View Full Version : Let's Talk About Our Names, Sigs, and Avatars

The 14th Colony
September 4th, 2003, 08:27 PM
How do you define yourself on message boards? By the choosing of your user name, by the signature you leave at the bottom of your posts, by the avatar you choose to display? Does your avatar and/or user name and/or signature show others some of your personality and nature? Why did you select the name and avatar and sig that accompany your contributions to the forum? Are they movie quotes, personal quotes, what? I find Warrior's signature quote intriguing, hopefully he might explain it here. Ravyn's avatar is bright and cheery, and I wonder if it is a representation of how she sees herself. Conundrum's avatar reminds me of the time travel pod in Seven Days (is that what it is?). And Jewel's avatar is just beautiful. I love that type of space imagry. You all may have noticed that my avatars and sigs do not remain the same. I have accounts on 4 or 5 message boards, and different avatars, sigs, and user names on each of them, because I constantly get bored and prefer to change them. That is a result of my stifled creative nature which is desperate to escape its captivity.

Likewise, I filled out my profile fully, yet I notice many posters here have left their profiles vague or completely blank. Why is that? Why not tell a bit about yourself in your profile, so that people who read your posts can find out something about you? By all means, peruse my profile!

USER NAME: Well, "Tovor" is my name on GalacticSenate.com and the main name I use in several places, but when I signed up here I wanted something Battlestar-ish. I thought of the 12 tribes or colonies of man and the 13th, Earth, and figured that the 14th colony could be me and mine. So, 14th Colony I became.

AVATAR: My first avy here was a photo of me behind my Lego model of Coruscant, the galactic capital world of Star Wars. My next avy was a close up of a building of Coruscant seen in the movie, the dark spire of Darth Sidious. My next avatar (which may be changed by the time you read this.) is a cartoon face drawn by me many many many years ago when I used to doodle in my books at school. Usually on other boards my avatars, which change every time I get bored of them, are meant to show a side of myself, or something funny or surprising that people who know me wouldn't expect, or maybe just a scene from a movie that I dug.

SIGNATURE: As I write this, I don't even remember what my sig says, so I will have to post, check it out, and edit this afterward.

Now it's your turn. Please explain your user name, your avatar, your signature, and even your profile if you feel there is something noteworthy there.

Hi 14th! I guess my name is pretty self-explanatory. After joining, the folks at CF were so kind and gave me the daggit avatar, which I love.

I wanted something about Battlestar Galactica that symbolized both the endearment we felt for the show and my own (often strong) feelings. I felt Muffit was like a spark in us that reminded us of the simpleness and joy of youth, while showing courage and devotion (Fire in Space and frequently biting Cylons) too. BSG was a true family show, touching people of all ages and genders, and I wanted to represent that.

My first sig is from my favorite book, The Little Prince by Antoine St. Exupery. I first had it read to me in English then later when I learned French (which I have now mostly forgotten) it became the huge inspiration it is for me now. As any of you know if you have learned more than one language, it is truly difficult to render an accurate translation and still capture the intricacies emoted by a foreign phrase, so reading it in French really opened my eyes. The book is almost totally about how we lose what is truly important, the essence of life, as we "grow up". Hence my sig, "The eyes are blind; one must look for BSG with the heart". Anyone who knows me, knows the day I grow up is the day I will truly die.

My new second sig is from a movie I just saw. That one line from the show summed up my own fear of loving people and animals, and why.

:muffit:

P.S. This is a cool idea 14th, I hope others will join in too! :)

nightscape2112

hiya,

interesting topic, i am curious about the origins of some of the handles here.

to answer the handle question first there have been three handles i have gone by, the first one when i found message boards and chat rooms was "1insomniac". i had that name because when i first signed on to to net i stayed online for 20+ hours a day(no joke). people would leave the chat rooms and come back in the morning and i would still be there. so the name just fit.

the second name i used was shadow4321, i used this name when i started lurking more and posting less, again it just fit.

the name that has stuck has been nightscape2112, i have had this name for over 5 years and i am in no hurry to change it. the way i came up with nightscape (not related to farscape) was i was sitting at my p.c. one late night and sat thinking about a new name. i was looking outside and though night....night.... then the view i was looking at came scape. so nightscape was born, i added the 2112 for one of my favorite albums rush's 2112. and i have been nightscape2112 ever since. now i use nightscape or nightscape2112 at all of the bboards i goto.

i find it strange for people that have 20+ names and how they manage them. i dont know if you know much of the clone wars that were at sci-fi's bboards. but if i had to keep track of more than one name i would go nut's. i am not talking about the people that have different names for each board, i am talking about people that have many names for one bboard.

i did have a name i used at sci-fi's bboards when they started censoring me, that one was "heretic", i think the name is self explanatory. i never broke there rules and i am a very courtious poster. they only censored me because i was pro galactica and anti moore.

ok to the next question, my signature. i use poerty quotes, there are two reasons i use them. one they have a special memory for me, a moment frozen in time. the second reason is, i hope that by reading the passage i use it will encourage people to read the whole of the poem (although when i had a passage from dantes inferno, that one is a bit of a long read.) . i always give the authors name and and title of the piece.

o.k. the avatar, i am into fantasy and sci-fi. i found this avatar of the dragon and thought it looked cool, so i use that. i have used other avatars anything from ranma 1/2, buffy tvs, battlestar galactica to the death star in ep. 5.

about my profile i just never got around to it. i think i put something into mine. i really did not think many people read them, because i dont.

well, have a good one and i wil enjoy reading other replys to this topic.

er uh...

(looks at carpet)

BAD DOG! BAD DOG!

:D LOL

ROTFLMAO

okay... I just spent too many stress filled hours lately. :)

Yes, this avatar and name is Seven days related. My previous name was thomas7g cause I am "Tom". And I tacked on the last part cause I didn't want to be Thomas23234. And Thomas7g is relatively untaken. :) Warrior got tired of receiving a ton of email from the site, so he made me take it. My regular email blocks any person I haven't put on my addressbook so I had to quickly come up with another name. :)

My sig I made up one day cause of the mini series rewrite which seems to have totally ignored what made BG a show that we all love.

Ravyn's is my buddy. I've known her for a long while. I helped her with a big problem and we've been good friends ever since. And the avatar reflects her happy bouncy side. I made her that one day. :)

CaptainTux
September 5th, 2003, 12:29 AM
I do not have an avatar because I have not found one that suited me. CaptainTux comes from my love of Opensource software, the free software foundation, and Linux. More importantly is what those things mean to me. It is free as in free speech, not free beer. It is also the sharing of information in a community to improve the community for all. In the GPL you have access to the source code of a program and if you make improvements you submit it back to the originator so the improvements can be sared by all. That is an oversimplification of it all, but here is the main attraction.

My father always told me that you are better than no one. Everyone knows something you do not. If you wish to improve yourself, you should find out what they know and incorporate it into your life. It is only fair to share something you know as well. I write my theologies of life in pencil just in case I learn new information.

If free speech I am hoping to exchange ideas and improve the community I live in with the sharing of knowlege and experiences. For me, CaptainTux represents my willingness to share what I know with others and glean from their knowlege. Should anyone have an idea for an avatar, I am all eyes!

Starbuck
September 5th, 2003, 05:50 AM
My user name comes from my favorite comic book series as a child, X-Men. It's easier for me to stick to one name 'cause I've been known to be forgetful when it comes to names and passwords on BB's. My signature is a quote of Starbuck's of course. I don't have an avatar yet, although I do have several awaiting a final decision at the moment. :)

LadyImmortal
September 5th, 2003, 06:11 AM
My name is fairly simple. I *love* Highlander - both the series and a couple of the movies. (And I'm in love with Methos, so there, lol).

I was looking for a name to use to buy my own website name and this one popped into my head and it wasn't taken so I took it.

Let's see... my signature, I think is 'Never Give Up, Never Surrender' which, of course, I got from Galaxy Quest but which I use as a sort of 'motto' when it comes to getting a Battlestar Continuation Going.

If you came to other boards I hang out at, though, you'd probably have a hard time figuring out which name is me - unless you know me well. I don't use the same nickname in different genres.

Michael Garibaldi, played by Jerry Doyle, after my favourite character from my favourite science fiction program, Babylon 5.

Sheridan, "So in other words, you're perfect for the job, because you're paranoid and compulsive"
Franklin, "Or compulsively paranoid"
Garibaldi, "Who told you to say that?"

The digits at the end of my handle are from an old phone number of mine, that's sort of stuck with me.

