View Full Version : Alpha Squadron

I am honored by Peter Noble’s decision to make me head of the Alpha Squadron, and I thank him. I was curious about his decision and he assured me that my enthusiasm was what helped him make his choice. I only hope my enthusiasm for the fight will serve all of us in this endeavor, to bring back the show we all love, and to end the Moore/Eick/Hammer version forever.
The council has decided that our primary mission as Alpha Squadron is to hit the advertisers decisively. I will be sending out two advertisers to write via snail mail, and two to write via e-mail around the 1st, and 15th of every month. It is up to us not only to write, but also to spread the word to other bulletin boards of shows, which are not being shown by Sci Fi Channel, where the fans are unhappy with the channel. The content of the letters is to be confirmed.
Camouflage, and Ian_W359, and others of you who are outside of the U.S., in addition to e-mailing advertisers, we’ll be depending on you to seek out new Bulletin boards to gain new recruits. In addition to BSG bulletin boards, it is ordered that you seek out boards related to shows with fans that are unhappy with the Sci Fi Channel. These would include any show, which Sci Fi is no longer showing. There is a thread started by Peter Noble, which lists these shows. It can be found here:
http://www.colonialfleets.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3001
I would also include any boards of “V”; they may be sympathetic to our cause, as they have just won a continuation.
All of us are also being ordered to register at http://www.icq.com so that we can havelive chats. After you have done so, please e-mail me your ICQ number.
Also as a standing order whenever Sci Fi Channel is being watched to write down any and all advertisers you have viewed and send the lists to me at jjrakman@yahoo.com
We are also being ordered to print up flyers and distribute them to the general public. The content of the flyers will be provided. If you have any suggestions please let me know. As always, my e-mail address is jjrakman@yahoo.com Remember the ultimate goal here is to derail the Moore/Eick/Hammer production, and successfully promote a continuation. Nothing else matters.
Also pleas make sure you subscribe to this thread so you are notified when new information comes up.

Is a waste of time, the Farscape fans are much better organized and have had no joy sending letters to company's that advertise on The Scifi Channel.

There are too many sponsors so it is ineffective. Want to target someone hit the new head of Universal.

this was reported by snstara on the Cylon Alliance board, letters to advertisers do count
Farscape fans were pissed off enough about "Scare Tactics" to start writing advertisers. The thread is here:
http://www.watchfarscape.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9216&perpage=15&pagenumber=1
The short version is that letters to Prestone, Proctor & Gamble, and Energizer got direct responses: they pulled their ads from "ST".
The ratings for "Scare Tactics" were:
3/31-4/6: 1.6
4/7-13: 1.4
4/14-20: 1.2
4/21-25: 0.8
Notice the downward spiral. I'll try to "scare" up more recent ratings when I can, but if it's anything like this...
FYI, "Tremors" has gone from a 2.0 to a 0.8 in the same time span - probably why Skiffy's shelved it till June.
Advertisers are less ego-centric than Network or Studio bosses: Consumers matter because shareholders get upset when consumers buy less product.

One doesn't need letters to realize the show stinks. Jewels I believe two lawsuits may have something to do with the advertisers dropping off.

Kingfish, bringing back BSG the way we want it is like eating an elephant, it can only be done one bite at a time and all of us will have to somehow participate in the elephant feast.
I'm just trying to encourage the ones that want to try this phase that it can have impact.
It will take participation. And it will take the attitude of giving advertisers a friendly heads up warning: Slylie will point to our fan sites' traffic, fan club membership all to say folks will be watching. We need to warn the advertisers that they are being sold a load of felgercarb, that the fans are heavily against this thing. And the opposition mounts every day.

so tell us if you've gotten responses from any of your letters, and what they're saying.
I've been trying to get the word out around here, too, but short of standing on the roof shouting I'm not having a lot of luck reaching people. The TV columnist at the local paper hasn't responded to my e-mail (I'm planning on another this weekend, maybe being a little blunter).
I'm hoping for some input and advice from my fellow Alpha Squadron members - you included - that have been doing this for awhile.
Jewels is right - if there is going to be an impact made on either the production, the airing, or any other aspect of this, as many people as we can get have to be involved. We've already discovered that the neo opposition were mostly clones - let's capitalize on that and use that information to our advantage. I can't help but think advertisers would perk up their ears if they hear that 1) the fanbase they thought was there was phony and 2) the legitimate fanbase will shun their products if they advertise on this show.
Thoughts, anybody?

