View Full Version : Expanded Soundtrack Of Pilot Now On CD!
Eric Paddon
February 7th, 2011, 06:53 PM
For years, we've all enjoyed our four CD set of the soundtrack, but it's always important to remember that the source material for that was a set of Stu Phillips' own mono tapes and not the pristine source material in the Universal vaults.
Now, in what looks like the first in a series of planned releases, the mail order label Intrada records, is offering a limited edition (3000 copies) CD of the music for Saga Of A Star World from the Universal tapes in beautiful stereo. And this includes some great bonus items never heard on CD before like the series bumper cue and the final postproduction edit of the theme.

Order now! (I wasted no time). :)

Eric -
Thanks for that. I didn't waste any time either! Never mind that I know the soundtrack backwards and forwards. Never mind that I've got every version of the TOS Battlestar Galactica soundtrack that's ever been released on CD...
Did I let that stop me? Are you kidding???
How many times does something come out that espouses the glory of the original series?
I can't wait to get this one. I'm sure it will be in my car CD player for weeks!

A bit of info gleaned from the comments posted on Film Score Monthly's website... There is a Intrada release for Buck Rogers available:

The Buck CD came out some time ago, and is a repressing of the LP released back in 1979.

Maybe an expansion upon the music from the Anthology.
peter noble

It is an expansion on the anthology.
If you don't buy into this series then you have no right to call yourself a TOS fan IMO.

I have the anthology and to have an expansion or even a 'fresher' copy would be beyond awesome. I'm raring to buy into the series, though the wallet..well, I'll try

Holy crap...is track 42 the theme as it appears in the original film? I had to make my own version of that from the anthology set! That was always my favorite version of the theme. The re-recorded version for the album didn't quite have that militant power of the one used in the movie.
Based on that one track alone...sold.

My CD arrived in the mail today....!
Packaging looks very nice. It includes a 19 page booklet that has a mini-history of the original series, liner notes on the creation of the soundtrack for the pilot episode, some pics of characters & scenes, a full track listing, a couple of pages of producer notes about the creation of the Intrada Collection CD and another 2 pages of "credits" outlining the people that helped bring the CD together. I've added some pics (please forgive the shoddy photography).
It's a very slick package - they didn't skimp on this. I'm going to read through the booklet tonight before bed. I'll have to give the CD a listen tomorrow on my way to and from work since I don't have my home stereo set up at the moment. I didn't want to listen to it on my laptop with it's tiny speakers. I want my first impression to be really good - my car has an excellent sound system.
I'll pass on my audio impressions tomorrow....

Any word on when the other volumes will be released?
Eric Paddon
February 12th, 2011, 04:15 PM
Got my copy today! Thankfully the liner notes made only one minor reference to an unmentionable thing here.
It'll be at least a few months before we see another volume. They have to see how the sales figures are to determine how quick they'll act because while 3000 might seem like a small amount it generally takes a while to sell that many copies through these mail-order labels.

Eric -
I'm glad to hear that you got yours. BTW - I know the one mention that you're referring to.... ;) I noted it as well.
I got an email update from the Monsters In Motion website - they just added the Intrada Battlestar Galactica CD to their inventory, so a lot more folks are going to find out about it - everyone on their email distribution list, anyways.
I did give the disk a listen on the way to and from work today. I got as far as track 31, which is listed as "Outer Space Disco". So far, the quality of the music is wonderful to listen to. What's really odd is when listening to the CD, the soundtrack feels noticeably longer (of course) because of the extra tracks that are included. When you get to the track where the fighters are navigating the Nova of Madigon, it just feels like you should be further along in the story.
The only tracks that stand out to me where they sound better on screen than as a recording are the track that Stu created for the inside of the Carillon Casino. The music sounds "smaller" - kind of like they are early cuts that have less instrumentation or are mixed differently. I know that most folks don't care for the "disco" music that Stu created for those scenes, but I love his choices when he does his outer space versions of pop music.
I'll give the rest of a disk a listen tomorrow and then I'm going to pull out the Anthology set to compare the Carillon Casino tracks to see if they are different.
No matter how old Battlestar Galactica gets as a franchise, I never tire of the music. I'm going to be playing this in my car for at least a week...

Intrada, I'll note has put out some other sci-fi TV soundtracks in the past that are now sold out. They had three volumes of music from "Amazing Stories", plus the "Planet Of The Apes" TV series. You have to go digging for those on e-bay and elsewhere now.
Film Score Monthly some years ago had Stu's own tapes for "Knight Rider" on CD but that too is long sold out.

sounds like a fantastic CD Bryan. Makes me itch more to get the thing. I confess to liking the Outer Space Disco stuff, worked better than in Buck Rogers. Look forward to hearing old favourites like "The Red Nova" and "Apollo's Gambit". Be quite something blasted out of speakers rather than my laptop.

absolutely, the very sound of it right up to the moment at the end as Carillon is gradually revealed and the theme flares up.

Got my copy on Monday and finished listening to it yesterday. It's a real treat of a CD--lots of pieces that aren't in Stu's BG anthology, and different enough from the anthology that I'll be able to enjoy both for years to come. Nice little booklet accompanying it, too. I highly recommend it.

Mine came today and I'm very pleased with it.
The music cues are timed to the original cut of the pilot so it's unlike the previous releases even though some of the tracks are the same.
The sound quality is good and the booklet that goes with it is informative.