PlaidSquadron
September 5th, 2003, 07:28 AM
On other boards, I go by -eric-, since that is my name, or tamu87 since I am a proud member of the Fightin' Texas Aggie Class of '87 (whoop!)

Here I wanted something reflective of BSG. I loved the first episode where Starbuck and Apollo fake out the Cylons by pretending to be various other squadrons (orange, purple, etc) I thought the name PlaidSquadron would be both a tribute to BSG and relatively humourous.

I haven't put in asignature or Avatar yet.

Warrior - obviously a tribute to the show
the Wolf - You are from Washington? You snarl and bite? :p

Thanks Muffit and everyone for responding. What I also wonder about are the icons under some people's avatars. Like Cononudrum and Warrior have the same icon, which I assume is the symbol used by all board admins. But there are other people who have had varying and curious icons. Self designed or no, I wonder. And how do I insert some nifty personalized icons of my own?

Warrior,
The name Warrior, like PlaidSquadron said, is a tribute to the Colonial Warriors, IMO.
You admire the beauty, agility, fierceness, and pose of the great gray wolf, a warrior of the forest. "The Lone Wolf" ties in somewhat with your signature, which implies that you have a destiny and a mission that you must fulfill on your own with no risk to others. You are a chosen one, and you must walk your path alone but for the benefit of others.
The Path I Walk Is Forbidden To You. I Must Walk It Alone.
It also reminds me of an Obi-Wan Kenobi quote:
"Your destiny lies along a different path than mine."

Actually those mean something. The ones me and Warrior have is the badge Adama wears. And it is used to symbolize webmasters and owners of big BG websites and forums. There is also a badge that is the Kobol medalion adama had on that pyramid planet. That is for honored people like Michael Faries and Ken Thompson. Though we may switch that to the gold warrior Pin. The gold pin will be people who worked on BG the trailer, and stuff like that or did something rather huge. or former mods. (soon to be installed) And silver for current mods cause that's what all the bridge crew had. :D (Also coming)

BST
September 5th, 2003, 02:31 PM
This is an interesting idea and topic.

Let's see --

Handle: If you've been over at Skiffy or Yahoo BG Revival forum, you may have seen the whole name but, if not, BST stands for "BattleStarTrekker". I chose that name because it symbolizes my appreciation for 2 distinct science fiction universes both of which, have had a profound effect on me. I try to keep the same name wherever I go, it's just a lot easier for a not-so-old but, yet cluttered mind such as mine.

Avatar: My current avatar was given to me as a gift by a certain, wonderful admin person (*whispers TOM) and for which I am very, very grateful. The other avatars that I have used are generally pictures which were either e-mailed to me or from newspapers, etc. On this subject, I will be changing my avatar next week, for one day, in remembrance of that terrible day 2 years ago.

EDIT: My present avatar is Shadowfax, Gandalf's horse.

Signature: * This was an attempt at "poke-in-the-eye" humor towards the lady that forgot where she parked her broomstick. It paraphrases what Adama said to Adar on the eve of the Cylon Attack on the Colonies.

EDIT: The Signature is from LOTR:TTT and is what Gandalf says to Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli upon Shadowfax's arrival.

Profile: Upon joining this forum, I left the profile blank mainly because I didn't have such things as an ICQ#, AIM handle, etc. With regards to the "other stuff", I left it blank mainly to avoid any preconceptions about me before I had given folks a chance to develop an opinion of me, through my words.

BST :)

btw, nightscape...I thought that's what the '2112' was for but, never remembered to ask you about it -- (the mind is a terrible thing....) :)

Below is the avatar which I was using at the time when I originally posted this response.

(Thanks again, Tom.) :)

repcisg
September 5th, 2003, 03:30 PM
OK I’ll take a turn.

Handle: Unlike most things in my profile there is a bit of history behind it. None of which has any bearing on the internet. Many Moons back I joined a startup software company as head of development. We handed out sever Id’s based on our initials and the company name and group. So repcisg means rep(my initials) Cynosure (company name) Information Systems Group (my department). The products I developed worked great, were on time and under budget. But the CEO got bored and started to party on the company, he also thought he was the greatest salesman in the world. Well to make a long story short, we found out that most of the accounts that should have bought our products had a bad experience with the CEO at some point during negotiations (I’m being really polite here). So we fired him. I took over and fought for two years to save the company, but the damage was done and I finally closed the doors. After all that I kind of hung on to the handle out of sentiment.

Avatar: This was one of the early Avatars put out at 3Dgladiators for those of us artistically challenged. Again I kind of hate to change it for sentimental reasons. I’m kind of sentimental you see.

Signature: Well one day I was paying a visit to the Doctor, my blood pressure was way to high. This was shortly after I had closed the doors on five years of very intense effort. She was aware of the situation and was concerned that with this “new” problem I might do something drastic. Out of the blue I just laid it on her. Well she figured I must be OK if that is how I looked at things.

Thought it might fit with our current situation. I have another which speaks to my very, very large ego. I have learned over the years to keep it toned down a bit, at least in public.

Profile: Just to lazy to fill it all in.
:D

Senmut
September 5th, 2003, 11:04 PM
Okay. Moi. Well, I chose Senmut because he was an Ancient Egyptian that I have come to admire alot. It's a long story, but suffice it to say he rose from zilch, to become the most powerful man in the court of the Pharaoh Hatshepsut. (BTW, Hatshepsut was a woman. Egyptian has no word for Queen) There is something sweet about their story.
As to the avatar...I like Bogart, and his persona. He was All-American, and never took felcercarb off of anyone.

Flamingo Girl
September 5th, 2003, 11:27 PM
Handle: I had a friend who collected flamingos. I wasn't impressed with them myself, but was willing to look for them for her. After awhile, I started to see what she saw, and so when I found one for her, I'd get another one for me. Soon, she dropped the collection, and I took it up with gusto. I now love them, and have them all over my apartment. When I first started investigating the internet, I had no imagination for a cute nickname like everyone else had, but kept thinking about it. Then one day I had an aquaintence over, and when she walked into the apartment, she looked around and said "YOU are the flamingo GIRL!", and I liked it and took it. I now use it as often as I can, or some misspelling of it.

Avatar:Well, not to get all drooly or anything, I am something of a fan of Dirk (esspecially as Starbuck), and it is no secret on a genre devoted board I frequent. When they threw a party celebrating its first year of existance, one of my photoshop heros on the board created this picture as a party favor for me. This was the first time I had a real use for it.

Signature:Three quotes. The first is from an episode of BSG, Starbuck said it to Cassie. Can't remember off the top of my head what ep it's from or what it was in reference to, but it seemed to aply to my life, so...
The second is from the chat with Richard, when someone asked him what Dirk thought of his character being turned into a woman for the mini.
The third, well, as some here may remember, earlier this year, I cut the end of one of my fingers off, and this was a philosophy that sprang from that incedent.

And as for my profile, I've never been very good at that sort of thing, my life is a series of stories, and I just don't seem to be able to condense them into one short story.

Dawg
September 5th, 2003, 11:49 PM
OK, I'll jump in here, too.

My handle is the same as one I used a number of years ago (on a poetry board, no less  ), and I happen to like it, so I used it when I first found CF. If I'd known I was going to become so involved in BSG, though, I'd have tried to come up with something a little more clever.

My signature originally came from a line in a favorite book of mine by a favorite author (if you've never read some of Janet Kagan's work, you're missing out - see if you can find "Hellspark", or the Star Trek book "Uhura's Song" - they're both excellent. So's "Mirabile"). Although I may just change it back to that line (it's amusing, but you have to read "Hellspark" to get it), my signature right now it expresses my feelings about BSG.

My avatar was also a gift from someone I hope counts as a friend (Hi, Tom), because I am totally hopeless as a graphic-artist-type. This shot represents, to me, a moment of hope in the midst of doubt. The parallels should be obvious.

My profile tells it pretty much as it is. I make my living in a small law office (I'm the office staff, not a lawyer), but I'm really science fiction's answer to the wild popularity of Steven King - I just have to be discovered yet. I live in the Pacific Northwest - always green (except for my lawn) and the best place on earth to live (if I can't live in Hawaii).

A bit not otherwise discussed - today (9/5) is my anniversary. I've been married to Mrs. Dawg for 13 years and a handful of hours. Some of the most challenging, and without a doubt the most wonderful, years of my life. I just wanted to say that out loud.

Good night.