If anyone wants out, then that's up to them.
If anyone still wants to fight for our show then head on out with Alpha and spread the word.
A lot of people still don't know that the show is a remake. I went on a board and people were outraged when I told them Starbuck was now a girl!
No one ever got anywhere sitting on their ass.
I want my Battlestar Galactica!

I too want to chip in my time. Sorry I have been so late in subscribing to this thread, things have been pretty crazy for me these last couple weeks (not much sleep).
I have visited some related (non-BSG) boards and have gotten some very positive feedback from non-BSG fans, which encourages me a lot. Some of them have BSG action figures and remember the show fondly, and you'd be amazed how shocked they are about the new mini direction. We have MANY FRIENDS.

Just remember the letters will have the most effectiveness as snail mail. The second most effective would be to fax your letter. The third is the e-mail route, but those who are overseas will have to use this to supplement the other letters.

Want to make a difference a real difference? WE can all make a pledge not to buy one piece of merchandie affiliated with Moore's new mini such as toys(Galactica action figures of "Don't hurt yourself Olmos, Kara"I couldn't fill Dirk's shoes if I tried," Dr Love Baltar and so on), DVDs(I will not pay one cent to purchase the mini on DVD), and finally I will not WATCH period(This also means taping the thingy and viewing it at a latter date which is a waste of video tape IMHO).

Another volley sent out today.
You know even if we can't get this thing stopped, these letters will still have a good effect.
Think about it, the advertisers are warned not to advertise during this mini.
The mini gets poor ratings.
The advertisers now see the validity of the warnings not to adverstise.
The advertisers rethink their position on advertising on Sci Fi.
They pull out.
Sci Fi channel is sold to new company.
The new company sees advertisers pulling out due to the actions of the Hammer/Eick/Moore Hydra.
The new company seesk to replace hammer.
A real Sci Fi Channel is born.

Another Volley of letters sent out to the advertisers today. After the excitement of the recent Olmos Rebellion as Conundrum likes to say, these letters may have an added impact. Angry fans + Star telling peopld not to watch. Imagine the advertisers reactions to that. In fact, you may want to adjust your letters to include a link to one of the stories below. Just a thought.

I got a story via google.com/newsalerts @ Trekweb a Washington Post story about Ronald D. Moore's BG mini & his IGN bash of Berman and/or Braga's folly Re: ST Enterprise, she did a Google of Battlestar Galacticia & got about 240,000 hits, then she Googled ST: Enterprise & got 4,500,000 hits. The story remarked about online polls, Michael's 17,000 Pro-continuation petition, then an anti-lyrics 100,000 in one month petition, HELLO PEOPLE that song is still on Enerprise.
Online Petition's do not work! I'll sign em cause I like the person, but I know it is a waste of time.

I would not say that petitions are folly. It is free expression at its finest. And you have the freedom to sign one,or start on in opposition to any given point of view.
I do fear that a barrage of complaints can be counterproductive to sf in general in movies and tv.But it is better in my view that all fans are heard on matters dear to their hearts.

All right Warriors, your being called into service once again for the Final Battle. The January 2nd Mailing Campaign:
For those who don't already know, Glen A. Larson announced at Galacticon that if there was still interest in a continuation after the mini aired, he would work together with Tom DeSanto to bring us one. Here's more info on that:
http://www.battlestargalactica.com/aftermini1800.php
http://www.battlestarpegasus.com/faqs/bg_primer_faq.html
http://www.colonialfleets.com/data/desantoreport.htm
http://www.cylon.org/bsg/bsg-desanto-01.html
And here's your gift, a slide show of DeSanto production stills and drawings for his BSG production:
http://www.battlestarpegasus.com/gallery/desanto_singer_2001/index.html
Thanks to Michael Faries for putting this together. To view it you will need the latest version of FLASH:
http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash
At any rate, to show that there is interest and support for a continuation after the airing of the mini, a mailing campaign has been organized. On January 2nd please send a letter of support to the following:
Mr. Tom DeSanto
c/o William Morris Agency
151 El Camino Drive
Beverly Hills, CA 90212
Mr. Glen A. Larson
c/o Shapiro-Lichtman, Inc.
8827 Beverly Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90048
Mr. Bob Wright
President
NBC
30 Rockefeller Plaza
New York, NY 10112
Jeff Zucker
President of Entertainment Division
NBC
30 Rockefeller Plaza
New York, NY 10112
To make it easy you can send the same letter to all four. And if you've alread posted your thoughts on a forums, just copy and paste your post onto a WORD document and use that as your letter. That way you don't have to start from scratch. But you always can if you want to. Keep it to one page if you can.
This mailing campaign is endorsed by battlestargalactica.com, which is owned by Richard Hatch.
