Brannon Braga on Trek's future; Enterprise; Galactica; New CBS series (http://www.greatlink.org/dcisV2.asp?url=http://www.greatlink.org/shownewsitem.asp?item=4439)
The transcript of Brannon Braga’s (Enterprise Executive Producer) comments during his talk on "The Philosophy of STAR TREK" lecture at Claremont McKenna College, is now online at BrannonBraga.Com. Here’s a few comments from the full article:
"For those of you that don’t know, the latest incarnation of Star Trek is a prequel. It takes place about one hundred years before the Original Series. And I didn’t think the decision was a bad one. After three shows set in the 24th century, were we to put on another one set in the same century? No. We had to do something different. We thought it was cool to do something that was a little more primordial so we could see how everything came to be. We also decided to make it much more of a character-driven show, and because the characters were closer to us, because the show took place about 100 years from our time, we could deal with people whose reactions to things were more contemporary. That may not have clicked with audiences. We thought it was a good idea. It may be, though I don't know for sure, nor does anybody, that maybe people wanted their Star Trek to be a little more traditional. It is possible that that was a miscalculation. I'm not sure. I'm not sure."
"....As far as I know, nothing [is planned for a new Trek series on TV]. I mean nothing, in terms of television? Nothing. I know that there's a feature film in development, I don't know anything about it, I am not involved with it, but I don't know when it might see the light of day. I have no idea. But in terms of television, I'd be very very surprised if they even started talking about it for a long long time. That's just my opinion. So I wouldn't expect to hear much about Star Trek for awhile."
"....You know, to some degree I wish I could go back to all of the episodes that I wrote, because there is stinkiness in them all. I mean there is always some cringing moment you know that you look at… I have written some real stinkers. I really don’t want to stand here and list them, but I am sure you can probably tell me what they are. There were things, though I did not write the episode, though I did co-write the story to the final episode of Voyager, I wish we had gone back and done certain things to make [Endgame] more satisfying. I don't think it was a wholly satisfying conclusion to that series."
"....In terms of television, it would be great to see someone like HBO do something where, you know they only had to make 13 episodes, and they had two years to make them and they were just incredible. A really good show right now, if you are looking for something is BattleStar Galactica. Its an amazing show. And that’s on the SciFi Channel. But I don’t know what is out there. I would hope that’s going in directions like Transmetropolitan which are very complicated storylines and much more ambitious."
"...I think that the show Lost for all intents and purposes is sci-fi. It smells like sci-fi to me. They don’t explain what is going on, but it is obvious that something supernatural or science fiction is going on and that’s a mega hit. And from my perception it is effecting the other networks, now everybody is starting to look for the next ‘Lost’. I am working on a science fiction show for CBS [called Threshold]. Not typically a sci-fi network. And other networks are developing science fiction as well. I think science fiction always has a chance…Science fiction isn’t going anywhere."
"...I am not supposed to talk about [Threshold] too much but it involves... It's a contemporary show, set today, that involves a woman who is a contingency analyst who works at a think tank, who is enlisted to investigate the possible arrival of alien life. It's called 'Threshold.' Which is also the title of the worst episode I ever wrote in Star Trek, but it's a coincidence! There are probably a couple people in here who know that. Maybe not. But that’s the logline for the show. It’s been printed in literature from the network and that’s really all I am comfortable in saying right now."