Oh, the finger is doing a LOT better now, Muffit, the huge injury has shrunk to a tiny scar, and it no longer feels like I'm getting stuck by a pin every time I touch it to something, although it does feel "odd".

I really don't recomend anyone try slicing bits of their fingers off.

Oh, and thanks Logan.

Here it comes....

Handle : Well, I came up with my name when I first went online in 1999. I wanted a name that I could use everywhere, rather than have a name on each Bboard I was on. Given that my surname begins with the letter W, I decided to add something suitable to the end and shortened down the star 'Wolf 359' to 'W359' (after the battle with the Borg in Star Trek : TNG).

Avatar : I got this from the set that was available from BattlestarGalactica.com a few months ago, it's one of the IL series Cylons on Gamoray from 'The Living Legend'. I chose this as it seemed suitably unique, plus the IL series Cylons had that distinct English accent (what is it about the English accent & villany?)

Signature : Bit of a kooky one this, I got it from a song on the CD '20 Golden Showers' by Bubonique, a David Bowie spoof called 'Ang On Ronno', where this guy is attempting to sing something close to 'Life On Mars', and a sample in the background is saying "Destroy the Tin Machine!" (Bowie's former band, geddit?!)....... Kinda cool, but kinda ironic given that my avatar *is* a tin machine!

My turn........
My handle, Amberstar is part of my name. (I bet some of you have already guessed that). Amber is my middle name, and star represents my fascination with outer space. Since I was a child I have always wanted to travel through the stars! I try to use this name whenever I join a group, if it is taken I add a few numbers that follow. It's easy to remember that way.

My avatar was also a gift from a wonderful person! Thank you again Tom. I tried and tried to come up with one of my own, but soon discovered I was horrible at it. I really liked Athena's roll in BSG. She had potential to develop into a strong leading lady for the show.
I also think we all have potential to do great things in our life if we only try.

Signature, that is one I haven't come up with yet. Still looking
around for one that I just have to have!:D

Congrats Dawg! Here is to a long, happy life together with the Mrs. ( Sorry, It's a belated wish. )

Gemini1999
September 6th, 2003, 07:09 PM
Here I go...

The Handle - This is something I came up with on the fly... I wanted something that would speak of BSG, but of one of my other SciFi interests as well. The "Gemini" part is my astrological sign and it is also the name of one of the 12 colonies in BSG. The "1999" is from another short-lived 70's Sci-Fi show, Space:1999.

My Avatar - This was an interesting journey as I was having a hard time finding one to use and couldn't. I found some Ralph McQuarrie pre-production drawings of BSG on the net and using Microsoft Photo Editor, sized it down to fit the parameters for CF. Somehow, I can't get it to work over at CA! I love the pre-production pic of the Galactica in front of that striking blue/white planet in the background - it was always one of my favorites!

The Signature - I wanted to use a quote from one of the original BSG episodes, but not one that was terribly familiar. I was watching "Saga of a Star World" and the scene where Tigh is collecting uniforms was where it came from. I loved the fact that all of the characters were given lines where some humor was brought into the storyline without making it look silly or stupid. That line always gets a laugh from me when I hear it.

Best Regards,
Bryan

Flamingo Girl, yeeeooouch! I hope it was just a section of skin that you sliced off and not inclduing any of the bone. I myself did the same thing last year, and boy did it hurt and bleed. I manage a one hour photo lab (in an Eckerd drug store) and one day last summer I was cutting negatives in the negative cutter/sleever. You push the neg in to the plastic sleeve and stop so that the space between the frames is over the metal edge, and with your right hand pull the handle down so the small blade cuts the negative. I was rushing to finish an order while the customer was standing at the counter waiting, and unwittingly pushed the neg in too far so that my finger tip was under the blade as I pulled the handle down. I let out a yelp, along with a colorful though unprofessional word, and grabbed my finger as it literally poured blood out. I had cut off, or cut out a section of skin about a centimeter wide and seemingly very deep, and it would not stop bleeding even as I ran it under the sink and surrounded it with paper towels. I am not hemopheliac, but I do have type 2 diabetes and I have heard that that is why I bled so much. The assistant store manager freaked out when she saw it and insisted that I close the lab and go to the ER to get stitches. Before I left, I gave the customer her negatives and photos and told her that if she found any of my finger in with her negs it was because I always put a part of me into my work. To make a long story short, I didn't need stitches but they put a butterfly on and I wore a thick bandage for a week. There is a scar there now, a small area with no fingerprints. If I was a cat burgular I would put that one finger to good use!

Oh, and I just changed my avatar again. That pic is of me when I was 13 years old, the day before my bar mitzvah, and the photographer who came to my house to shoot family pics before the event had me pretend to do something I enjoyed. So in that pic I have a small pen knife and pretend to be working on my Galactica model.

As for my signature, which I did not explain in my introductory post, it is my attempt to shamelessly promote myself. :D
The first link urges you to check out my sci-fi art thread on another message board, where I have on display many of my Lego city creations and Star Wars and other sci-fi drawings.
The second link is urging you to check out Star Wars message board where I am extrememly active as "Tovor".
The third link is just me being a practicioner of lame humor. Go ahead and press it, I dare ya!

Then there is a quote of the conversation between Adama and the President of the human colonies on the supposed eve of the truce with the Cylons. Obviously, I have embellished the quotes to a great length!

Then there is another shameless plug for my answer thread, where people can ask wise me about any of the strange quirks of life or the world that they must know.

September 9th, 2003, 09:52 AM
I have been involved in the BSG online revival since 1998. I wanted a username over at Skiffy and when trying to come up with one, I chose the little known character of Charybdis, from the episode Murder on the Rising Star. (I know that some think that it should be spelled Karibdis since that's how Apollo tries to spell it, but since BSG is replete with historical references to gods, etc. the Charybdis in Homer's Odyssy is spelled with the 'CH'). Since I began roleplaying in our Battlestar Callisto group, I created a character with that name who is actually the original Charybdis' nephew! Ortega was blackmailing him, he had to get rid of him!

I use the "holy frack" signature because that was one of my favorite "cuss" lines from the series! And I use it as my email address as well.

I don't have an avatar but am wanting one!!! hint, hint ;)

Shatter

This is a great thread, 14th! I've enjoyed reading about everyone!

Handle: I've been a longtime fan of science fiction and comic books. As some of you might have guessed, my handle comes from the title (and main character) of the comic book series produced by First Comics in 1984. Shatter was created by Mike Saenz and Peter Gillis, and has the distinction of being the first comic book that was entirely produced on a computer. All of the art was generated on a Macintosh with 128K of memory. The storyline and setting was reminiscent of Blade Runner. By today's standards, the art in the books looks somewhat rough. But at the time, it was revolutionary.

Avatar: Heh. Well, I haven't been able to snag an image from the aforementioned comic book that suits me. For some reason, I had the image I'm using in my "My Pictures" folder at work, and I liked it. :)

Signature: My current signature comes from one of my favorite sci-fi movies of all time, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai. It's a bizarre, quirky movie that perfectly fits my offbeat sense of humor. John Lithgow's performance as Dr. Emilio Lizardo is one of my comedic favorites.

Buckaroo is a favorite of mine...how come they never made the sequel???

Shatter
September 9th, 2003, 06:17 PM
From what I have understood, Banzai didn't do all that well at the box office. I've heard several factors blamed, including that the film was not sufficiently promoted, and that the movie was too off beat to perform well in the mainstream market. Whatever the reason, it apparently didn't do well enough for studio execs to be willing to invest in a sequel.

Interestingly, Ernest Cline, a would-be screenwriter, wrote a screenplay for Buckaroo Banzai Against the World Crime League, which you can download here (http://www.ernestcline.com/scripts/bbawcl/). There was also talk in 1998 and 1999 of Fox developing a Banzai series entitled Buckaroo Banzai: Ancient Secrets and New Mysteries, but development seems to have halted. :( You can find a lot of info on the proposed series (and a lot more) at the Buckaroo Banzai FAQ (http://www.figmentfly.com/bb/bbindex.shtml). The official Buckaroo Banzai site, The Banzai Institute (http://www.banzai-institute.com/),is well worth visiting too. :)

My Signature:

Generally changes with the current events of the BSG production, but I'll settle on something more personal when the smoke clears.

My Avatar:

These also change depending on the wonderful source material that the Hammer/Eick/Moore Hydra give us in their updates and statements. But I'll also settle on something more personal with this too when the smoke clears.

