June 12, 2007

"JERICHO" RETURNS TO CBS ON JULY 6

Rebroadcasts From the First Season to Air Fridays at 9:00 PM, ET/PT
For the Remainder of the Summer

JERICHO, CBS's drama about how residents of a small, peaceful, Kansas town band together to survive in the wake of a nuclear explosion, will return to the Network beginning Friday, July 6 (9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT). Rebroadcasts of episodes from the first season will air in the Friday, 9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT time period for the remainder of the summer.

JERICHO, which last week received a seven episode mid-season order following an impassioned display of fan support, will return on July 6 with a rebroadcast of the pilot episode.

On July 13, CBS will present back-to-back broadcasts beginning with "Return to Jericho" (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT), which recapped the first 11 episodes, followed by episode 12, "The Day Before" (9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT), which launched "Jericho's" spring return.

The remaining summer broadcasts will consist of episodes 13–22, in which tensions continue to escalate between Jericho and the neighboring town of New Bern as they battle the Kansas winter, dwindling resources and the uncertainty of a new world. The citizens of Jericho must now find a way to unite against these hardships, working together to preserve their community and their way of life as they prepare for an all out battle for survival in the season finale.

Jon Turteltaub, Stephen Chobsky and Carol Barbee are executive producers of JERICHO for CBS Paramount Network Television.

Since the second season may be focused on civil war, ever notice the possible significance of one of the early cast photos? The producers knew from the beginning what happened and where they wanted the series to go. The picture could indicate West vs. East, with the Mississippi down the middle. I'm speculating that the producers may have been clever when they planned that cast photo. Of course, it could just be a Kansas corn field.

Well, I did my best to promote the reruns of Jericho. I sent emails to three co-workers whom I know watch or watched Lost, to tell them about the repeats starting on Friday, and I told two friends whom I saw in person (gasp! real live people!) this week about the show.
I plan to stay home tomorrow night to watch the pilot episode again, and if the stupid phone rings, I will not answer it between 9 and 10 p.m.

Hi,

That's awesome! I'll be watching as well, but most likely on DVR. At least CBS will be counting the DVR viewers this time around!

Hi,

The pilot episode of Jericho that was broadcast Friday night was just added to Comcast On Demand. So Comcast subscribers with digital cable boxes can watch it for free. Go to On Demand, Network Shows, CBS, then Jericho. It will most likely be available for about 10 days. Also, just added is a 4-minute video where the cast thanks the viewers for bringing back the show and there is some information and footage of the 20 tons of nuts sent to CBS.

Regards,

Nathan

Hi,

For those interested, the pilot episode of Jericho last Friday will be followed by Return to Jericho and Black Jack this Friday. Return to Jericho is a summary of the first 11 episodes. Black Jack (#13) is one of the important episodes to watch, where Jericho gets the first solid feed on the outside world. Starts at 8 PM ET tomorrow night!

Nathan

TELEVISION COMMENTARY

Save 'Jericho' campaign got personal for CBS programming chief

BY GLENN GARVIN

ggarvin@MiamiHerald.com

LOS ANGELES -- Bad Nielsen numbers aren't the only thing that can kill a network executive, so when her doctor entered the room after giving her a series of tests, a grim expression on his face, CBS programming boss Nina Tassler panicked. "Oh God, there's going to be bad news," she thought to herself as he reached into the pocket of his white lab coat -- and pulled out a bag of peanuts. Just another Jericho nut, lobbying Tassler to bring back his favorite show.

Tassler told the story of her own unique problems with the American health-care system to a gathering of North American TV critics here Wednesday "just to illustrate how insane things got" during the successful fan campaign to resuscitate Jericho, CBS' nuclear-apocalypse drama, after it was canceled in May.

Mobilizing on the Internet, the fans bombarded CBS with a hail of canned nuts -- a reference to a moment in the show when a group of nuclear survivors responds to a demand to surrender with a single word, "Nuts!"

Along with the nuts and an avalanche of e-mails, Tassler said, she kept bumping into Jericho fans at every turn in her personal life. When she pulled out a credit card at a neighborhood store to pay for some camera equipment, Tassler said, the clerk at the counter exclaimed, "Jericho!" and added: "I sent you an e-mail."

CBS capitulated last month after several weeks of such incidents, the first time in nearly two decades that a broadcast network has relented on a cancellation after fan protests.

"I went on those message boards, I read many of those e-mails," Tassler said. 'And what you saw was a huge segment of the population that really felt they were not being counted. . . . They had a knowledge and awareness of the show that was so detailed and so committed and so passionate, we said, 'Look, this is a rare opportunity for us to really interact with our audience and take another shot.' "

A short one, though. CBS renewed the show for only seven episodes, which will air early next year. And if the Jericho posse can't round up a bigger audience, the show will be canceled again.

"You have got to be our Jericho rangers," Tassler said, speaking to the show's fans. "You've got to recruit more viewers."

Jericho, which takes place in a Kansas prairie town that survives a nuclear war but then is menaced by neighboring cities greedy for the food from its farms, debuted last fall as a surprise hit.

But when the show took a break of more than two months around Christmas, it lost a huge chunk of its viewers, who never returned. Tassler conceded that the network's scheduling strategy may have been partly to blame.

"In hindsight maybe it wasn't good for the show," she said. "I think it may have had an impact, which is why we reconsidered and are putting the show on in midseason." Along with the late start, the network is hoping better promotion and more dramatic story lines will help.

Reruns of the first season are airing now, along with ads featuring cast members thanking viewers for harassing CBS. And next season will start with the marriage of two characters who originally hated each other: a bankrupt farmer and an IRS agent who was in town from Washington to audit him when the war broke out.

Hi,

The Jericho pilot episode is actually available until August 3rd. So if you are a Comcast subscriber and haven't seen the pilot yet, be sure to check it out by Friday! The bonus video (where the cast thanks the viewers for bringing back the show) is also available, along with Return to Jericho (a summary of the first 11 episodes), and 13. Black Jack, 14. Heart of Winter, and 15. Semper Fidelis. 16. Winter's End will be broadcast on CBS this Friday. And if you are not a Comcast subscriber, but reside in the U.S., you can watch the episodes online:

I've become increasingly annoyed by, even a little wary of, the posters who have commented on various Jericho boards by how much they despise the character of Emily (Ashley Scott) and want her to go away or even die. Some of the comments have been downright malicious. At the same time, they want more of Heather (Sprague Graydon), and say that over and over and over again.
I personally prefer Emily and find Heather a little dull. But it doesn't matter to me as to which character ends up with Jake. What bothers me is how cruel the anti-Emily folks have been. I stated at the Jericho site at the IMDb that those particular posters remind me of the bad girls in the movie Heathers. It wasn't until later, long after I posted it, that I realize I had created a bad pun. So if you are just as irritated as I am by the anti-Emily crowd, feel free to borrow my new nickname for them.

I'm waiting on a season one DVD set, I don't watch episodic shows on "TV" anymore. I like to watch on my own schedule and watch as much or as little as my mood dictates.
