discuss away, Stray! |
In going through stacks of old papers in a vain attempt to organize, I found my original 11 year old notes from my original story and found it interesting. It was not called Futures Past, but "Battlestar Alexia". That version of the story did not involve the Pegasus at all, but instead as well as the Galactica, the new battlestar Alexia that they had built in the shipyards of the Veearrgens. In that version of my story, Apollo commanded the fleet from the more advanced Alexia while Colonel Boomer commanded the Galactica at the rear of the fleet. At the time, it was my way of upgrading the design of the ships and vipers by throwing in the prior treaty with the Veeargens and the use of their shipyards, but I had basically kept the main characters (Apollo, Starbuck, Boomer) as the main part of the story while reducing the Galactica itself to secondary flagship status. So it was the Galactica which stayed behind (rather than the Pegasus) to rebuild the colonies while the Alexia continued leading the fleet to Earth. I am glad that I later changed my mind and maintained my love for the Galactica itself and kept it as central to the storyline, though I had sketched rough drawings of the battlestar Alexia and they were quite cool looking. I wonder if I'll find them again amid my messy world.

I look forward to reading the complete story it looks very, very promising
|
Thanks!

Soooooooooooooooooooooooo WHEN will it be UP? :)
|
Do you mean, when will I put together a rough draft continuation of the present rough draft, or when will I rewrite Futures Past into a solid, publish ready form? I don't know the answer to either of those, unfortunately. To be very personal, I have been dealing for several years with depression, anxiety, racing thoughts, what I think is ADD, and a resulting extreme writer's block. I've got one formerly completed novel (that I need to do some major reworking to) that I never got out on the market which has been wasting away for several years; 2 unfinished spiritual dramas; an unfinished Star Wars novel (with a 74 page detailed summary); a planned book of poetry, song lyrics and short stories; and detailed summaries for each of a nine book sci-fi series that I've been harboring since I was a child. And lately about the only thing I find I can focus my thoughts well enough to write are the Last Word Becomes The First Word and other word games in the Cafe.  :wtf:

By the way ........What you describe could well be AUTISM rather then ADD. Other people who have had those symptoms are Micheal Deangelo ......... and Albert Einstein .........and of course me and my kids ............Don't give up... Just put one foot in front of the other and keep going 14th colony ........you can do this. Whether you're ADD or Autistic .......it's little more then a learning disability that can be overcome if you know how to work around it. |
It's not autism, it's the after affects of traumatric head injury many years ago. I'll tell you more in a private PM. :)
So where in the world is Stray Viper? Yo homey, you said you wanted to talk about the story! Whenever you're ready! :salute: |
I'd like to read it, but I can't find a link too it :/:

This is one of those little things that we forgot to tell you about! The reason that the thread wasn't there is that it is over 30 days old. When you are on the Forum page (for the Colonial Library or any other of the sub-forums), there is an area in the left-hand bottom corner of the screen that looks like this: Display Options Showing threads Sorted By: Thread Starter Sort Order: From the: The default, at CF, is to display threads for the LAST 30 DAYS. However, in the "From the:" drop down menu, you can select a number of options for displaying the threads. Most often, the easiest one to choose is "From the: BEGINNING". I just "bumped" the thread, to have it appear new. Otherwise, you can use the above method, to scan the database for any thread. BST :) |
Yes, I eventually figured that out on my own too. I thought it had disappeared, to save server space. Maybe if someone "bumps" the thread it should stay on page.