My Handle:

It's actually the name of my psuedonym which I apply to all of my artwork and writing. I always thought that if I ever did get any kind of noteriety, even locally, I'd want to seperate my public and private lives. My psuedonym is Jaeson K. Jrakman. It's my real first name, but the last name is something I came up when I was in Middle High School. As a kid, I was a big fan of the old 30's and 40's black and white horror movies. Plus I'm sort of a Goth. Jrakman is actually a combination of my two favorites; Dracula (Drac), and the Wolfman (man), with the D changed to a J, and the C changed to a K. Jrakman.

Wow, this was cool to read.

Handle: My name is Julie, my real life friends and my spouse call me Jewels and insist it must be spelled like that. I had no clue what to use for a handle when I came here last year (my one year anniversary as a poster here is next week). Long & short--I used my nickname.

Avatar: the planet & nebulae one is on hiatus for a bit: I made it from 2 NASA photos in photoshop. My current one (yea, that's Jane Seymour, a year or two prior to BSG) was given to me by Thomas. It disconcerts me still. I'm more comfy with my planet.

Handle: My original one was from the Lord of the Rings. It was in a poem about Aragorn, heir to the throne of Gondor. Somehow for me it described the "gold" that TPTB were missing in BSG and it also describes the "gold" we may not see in the people around us. The entire poem is: "All that is gold does not glitter. Not all those who wander are lost. The old that is strong does not wither, deep roots are not reached by the frost. From the ashes a flame shall be woken. A light from the shadows will spring. Renewed will be the blade that was broken. The crownless again will be king."

My current signature is an Annie Dillard quote: she set up that statement with a story about learning to split wood for a wood stove. Every time she aimed for the wood she wanted to chop, she only knocked it off the block. Once she learned to aim for the chopping block, she was able to split the wood. She paralleled that to achieving goals in life, sort of saying you have to aim for your goal and through the tasks to achieve it to actually reach your goal. Annie writes about the process of writing and crafting your words as well as fiction.

I would like a continuation of BSG to happen--I don't see the path or the tasks to make it happen, but my mind can see the goal. Because I can see the gold that lies beneath 25 years of dust, tarnish and wandering.

Greetings everyone, fellow BG fans. This is my first official post here at CF, and it is the culmination of lots of time, anxiety, and hard work by Thomas. Tom -- thank you so much!

My name - Stray Viper. It just sounded cool, and I have always loved the Viper fighter. Even the continuists had to admire it -- the new Viper is strikingly similar to the original.

My avatar - I assume I have to post a few more times before I get an avatar. I don't seem to have that option right now. But when I get one I want a pic of Apollo, because it matches my sig which is a quote from him.

Great thread everyone!

My username is from one of my two favorite AD&D characters from my college & grad school days. Lucian had a long and interesting history, and was quite fun to play. Since Lucian had more of my personality (my favorite character was loosely based on BG's Starbuck, complete with description, "looks a lot like Dirk Benedict"), I choose Lucian and the first character of his last name (sometimes with a number) as my on-line user name.

My avatar is a knight, since a knight's duty was to accept challenges and to protect the innocent or downtrodden. In this case, Battlestar Galactica and science fiction are definitely being stomped upon by the SciFi Channel. My signature reflects the knight avatar and our valiant but possibly quixotic fight against SciFi and the mini-series.

P.S. Welcome, Stray_Viper

Lusitan
September 17th, 2003, 03:16 AM
My turn now.

Handle : The lusitans where a tribe of celtic origin that ocupied the north-western part of the iberic peninsula (northern Portugal and the spanish province of Galiza). They resisted the Roman invasion for almost 200 years before being defeated. Most portuguese consider them our ancestors.

Avatar : That is the Portuguese coat of arms.

- The five blue shields represents the five moor kings defeated by the first King
of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques, at the Battle of Ourique (1139).
- The dots inside the blue shields represent the five wounds of Christ when
crucified.
- Counting the dots and doubling those five in the center, there are thirty dots
that represents the coins Judas received for having betrayed Christ.
- The seven castles represents the fortified cities D. Afonso Henriques conquered
from the moors.
- The globe represents the world discovered by the Portuguese navigators in the
fifteen and sixteenth centuries.

Signature : I first used it as a tribute to all those involved in any space program, after the last shuttle accident. I compare what they're doing with what my ancestors did when they took those litle boats and decided to explore the oceans, establishing the sea route to india, the first voyage around the world, etc.

September 17th, 2003, 06:56 AM
Back in Highschool, every so often I'd write a story where one of the characters was named Cobrastrikelead. It was established early that he was a fan of BG. He often wore a black t-shirt. The other characters usually got most of the lines, so he didn't have a whole lot to say. One of the rules of the stories were that if Cobrastrikelad played a trick on another character, unless it was to save the day, the trick would almost always backfire. It was only a question of how much and to what extent. My teachers tended to roll their eyes skywards whenever I handed in an assignment. And invocations like; not again, here we go again, and why me, were often quoted.

cobrastrikelead
September 17th, 2003, 12:42 PM
that the ten sensible handles I had picked out were all taken in some form or another, and I chose Cobrastrikelead as a last resort.

Hello, all,

Very interesting backstories for your SN's, Avatars, and Siggies. This place already feels familiar to me because of so many familiar names from other boards.

Well, like nightscape2112, RUSH is one of my alltime favorite bands. I picked martok because he is one of my two favorite Klingons (the other being General Chang,...my moniker on Skiffy and Cylon.org) The reason that I picked 2112 as a suffix to my screenname is because martok (on its own) had already been taken at Yahoo.com. So I thought of a number that remained indelible in my mind...that of one of RUSH's greatest albums 2112.

The signature I chose on this site is due to a sudden surge of approval from people who come to see my band's shows in Charleston, WV. We recently picked up GoldenEarring's "Twilight Zone" as a coversong, and it goes over like Gangbusters! Granted, it is an old song, but it is a rocker, and people's jaws literally drop to the floor when we play it. I finally prevailed upon my band to play this song. The last couple of bands I was in wanted to do "Twilight Zone", except for the drummer. He felt that the only GE song we should do would be "Radar Love". My response to him was: "Every band around here, and their best Garage band friends has played Radar Love to death. I have never heard a band around here do Twilight Zone." My perserverence paid off, and now we have people rockin on the floors and in their seats when we play it.

My signature on the Cylon.org is from a line of dialogue in the pilot/movie of BSGTOS. "Forgive me, Mr. President, but the Cylons hate us with every fiber of their existence."

I also have a cool email signature from my martok2112@yahoo.com.

"You know you're a Harry Potter fan if, when approaching the automated doors at a supermarket, you flourish your hand and incant 'allohamora'."

Still waiting to do an avatar here. My avatar on Cylon.org is simply a wide shot of a Cylon Centurian.

Respectfully,
martok2112

There were the 12 colonies of man.
Then, the lost 13th colony, Earth.
And then there are the faithful fans, the devoted ones patiently hoping for a continuation revival.

They are a colony all their own, the 14th Colony.
Mesa back to talk some more and bore, bore, bore! :p
I explained the top third and bottom third of my signature earlier, but now I should explain the newer middle third which ties in directly with my user name. The sig explians "14th Colony" perfectly as the loyal colony which ties in with the classic original series, the patient, hopeful fans who want nothing less than a revived continuation of the classic beloved series. And so I am the 14th Colony, and perhaps so are YOU. Warrior must have been inspired by my user name for he asked me (In the Battlestar Novels thread in the Feedback section) if he could use 14th Colony to name the fanfic section at BattlestarGalactica.com. Thus I am honored to have a section on the official board to be named after the concept of my user title. Pretty cool, huh? It makes me even more proud to be none other than the 14th Colony! :D

We changed the name of our dart team to "Sith Lords" (and would rearrange a letter if we lost) and all took "Darth" names.
I figured Bob Marley as a Sith would be humorous, and signify a preference of vices.
Other humorous Sith Lord names included Darth Oswald (Lee Harvey),Darth Diggler(Boogie Nights),and Darth Holliday (Tombstone fan).

Ok so like I was told to mosey on over here and post on this thread. (quit nudgin I will intro myself soon enough...can you believe it I have the case of the shy's) (for those that know me...quit laughing....)

