So, what's the difference between downloading a show on the net, or taping a show, and sharing the tape with people?
To me, it seems that sooner or later, it's going to cost an arm and a leg to be entertained. :( :colonial: :bg04: :cylon: :Ncylon: :viper: :viper2: |
The TV industry is going to have to react a lot faster than its doing. They aren't going to be able to stop downloading, that's just a given. But if they get their act together they can ween people off of peer to peer services and into a service like itunes. If people find it easier and more convenient to get their shows from the official network website, then the networks can provide shows with the advertising intact. If they don't provide that service, and users just get used to DLing shows that have already had the commercials edited out, then they're screwed. And ultimately, so will the viewers.

The best thing about this saga is.... apparently us evil Brits are leading the way!
A survey by web tracking company Envisional puts British downloaders at 18% of the global total, followed by Australia at 16% and the U.S. sits in third place at 7%. Full story at - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4276255.stm One thing I can understand about this story is that people in the UK usually have to wait weeks, months, even years (in extreme cases) to see shows from the US (a situation you are currently experiencing with the New Galactica series), and sometimes these shows are mistreated (poorly scheduled, cut, moved from slot to slot, etc) once we do get them - so the demand for an alternative solution is there. It's up to the TV companies to sort out the problem, or it will hit them in the pocket. Ian W359 |
Here's something you'll like - the top 10 pirated TV shows worldwide....
(Source : Envisional) 1. 24 2. Stargate Atlantis 3. The Simpsons 4. Enterprise 5. Stargate SG-1 6. The O.C. 7. Smallville 8. Desperate Housewives 9. Battlestar Galactica 10. Lost Ian W359 |
Interesting.
I would assume that BSG and SG:A are the only ones that are download heavy in the US, while the other shows are most heavily d/ld in Europe. |
