View Full Version : Sad news: death in the family

Hi all,
Last night my spouse got a call and quickly left for the hospital (far away in another city). This morning at about 6:30am I got a call - my mother-in-law has just passed away. She was about 82, although women in her family tend to live into their nineties. She had surgery for a brain tumor about 4 years ago and never recovered. She has been in that terrible half-awake state all this time, only showing cognizance by occasionally squeezing someone's hand.
My fondest memory of her was a few short years ago she came to live with us, and we watched a Spanish novela together (a soap opera with an ending). We made such a strange pair, being so different, and though my Spanish is weak she would help fill in the gaps for me, while I helped describe plot twists to her. (The show was called Maria Isabel starring the lovely Adela Noriega).
It is so painful to happen just now so near to Christmas. Her family (and my spouse) will be taking her back to her homeland in Central America for burial, so it looks like Muffit's family will have no Christmas this year.
I would appreciate your thoughts and prayers for them during this difficult time...
Affectionately,
Muffit

Muffit,
I'm sorry to hear the news. Times like this are never easy and happening so close to the holidays makes it especially sad. You and your family have my deepest condolences. If there is any positive outlook to this, it may be that you're mother-in-law will no longer be plagued by any infirmity. May she rest in peace.
You and yours will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Muffit, I am very sorry for this untimely loss. I do hope that somehow, despite this, your family can endure and have a Christmas that's warm and fuzzy like your avatar image.

Thank you to those of you who are the new replies. :)
Some new news that helps ameliorate matters a bit, looks like the trip and funeral will have to be delayed until after the holidays after all, as the offices that handle the international stuff will be closed. So on a bright note (perhaps because of all of your kind well wishes :)), the family will be having Christmas together after all. In fact, we will even have some guests as well.
Looks like your thoughts and prayers are already helping :)

Thank you Amberstar, sorry I took so long to get back to you.
An update - the international paperwork is finally all squared away, and all the relatives here in the U.S. (including my spouse, sigh) are off tonight to Central America for the funeral, along with the remains of my mother-in-law. Her wish was always to be buried beside her mother (whom I knew also - she was ninety something and LOVED Star Trek TOS - so I gave her my 25th Trek anniversary pin and captain's shirt patch - and she loved pork fat and smoking a pipe, neither of which seemed to trim her years any!). Am alone with my daughter for about a fortnight (she can't miss school and it would be too expensive for all of us to go).
Am hoping our cell phone will work over there so I can hear if they arrive safely. Got some international calling cards too which are extremely reasonable ($5 for 30 minutes, which is normally $45 for 30 minutes by regular phone) when they are in the city (no phones in my mother-in-law's home town).
Please my friends keep them in your prayers and hope for a safe return.
You all know where my thoughts will be...
Affectionately,
Muffit