Avatar: Michael actually found this for me after I moaned a bit about not having a jedi avatar or jedi smilies (which I am still moaning about that...hint hint). This is actually Bastila Shaan from the game Knights of the Old Republic. He was sweet enough to put in my signature purple blade for me. (my blade color regime has grown since then as has my collection)

User Name: Dark Jedi.... hhmm self explanitory I guess. My first REAL costume was an all black jedi costume that I made myself (only to find that it resembles a few designs in EPII - the only thing I stole from them was the leather tabbards). I have a character background on my costume and she is a shadow jedi - not good not bad. Others told me that the name fits me because I tend to get really mouthy (oh boy do I tend to do that... :erk: :nervous:  :duck: The name actually has taken on many other reasons as the time has past. Personal reasons, but good reasons. It's always good to have friends like these on the boards (Charybdis, Jewels, Thomas, Micheal, Micheleh, Dawg, Muffit, OWD, LucianG, uhm uhm Ojai22, uhm Warrior! yipes... uh... JJrakman.... ok so there are too many to name but they all tend to keep me in line at some point....(sorry guys...) Yes I LOVE Star Wars, that's never been questioned.

Signature: I have actually used 2 different ones.... a quote from Cruxshadows "walk away" and then this one from Evanescence. Each signature I have used has been dark-ish, but it reflects my feelings. Sorry don't feel like going into details, if I did well...this is already long enough as it is. lol

So! There's a small peek into the mindset of the Dark Jedi (scarey huh?!)

The sig line is just because I got a kick out of Starbuck's reaction to how they added the 2nd pulse generators on his recon viper in "the long patrol", and my avatar is just a pic of my head on Starbuck's body with the help of Photosuite :D

But please turn off your lightsaber...you've already sliced off one leg from this table, and it's teetering precariously. And I only have two legs, don't want to have to teeter like the table!

And, check your PM box please. It is so inconspicuous that I often don't realize when someone's sent me something.

Are you ready for another? :colada:

It was so long ago, and there had been such confusion with DeSanto finding himself off the project and RDM on, that when the remake nonesense began last year I got the projects mixed together in my mind as far as what was planned and what was not for each version. When it was announced that the Cylons would be humanoid, I had been dismayed that the Imperious Leader design wasn't part of it.

Okeyday, my dear, here is another :colada: , and why not have another :colada: as soon as that's done? Heh heh, someone might think I was aiming to get you woozy. I'd better get that lightsaber away from you before in a drunken mistake you ignite it and split someone in half by mistake...like me.

Holodoc is a nickname that a friend gave me & I just tacked on the 2000 to it for that is the year when the nickname was given to me. Any Star Trek fans here should be able to pick up on the meaning of Holodoc. It is short for the Holographic Doctor from Star Trek Voyager. :)

Sig Line: Mainly a listing of a couple websites & a few of the character names I have going currently in a couple RPG's. :)

Hi Everyone

My User Name - Vectrex70

Comes from the Vectrex system and represents my interests for all vectorscan systems that was used in StarWars, Battlestar Galactica, to all the vector scan video arcades that was made in the 1970's to the early 80's.

My Avatar is based on the built in Vectrex game, Minestorm. The snapshot was made from the mess emulator.

My signature was from a Quote from Dr. Seuss. I forgot how I stumbled on it, but I can tell you that I liked it to have my signature.

I did not had time to finish my public profile but I will finish it as soon as I can!

My User name comes from the fact thaat I am a Navy Hospital Corpsman, so the common nickname is "Doc". 834 was my badge number, when I was a volunteer firefighter.

My sig is a saying that I saw back in High School. It's one of the only sayings that I actually remember.

I couldn't find any avatars that fit my personality, so I just used this one.

Rowan
May 5th, 2004, 08:17 PM
My Callsign

1) What yours means? It's a name of the lead character from a book
2) Where it comes from (source)? "The Rowan" by Anne McCaffrey
3) What it means to you? Well I identified somewhat with the character the blurb on the inside jacket says "She was the most important talent on her planet (talent meaning psychic abilities) but it was a lonely life especially for a woman who had been deprived of her childhood. The men she loved were beneath her, and she loved no one - until Jeff entered her life"
4) Why you picked it? Well I wanted an easy handle for people to write some handles are hard to spell or type fast, or remember, I wanted something connected to Sci Fi and I wanted something that was relatively uncommon, and I have always liked the name.http://thomas7g.com/battlestar-galactica/smilies/colonial-grin.gif http://thomas7g.com/battlestar-galactica/smilies/colonial-wink.gif

My Avatar
Is a picture of Dark Angel (Jessica Alba) she and I are very similar in size and shape, she's a little taller and I'm a little curvier ;) The character of the Dark Angle is similar to mine in many respects, capable of being feminine but also tough, yet vulnerable, a fighter/ survivor, helping others, soft place in her heart for those society rejects, loves motorcycles, you can count on her. I chose this particular image of her because she has that confident, cocky, tough girl pose going on plus I love the leather outfit...oh if only I had money...

My sig
initially was from the song The Rainbow Connection by Kermit the Frog  ( I have a very special place in my heart for Kermit)

"Who said that every wish would be heard and answered
When wished on the morning star?
Somebody thought of that, and someone believed it,
And look what it's done so far.
What's so amazing that keeps us stargazing
And what do we think we might see?
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection,
The lovers, the dreamers, and me."

I chose this because I am a dreamer and made many a wish on a star and I'm hoping that someday I'll find what I 'm wishing for. I also felt it applied to all of us who have been making the same wish for 26 years.

Right now my sig is a poem I like especially in our current times.
Ok that's my story and I'm sticking to it! ;) :D

Profile
I did have a whole bunch of personal stuff in my profile but then got acquainted with the darker side of BBoards and decided to erase it all...:(

Aeneas
May 10th, 2004, 04:26 PM
My name/callsign? Well, it comes from 2 sources. First, Aeneas was the hero/title character of Virgil's The Aenid, an epic poem on the scale of Homer's The Illiad and The Odyssey . As a matter of fact, it takes place in the same time frame as both. Aeneas is a prince of Troy, one of their greatest warriors(second only to Hector) and as such is the only one of the Trojan nobility to survive the sack of Troy. He and his followers then undertake a long and arduous journey(oft. parell to Odysseus) ultimately founding a settlement on the shore of the Tiber river in Italy...Rome. (I especially like the irony that the Trojans...or their Roman descendants ultimately conquer the same swaggering Greeks that destroyed Troy, makes you think that maybe the Colonials have a chance in ultimately bestin the Cylons, dontcha think ;) ?)

As to source two, being that so many characters in the TOS universe take their names from ancient mythology, I figured "wouldn't it be nice to have a character named Aeneas"? Actually, he's the hero of a series of fanfics(that I ultimately plan to start...someday) titled "Battlestar Prometheus" which takes place approx. the same time as TOS.

Briefly, Aeneas is a Warrior and a Viper pilot. He is the son of a member of the TOS Galactica's crew *spoiler*(a prominent one @ that) and the Strike Commander of the Prometheus' squadrons(hence the sig...it's what might've happened if it had been the Prometheus that either the Galctica or Pegasus had met up with in "LL"! ) His backstory as well as that of the rest of the characters and the Prometheus itself is really interesting--the result of various sketches, shorts, and the occasional foray on fan info sites--the Prometheus was declared missing by the onset of TOS. (O.k., now I've got to start in the suspense will kill folks!)

skippercollecto
May 16th, 2004, 08:39 AM
My Internet name, which I use for everything I participate in, is skippercollector. Usually girls immediately know what it means, but it puzzles guys. Skipper is one of Barbie's younger sisters, and Skipper's been my favorite doll since second grade. I'm talking about 1968, when I got a blonde Twist N Turn Skipper for Christmas. Although I own lots of Barbies and Kens, my collection mainly focuses on Skipper and her friends. Unfortunately, in some of these discussion groups, the name has too many characters, which is why you'll sometimes see me listed as skippercollecto (no R on the end).
My Battlestar Galactica fan fiction name is Tatiana, which I came up with in the early 80s when I joined some fan clubs. I have always liked Russian history, which is where I borrowed the name from.
And as for my given name, it is Mary Ann Elizabeth Wernke.

My username BRG stands for British Racing Green . I'm a Formula 1 fan, so I wanted a name that was linked to the sport and also sounded quite cool. Up until the late 60's, all British teams painted they're cars this colour. Since then they have been painted like a 200mph pack of cigarettes! :wtf:

EXCALIBUR

I didn't discover the internet until just 5 years ago. Once I started finding forums, I would go to choose a name, and everything I could come up with, was already taken.

I looked at the sword I have hanging on my wall, and decided to try Excalibur. In some places it is already taken by someone else, but I use it where I can.

