Didn't read the whole thing, didja?
2009 will feature three Doctor Who Specials. Not a full series, mind you, but not a complete void altogether.
And the show has already been renewed for 2010. So that's good news without a doubt.
I think they're giving David Tennant some breathing room. He'll be playing Hamlet in the down time... on stage as far as I can discern. Maybe he just wanted a little break from the super intense world of the Doctor?
So, yeah... something nice and easy... relaxing... a role like HAMLET!! No intensity there...(cough cough)...

nope. read it all the through to the end thank you very much. Three specials are hardly the same as a complete season, and no guaruntee that will be shown in the states. Your right on though about his career shift! Well I suppose we all find relaxation where we can.

Breathing room? How many episodes a year do they DO? THIRTEEN! Good Lord, BREATHING ROOM?
GAH.

Thought Russell T Davis was leaving after season 4? Or has that info changed somewhat. Besides Tennant taking some time off and doing some theater work inbetween. It could also be figuring out who would take over from Davis as well.
But i wonder if one of the specials will be about the 'Time War' since thats one of Davis concept and contributions to the revived Dr Who series overall. and i'd love to see McGann being put back in the role, even if for just a one off special. Cos he was robbed of his own series that would've fleshed him out as the 8th Doctor. And damnit he had the best Tardis control room of all, a real H.G. Wells kinda inspired 'time machine' control room in his Tardis. I'd love to see that and him regenerate into the 9th Doctor to fill the gap inbetween the 1996 TV movie and the 2005 series.
Anyways, i suppose such a break will allow Torchwood and Sarah Jane to grow and develop much more during the meantime. And this will stretch out Tennant's Doctor Who time to 5 years rather than 2 or 3 short ones. Or stay on and break Tom Baker's record (not likely though?) of 7 years doing Dr Who. But more than likely he'll 'bounce' and get back to doing other TV shows or movies soon enough. Which will be a pity, cos after tennant's time everyone will be stuck with a Timelord with only one regeneration left? And giving him plenty more, would only cheapen the series simply to continue it further with more actors!

British and Canadian shows don't have huge budgets to do series with 22, 24 or 26 episodes per year. But they do invest time in doing shows that have stories with alot depth in them. Whats the point of hyping up shows with big sprawling budgets and plenty of episodes per season that get quickly canceled within a year's time.
You can do alot with 13 episodes per season. Think you guys are getting spoiled over there with too many shows that have so many episodes, that are basically "fillers" until some real storyarcs come about in so few episodes per season.
Don't remember seeing The 4400, or ReGenesis with 22 plus episodes and those shows are fantastically written and directed, and each one has some meaning and will play a very strong significant part later onwards within the season. Its basically the same with Dr Who, each episode is littered with tons of stuff if you let it slip by. Don't knock 13 episodes per year, until you've really tried it!

You also gotta remember, the British view live theatre much differently than we do. Here in America you do live theatre when you can't get a tv or movie role.
In England, you run screaming from tv and movies to try to find a plumb theatre role. There's MUCH more respect.

RTD is leaving after the next series is done. I know a lot of Who fans who won't miss him.