Now, as for the avatar. I saw the original series when I was a kid, but it's been so long I barely remember anything other then the Cylons. :cylon: They were cool looking! :D Having discovered the mini-series on DVD a little over a week ago, I was hooked on the new BSG imediately. I understand those who might not, but for me it's great.

I remember when I heard they were going to be making a new Star Trek series, back in the 80's. I was really upset. Not knowing Gene was involved, I thought the studio was just going to wipe their feet all over the original, in an attempt to make money off of something good, while making something bad. Then I watched the first episode of TNG, and haven't missed an episode of Star Trek since.

I saw the avatar for Apollo on another forum, and decided to use it. I mean, what guy doesn't want to grow up to be a hot shot fighter pilot?

:viper2:

Cool Excalibur!! I have the same problem with the name Rowan aparently it's more popular than I realized, I can't always use it on other forums either.

You have a sword on your wall? I have a "thing" for swords (and to those who know me too well this is not a sexual inuendo I know I know it's hard to believe I'm not going there this time but I'm not!! :D )

I have a passion for swords, Zoro was my favourite "super hero" when I was a young lass and it's a big reason why I loved Highlander. So tell me about the sword you have what kind is it why do you have it etc.

My dad thought I was crazy, I think, when I got a sword. I was 18 or so I think. Then, on our senior class trip to Florida, we went to the Medevil Times dinner theater, and I bought another sword. One of my classmates went off on me. She was literally screaming at me for spending my money on a sword. Oh well!

Last year I ordered Anduril for myself for Christmas. I waited, and waited, and waited, and I finally got word that it had been sent. But, what arrived was the Witchking sword, so I sent it back. By June I was so mad, I cancelled the order. Maybe one day, I'll get around to getting it.

Well, since I originally did this I have changed my avatar. This is one of my favorite scenes in one of my favorite movies with my favorite actor. (the one movie I can recite the dialogue from beginning to end...just sad, that.)

I love everything Alan Rickman does, this pic is from a scene in Galaxy Quest, just before his character starts 'usual' rant about how low he has sunk in his work. And I just like the makeup-brush up his nose pic.

"How did I come to this? I played Richard the Third. There were five curtian calls. I was an actor once, damnit, now look at me! Look at me! I cannot go out there and say that stupid line one more time. I can't, I won't!."

Hi Excalibur! Hi Flamingo! Thanks so much for sharing!

Excalibur, when I was about 4 or 5, I had a friend who lived up the street from me. One day he took me to his house to show me his toys. (No jokes now Rowan :D ).

On his wall was this sword. He told me it was his great-something grandfather's. He fought in the Civil War... wow, what a cool thing to have as a kid!

Flamingo, I love Galaxy Quest too! Just bought the DVD lately in fact. Who doesn't love Mr. Rickman's wonderfully distasteful deliver of:

My callsign, is Ernie90125 and I chose this a while ago. Most people know my real name is Daniel, but whilst I was in school, my nickname was Ernie stemming from my surname (not Ernest but close!) I was usually Ernie when I was doing something crazy...like playing criket in English class etc....

When I first came on the Internet, there was talk of 'odd' people so I decided not to give my real name, so I called myself by my nickname of Ernie....but when I signed up for stuff someome else had usually got the name Ernie. Places would recommed that I add a number on the end...

90125 was the first album I got by my now favourite band, YES. It awakened me to their music, and as I am now working in the music industry, with some of my favourite musicians, including some of the guys in YES...you probably can imagine that the first time I heard 90125 it was a pretty important happening in my life.

Even if I was upset at missing Airwolf for it !

Thus I became Ernie90125 !!!

Gunstar Aries
January 9th, 2005, 03:19 PM
My callsign: When I was a kid, I used grab 8 or 20 sheets of manila paper from the elementary school supply and draw the Galactica, the Pegasus, the Solaria, and most of the ships of the rag-tag fleet, (never could get that damn Colonial Movers Ship right!). I eventually took some of the drawings, cut the ships out stuck 'em on my wall.

Being also heavily interested in warships, I thougth quite a bit about Battlestars in general and the Galactica in particular. There had to be some kind of precursor in the Colonial Fleets, as the pre-dreadnought is to the dreadnought, the 'pre-battlestar'. So, using a naval convention, I called the 'pre-battlestars' a 'battlecruiser,' and decided they would all be named for the Colonies. I drew them as smaller than a battlestar, with only two 'arms' attached to the launch bays on the sides. (As a side note, on the naval boards I frequent, I'm 1Big Rich)

Now, my astrological sign (if you believe in that sort of thing) is Aries, so I started a story we would call fan fiction today about one of these battlecruisers before and after the fall of the Colonies.

Shortly after going online and searching for all things battlestar, I saw this:

http://www.shipschematics.net/bsg/images/colonial/gunstar_pulsar.gif

It looked just like my fanciful Colonial Battlecruiser, and was a really a well done schematic to boot. So my 'Battlecruiser Aries' story became Gunstar Aries. When I discovered the Fleets, it seemed a natural....

My Avatar, and my title of "Stubborn Colonial Warsihp" kind of go together. My friends know I'm hard-headed; that little character seemed to suit me fine. And being a Galactica fan is kind of like beating your head against the wall. Hope springs eternal there will be a continuation, if I only pound long enough. And in the Gunstar Aries story, she's critically damaged, but her crew is just too stubborn to give up on, on their ship or themselves.

My sig line used to "You may fire when ready, Gridley," the line Dewey spoke to the Olympia's commander at the Battle of Manila. I credited it to Commander Dewey of the Battlestar Olympia to his gunnery officer Gridley at the battle of Casmoro Archipeligo, where the Olympia was lost according to the technical manual...

But my current Sig revolves around a young player for the Pittsburgh Steelers football team. Antwaan Randel El was quarterback at the University of Indiana before being drafted by the Steelers. I have to wonder if his mother was influenced by George Lucas in picking his name with the 'Alderaan' like spelling. It's been a running joke between my friends and I that he has a name more appropriate for a Jedi Knight than a football player...

Flamingo Girl, Big BIG thumbs up on Galaxy Quest and Rickman!!! Favorties, both, By Grapthar's Hammer!!

Rowan and Excalibur, on the subject of Swords, let me recommend an ebay seller with the user name of 2310. I own a pair of their two-handed swords, and they are EXCELLENT. VERY high quality and the seller is truly a pleasure to do business with. An they're in Canada, too, Rowan. Right now they have a nice 17th century rapier up on ebay, among dozens of other things.

Regards, all,

G A :salute: :warrior: :colonial:

Excalibur, may I highly recommend, La Morte D'Artur (in English, preferably ;) ). This is the definitive resource for all things Arthurian. Lately, it has come under much criticism as to whether any of it is actually legitimate, however, being a lit' major myself, I have a strong feeling many works like this will turn out much like Homer's Illiad/Odyssey, rooted in fact passed down orally, then decorated over time to (sadly) suspend all belief. There are some other really good versions as well, and if nothing else, you can learn quite a lot about Medieval customs and phraseology. I am not a fan of contemorary fame-gatherers, who like to diss anything that can't be proven with wildly different explanations (which to me, are even more unbelievable), e.g. the new Arthur movie, etc. I really loved reading these stories when I was a child, The Dolorous Stroke, etc, and I'll bet you would too.

Thanks for sharing Gunstar Aries!! Small world, I have always been fascinated by naval design, from biremes up to and including dreadnoughts (after that, not much interest though). Got lots of books on the subject too, even a very rare one (Architectura Navalis Mercatoria - well, it used to be rare anyway). Something about a ship's lines seem "sexy" to me, have no idea why!!! Yep, I am truly a crazy daggit!!

Bet you all think I have an eccentric group of interests!! :wtf:

Excalibur I’m an odd duck with a fascination with the past and a lust for the future ;) I’m crazy about Sci Fi but I’m equally attracted to the medieval period I love the legend of King Arthur.
Thanks Muffit for the suggested reading :D I’ve read some but nothing authoritative on it.

Thank you so much for the info about the rapier but I’m too poor at this time to purchase it – unfortunately I’m a starving student at this time :D ;) I will keep your recommendation in mind though thank you! Rowan, I was taught french in the public school and I am fine to read most simple stuff eg menus and maps. My son is in the french immersion and is presently in grade one. He will not talk to me because he believes my french is so poor that I am a lost cause. I told him that should he chose not to speak to me in french I would no longer be able to understand his requests for candy in english. Now he constanly corects me until I say the word to his satisfacion. Any advice?

Muffit,

No more eccentric than my own. Let me cordially invite you, and anyone else with an interest in things naval to the Warship Discussion Board, hosted by an online friend, Bob Henneman. Here's the link:

http://p069.ezboard.com/falltheworldsbattlecruisersfrm1

Bob's main site is located at: www.bobhenneman.info/

I'd also suggest those with such interest visit Warships1.com, and check out the discussion boards there, especially Battleship v. Battleship and the Naval Fiction board.

Rowan,

I understand the finances. I've just started grad school, and let's just say disposable income has pretty much been disposed of. I haven't bought anything from Darksword Armory/2310 in a couple of years; but I do check up on what they're listing.

And a 'you're welcome' to both you and Excalibur. I hope if either of you run across any good sword sources or info that you'll share.

Excalibur,

I was a history major, especially studying medieval history. There is plenty of historical evidence for an Aurthur, but he was likely a Romano-Britain (after the Roman's withdrew from the Island) who fought against the Anglo-Saxon invasion. We know from the historical record that the Saxon's suffered several setbacks invading the middle portion of England, and one of the best markers is that shortly after the expected time this Romano-Britain was around, we see a number of "Aurthurs" pop up in history. There had to be some reason people started giving children that name...

I find Autherian legend a great topic, but I'm also interested in the historical Aurthur.

Regards all,

Gunstar Aries

Ok well I never really expected to still be here, after all this time. while I have signed up, to other Websites. But this is the only site that I really return to on a regular bases, and because of it I have Started to get in touch with my creative side again, from the art pictures of the Galactica or a fanfic.

So I want to change my name to something that reflects me, potemkin was only a handy name When I originally signed up.
As I have been greatly influenced by many of the members here, From the discussions in the threads themselves, to the artists and talents of so many.
And feel very much apart of this community. so much so my long dormant and rusty skills of art and so on have been revived.
when i see the works of martok, stevew, westy,thomas7g, and so many more
i was so full of admiration, I would like to say thank you all.

I spent a while looking for a name that I like, the has some link with me (however small). I was thinking of Thor which Norse, but decided against it and went for his Celtic counterpart Taranis.

Taranis the thunderer, whose name comes from the Gaelic meaning 'thunder', was one of three pan-Celtic gods forming the great triad. With Esus and Teutatis. He was seen as the Lord of the Wheel of the seasons and is part of the mainland Europeans Celt tribes, in France and Spain mainly. but not Ireland i think, but what the hell, I am of Celtic stock. etc
The association of Taranis with Fire, the fire of the skies, the Sun, and the fire of the air, lightening and its voice thunder, giving the God his name, Taranis..
signed Taranis. (formally known as potemkin.)
I will be changing my picture in a while to go along with the name change.
look out for my first fanfic its coming soon.

My Callsign: Gravitas was a word mentioned in the commentary of the Mini-Series, I just liked how it sounded.
What does Gravitas mean?:
Gravitas
1. Substance; weightiness: a frivolous biography that lacks the gravitas of its subject.

2. A serious or dignified demeanor: “Our national father figure needs gravitas, [but] he's pitched himself as the kid brother” (John Leo).

As for the really terific Avatar, Rowan found it for me, but for it to actually match the character, he'd need to have a sword in one hand and a full beer stein in the other.

Such a cool thread!
I've always wondered about how people come up with the things that replace their physical presence when we are all in cyberspace!!

Great side discussions about history, too.
I don't think there is anything weird about liking history AND sci fi. Been like that for decades, myself, and hang with a bucket load of like minded bods.

I like my history as the ancient to medieval variety, and to re enact/ recreate not just read or collect. For that particular itch in my life the scratch is the SCA.

For sci fi, well, that part is summarised in my profile, but I have too many books, DVDs and got cable for the classic sci fi FTA wasn't giving me.

This is only the 2nd forum I have joined, altho I have been on a few SCA lists.
Both here and at CA, my handle is Lara. Originally it was going to be Lara's Cat, but the CA board wouldn't take it and locked out any changes (it wasn't the mods, the system..) Sandy rescued Lara out of it for me.

Either way its related to my BSG fanfic, more specifically to fanfic I used to write with penfriends back in the early 80's, but that I continue on my own now.
Lara is a warrior like Sheba was or Athena should have been.
Lara's Cat is the image she allows an entity to take when she has a near death experience after a launch bay accident, that is something close to an angel or spirit. At the time she doesn't believe its real. The proof comes later, but the use of the Cat for me, is to represent a presence that is real, but malleable.

No avatar at this point in time (I'm not clever enough yet to capture one..)

No sig here.
The first one I used at CA (and would use again) is a reference to Lara's conversation with the cat the second time she sees it,

Lara said: You are here?" and Cat replied:
"You CALLED me this time.. Not that your pain isn't a beacon across the seven realities.."

It was appropriate at the time of the clone wars and the diappointment over the deSanto projects demise

The one I use currently there is a quote about the need for Middle Earth in our lives, at this point in history.

Hi Rowan,
I've been in the SCA for 20 years, since joining while at Uni. I reside in the Barony of Innilgard, in the Kingdom of Lochac.

Lochac has only recently gone to Kingdom, previously we were a Principality of the West. Southren Gaard (NZ) were part of Caid, but joined with us to form Lochac, thus breaking the Wests hold on the Pacific rim!!

The SCA is a big and diverse place. Lochac is a really cool part to be in, as we take our SCA quite seriously in both authenticity and fun.

Lochac is a big Kingdom geographically, but since the population of Aus & NZ is only 22 million, group sizes are ususally per capital city and approx 150 people for each group. Our annual get together is held over Easter, and is like a Renn Faire but for members only, so you get to do 5 days of continuous SCA. The Kingdom's biggest war and the best market are there. Innilgard is known for literally taking a truck load of stuff including our own feasting hall and kitchen, and running a big feast for group members and invited guests.

My interests are the english settlement and the anglosaxons, and also food and feasting. I have interest in food from most periods with in the AD 500 to 1600 timespan we play in, and have organised such feasts for up to 120 people in the field or 160 in a hall. I have a few awards and memberships of a few orders, and I've served as group Baroness for 5 years, some time back which was great fun and a lot of hard work..

I get satisfaction out of serving the Crown, Their representatives and the populus with my skills and my energies. (corny, but true..) I love to be able to use my reseach and reading in a practical way. I like that the SCA often brings out the best in people, with courtesy, honour and truth still be assumed first .
I'm also a complete sucker for a good tourney, as we are full contact martial sport, Hard physical contest is a joy to watch.
Its an interest I share with my husband, who cooks too, and does wood and leather work, sings and teaches dance. He used to fight, too, but not so much lately.

I've met wonderful people from all over the world, and one day, when I travel I will attend Pennsic, or even Estrella war. The standing promise while we were B&B was if we won the state lottery (prize is usually 5 million or more) we would take the whole Barony to War..

Mind you, it is a voluntary group, and therefore there are committees, and all the other petty politics that can arise, so not every group is a model of harmony and sharing, all the time. Some Kingdoms are more authentic than others, and many have a timespan they prefer.
We can be sussed out effectively from a distance, as the SCA is all over the net , (It has a high number of computer literate people) As with any large group, some of the net presence is utter rubbish, or plain wierd, but in there there is some cutting edge research and some lovely people just sharing a hobby. There are also the writings of some great thinkers, who philosophise about chivalry and service.

I hope that helps.. feel free to ask other stuff if you want.

Cheers,
Lara

TopGun is the username I use on all Fourms (Top-Gun if TopGun is taken). It stems from a PC Game (well I had it on the Amiga) called Wing Commander where I used it as my Call-Sign, which stems from the Movie Top Gun (funny thing about Wing Commander is that the character you play in Wing Commander I, later becomes Christopher Blair (In WC I and II you choose his Name and Call-Sign), whose's Call-Sign is Maverick :D)

Since this is a BSG Fourm, I chose a BSG Avatar, the Classic Viper.

Rowan
March 10th, 2005, 03:34 PM
The Society for Creative Anachronism :D

The SCA is an international organization dedicated to researching and re-creating the arts and skills of pre-17th-century Europe. Our "Known World" consists of 18 kingdoms, with over 30,000 members residing in countries around the world. Members, dressed in clothing of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, attend events which may feature tournaments, arts exhibits, classes, workshops, dancing, feasts, and more. Our "royalty" hold courts at which they recognize and honor members for their contributions to the group.

Go watch, they won't bite . If its their weekly fighting and A&S (Arts and Sciences) practice its the ideal opportunity to suss them out . Different groups have different focii, so your local group might be big on fighting, tudor costumes, music and dance, the next geographic group might be big on Calligraphy, viking culture, cooking, archery and rapier. After all pre 1600CE Western culture covers a LOT of interests..

SCA heavy combat (sword play) is really cool, as its not choregraphed and it is full contact.

I'm wondering if the event at the fairground wasn't a Renn Fair (Rennaissance Fair) which is not an SCA event, but a public event with a medieval theme? Lots of fun, but not the same. If it was an SCA event, it may have been a regional gathering to cellebrate the Coronation of the next King and Queen...

Cheers,
Lara

Its that simple.

My name choice should be obvious. However, since we're not aloud to discuss TNS, then I can't tell you all about my character, :Nsad: unless you PM me, of course.

libernull is a name i've used just about everywhere, for quite some time now. It loosely translates to 'book of nothing' in Latin. When I was younger, it was what I named my sketch-books, each one being a book of nothing. Online, it became not only my handle, but what I'd name my virtual galleries - book(s) of nothing.

And, yes, for anyone who's curious, I've read libernull & psychonaut - but my handle has absolutely nothing to do with it.

Its a book on the theory of chaos magic. I read it because people kept asking me if my name was based on it. It was interesting, aside from the horrible writing, but... ymmv.

Hi Taranis...

I came across your user name, and I believe it is a celtic mythological name, meaning the Thunder God, is it not?

Great name! Oh and the kipper thing kind of gave a hint to your celtic origins...

My name is coincidently an Arabic name, and means princess or noble.
Also, it happens to be a combination of my first given names...and voila! Sarika was born.

My avatar is obviously the beautiful Jane Seymour, the memorable Serina....

And my signiture was chosen, because those last verses of the opening narrative , still haunt me to this day, as a beautiful and inspiring haunting feeling.

As for the " surviving Piscon Princess" thing well, I am a Piscean and ....just sounded good! ;) :girl:

That Right Taranis was a celtic god . I was think of Thor but that never felt right
but here is what I found about him :)

Taranis is the Celtic god of the sky. He is not exclusively associated with thunder, for he is constantly present throughout the year. The eight-spoked wheel is one of his symbols, which represents the festivals of the Celtic Year. His other symbol is a lightning bolt. Representations of Taranis have been found in several locations across Europe, and there are several surviving altars.

Taranis is also associated with fire, and it is possible that sacrifices made in wicker man structures were for the Celtic sky god. The red of the sunset was believed to be fire created by Taranis.

As the Sky Father, Taranis is companion to the Earth Mother. Rain brings fertility to dry soil. The weather is directly linked to the continuation of life, and every mood of Taranis has a reason behind it.

The sky is an ever-changing canvas of colour and beauty. It is a constant source of inspiration, and it is the gateway to the stars. Taranis balances light and dark and paints the backdrop to every landscape. He allows us glimpses of the ethereal realms at twilight, and wakes us with a sense of renewal every morning.

Yet it is during storms when the true elemental energy of Taranis is revealed. Lightning and thunder show the sky to be a mighty elemental power, living and breathing with spiritual substance. Taranis reminds us of our place in the universe.

On page 1 of this reincarnated thread I answered to the name CaptainTux. For those who have seen the threads of old on the CA and skiffy boards, you will remember I used to end my posts with cheers. I still end my emails and phone calls with it. I have many friends in Australia and the UK and I picked up Cheers from them. My avatars change often and are usually reflective of my moods. Currently, it is an avatar of me. I've been working hard to shed some depression pounds and I no longer wish to hide behind a pic of others. I like me alot these days. I had a bad run of luck with the marriage gone south. It broke me that things did not work out and my self esteem was shattered. It is over and my daughter still lives with me. She is happy and I am happy and I am discovering sides of myself I did not know I had. The current avatar is reflective of that. The romantic and the dreamer. The man who lives by a different standard and is...not fearless...but adventurous. Kinda having fun these days.

Hello fellow Warriors,
My callsign is pretty straightforward. Since this was my first forum that I joined, I didn't have a name ready to use. I wanted one that was unique for me and stated how I felt about Galactica without being disrespectful of those who enjoy the other show with the same name. I finally chose CBSG4ever, which stands for Classic BattleStar Galactica 4 ever.

My signature is somewhat eclectic in that they are lines that I thought were rather eloquint and/or humorous from a variety of shows/movies. Most are SciFi shows.

As for the avatar. I chose that particular one because, out of all the cast, I slightly resemble that character the most. (hair color, etc.) There's a pic of some of us from Fleets that attended the San Diego Comicon this year. I'm second from the left. :)

My User name: Why I came to use it? Well it has been some now that came up with this name and stuck with it ever since and regardless of the BB or site that I frequent, I use it because in days and years of past, I had used many different names and it was getting to confusing for me to remember which user name for which BB / Site I wanted to log into. So that is when I decided to just change to just one user name and stick with it and when I joined up here at "colonialfleets" at first I was thinking maybe I will think of something new, but then I thought about it a little and I figured that It just might fit in.

How I came up with this user name, and seeing as I'm still the new kid on the block here I don't know who may or may not be a Gamer here, and for those that are, you may or ma not may remember a Game called "Earth And Beyond" Yes I’m a gamer. Anyhow the game was an online Multiplayer Role Playing Game and it was closest thing to a BSG and Star Trek (yuppers I’m Guilty I'm a Trekkie as well) that was a role playing game, and when you first started the game you had to pick / create a user name. I thought long and hard to come with it and what I felt it could or would mean and seeing as I like the philosophy (Honor,Respect,Honesty,to Better one self) of the Japanese People and for which they strive for everyday, in ones own life and family.

And thought back on the days when I was younger, I used to study the Martial Arts, not just to learn how to fight, but to learn how not to Fight and know ones own limits and to know when to just walk away and yet to learn how to defend ones self if and when the time came to. And That if you want Respect you have to earn it, is not given out just because you ask for it, in every day life and as well as within a family and then I thought back on Star Trek and the Charactor "Spok" he to embodied the same kind philosophy, then I though of which Charactor from BSG had embodied the same philosophy "Adama" but I wanted to different. I did not to come across as having to copy someone or thing, as much as I liked the ideas of both charactors, I wanted my user name to be unique and to be able to fit in and in more than one place alone. So Hence "JaiQwan" was Born

As for my Signature: I have always from the first time I heard "Spok" say "The Good Of The Many Outweigh The Good Of The Few Or The One" as he gave his own life to save the rest of the crew (yes I know it is just movie and charactor) but the idea of that line and that he was so willing to give up his life so others would not have to die. That not so simple act made me think of my own life and my family and the safety of my family, as well as what I would do If given the same choice? And so that is why I use that as part of my signature, as for the rest of it, it is the New (well it's year old now) Computer that I built for my self and to show the one creative side of me and for the Gamer in me "I never Wanna Grow Up" - "I'm A Toys R Us Kid"

Oh yeah as for my Avatar, there is not much I can choose from here, I'm guessing that is because Im still the new kid on the block and I need earn my stripes sorta kinda and have to fly some more missions. Well either that or get some more time in on Viper Training :viper2:

Ummm okay I think that just about covers a wee wittle bit of me I think maybe kinda sorta :salute: :D

Hi JaiQwan,

Welcome to Colonial Fleets!!

Regarding the Avatar, you may also upload an avatar from your home PC. The maximum dimension limits are 120x120 pixels and 20KB. Other than that, the only other qualification is that it be in good taste.

the only upside is, "I have a good healthy garden" .. do you like rhubarb???

Hi, "Oh great Thunder God....hmmm a Sagittaran....nice colony...I have a best friend from there.....and I was convinced she too was mostly mad  the donkey part well...that was a given :D

I've been here a while and I haven't done this. Well by my name I'm AJ Marks, and my avatar is, for the moment, about something I was doing during the month of November. Its where you start November 1 and try and write 50,000 words of a new story in 30 days. I managed to complete the story, Called "Retrun of the Cimalians" which I am now in the process of editing and hoping to one day publish.
My sigs usually represent either a quote from a movie or what's going on at my website.

Lara,

One easy way, albeit a bit 'crude', is by using MS Photo Editor. It will allow you to resize pictures in a variety of measurements -- inches, centimeters, or pixels. The Avatar size, at this point is 120x120 pixels and 20K. Make sure, though, that when saving the picture, you save it as a JPG or GIF file. Don't save as a bitmap file .. that seems to chew up an incredible amount of storage space by comparison.

Hope that helps.
