View Full Version : Gideon's BG2 3D Schematics...

Gideon
September 7th, 2005, 07:13 AM
Okay, being new and a bit goofy at times, I think that I should just have one thread devoted to the new BG 3d ship schematics. It will prove good for everyone else that way, not to mention myself on posting anything new. I usually am more tidy on these type things. I hate to leave a trail of art on any forum/gallery, or the like, not tomention it being hard for people to find stuff. So, unless anyone objects, I will endeavor to do this.

Later today, I will re-post the first two schematics in this thread, but show just small thumbnails with links to the full-sized schematics under them. I am also going to post two more; the Viper Mk2 and the Shuttle Mk2.

:Nsalute: Happy Hunting!!

Our very own forum owner, Titon will probably appreciate your schematic. I beleive that he had something to do with the design of the Mark II shuttle for the new series.

Well done!

Best,
Bryan

Gideon,
What's your source for the stenciling and markings for these images? I'd like to produce some decals for my Viper models and I'd some ideas to help flesh out the details.

Thanks!
Joseph

:Nsalute: I got most of the pics off of a 3d Model site (http://www.starshipbuilder.com) -I have a model I got back in '03 of the Viper mk2 with all of the markings and textures, but I'll have to zip it all up and send it to you tomorrow (I'm at work now). PM me your email address.

Long time reader, only a few time poster, but Cylon Raider works for me... The only other one that I would like to see is the Viper MkVII. I am just not sure if there are enough views available like there were for the Viper MkII. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the comments, folks! I am planning to have the Raider schematic finished Monday or Tuesday.

As for the Viper MkVII - man... I agree! That would be so cool! I hope to find some good shots of her myself... usable to make a schem of that for everyone. I am also (on the side) making a fun little game I like to call Battlestar GALAXIAN, which I only have two viper styles to use right now. MkVII and Stealthy would fit so cool into that plan as well. Still, it is a long process to make games that look professional and are practical too. It took me two years to complete "Defiant Rocks!" (a Trek-DS9 version of Asteroids), which still might be available on an old site somewhere. But this NBG game is going to be cool when I get time to finish it. Seeing the title, you can guess what it is, eh? More on this later.

:wings: Also... there may be the chance that I might get the views of the new Pegisus CGI and/or the "stealth Viper" as well. Keep your safeties open, friends.

Yes... that is my thinking as well!

I also agree... I look forward to seeing them all, but I am REALLY looking forward to seeing the Viper MkVII, new Pegasus and the stealth Viper. :) This is if they will still be allowed on this forum with the closing of the TNS boards. I apologize if this is no longer supposed to be posted here since it has something to do with TNS. It is not my intension to bring up TNS show/episodes or anger anyone… I am a big fan of ship diagrams, images of them and I like the ships in TNS. The work I have seen so far is great and I hope that it will be allowed to continue.

Gideon, if they are not going to be posted here please let me know where you will be posting them because I very much look forward to seeing any new ones that you do. Keep up the good work!

I just want you to know how much your wonderful work is appreciated here. Such talent with a PC, I'll probably never even come close to equalling it!

I know that things have been kind of weird here the past couple of days, but please don't deny us the pleasure of seeing more of your work. There's a place in the Gallery any day for such great art!

Regards,
Bryan

P.S. - I'm still jealous of the avatar!

I do not know whether this will be allowed to stay or not, myself.
Don B. or someone with mercy please allow this thread to stay. We can change the name. I can do up some cgi schematics like these with tos ships in them too so that it mostly stays on the proper subject. It took me a while to get all of the schems in one thread, I am not that great at this html stuff.

Someone higher up Email me and let me know.
:salute: I submit to anything you would have me do. :Nsalute:

Gideon, I don't think you have any thing to worry about. We can debate what the designs should have been but it's not the models or CGI that is the problem. It's the way Ron Moore is handling a universe and characters he didn't create.

My understanding is Colonial Fleets embraces the art!

I would hope that the work done by Lee S. and others would be well accepted and even longed for. My design work on these schematics is for anyone. When I got on the net in '92, and years following, I spent hours looking for things like this and never found any. So, I do this so others can come here and not be disappointed like I was.

Gideon -

No worries regarding this thread.... It'll stay - even if I have to stand guard over it!

There's no problem with the art whether it be TOS or TNS inspired, so there's no issue as to whether your art is welcome.

As I said, we can host it here in the Finished Artwork forum or put it up in the Gallery - maybe even both.

Don said publicly in another thread that he didn't want anyone to feel the need to leave, nor take their resources with them. It's not about the fans at all.

Just keep doing what you've been doing!

Best,
Bryan

Sweet work Gideon, I am very impressed with your work at Trekbbs.. Vixtor I have heard of because of his Star Trek Conne mesh at Sci-fi meshes. (which I have been looking for in Lightwave for a while with no luck) are you a Max user also for your
designs .. there is a lot to read there so I thought I just ask :)

Believe it or not (and I shudder to even mention this), I put the original starship together pixel-by-pixel in Ulead Photo-impact, but sense I have now at least gotten comfortable with Max... enough to maybe do the task of texturing that bad girl. Eh... maybe not. I'll see.

Rick Sternbach has shown his face a few times in the thread and commented pretty good on Grandeur-A's progress, not to mention he said he will write the forward when I get the USS Grandeur-A Tech-Manual layout under way. I use QuarkXpress to lay out that.

I saw your work, Taranis. Pretty good! With some practice on a few things you'll be up there with some of the best soon.

What I saw, and see around the net a lot, is most of the focus on the ship in the images... let me explain. Yes, the ships are the focus of each pic done this way, but with some decent background work, lighting to match that background, and some purpose in the scene, you'll have a much better shot, I believe. Don't take this wrong, you're good. I'm just helping with the 22+ years of real-world design experience I've been blessed with. The on-looker wants to be pulled into the scene. They need the artist to show them what their mind wants to see. Approach it from an angle like you are taking a shot right from an episode. Have some type of interaction with the ship in the picture, get everything to match and you end up with something more pleasing and interesting to the viewer.

:colonial: That's my two cubits worth. I am interrested in your work, my friend.
Happy Hunting!

Gideon
October 6th, 2005, 04:59 AM
:Nsad: SORRY, friends! The picture link works now.
I am working on my website, which has these type of schematics from different sci-fi genres. Yes, the USS T'Hy'La and it's views were all rendered by me from a model that was made for the International Federation of Trekkers fan-club chapter of the same name. The IFT is a world renown organization of which I belonged to as the head of graphics, in the latter part working only for the president himself. I designed many of their logos, websites, and ship designs that came and went. Several chapters even had ship classes we know today that were specifically sanctioned to them by various authorities of Paramount at one time or another. I have since retired from IFT to go on.

Anyway, I will put the link to the site up when it is ready. I am sure that you can find your way around by some back door, but understand that it is just in it's birthing stages and if a pic link doesn't work, don't fret. I have many schematics on various hard-drives and just have to get them to the web folders so they can be shared with all.

Gideon - Is there any chance of getting the Ships without the background? :) :) :) :)
:/: I'm not going to be the one to get into this discussion, nor the one to refuse info or material to anyone - that's why I do these schematics. So that designers and artist can use them as a reference. I have searched far and wide for some of these, as well as turned design favours for others. Some CGI designers I am affiliated with, one way or another, others don't know me from Adam. I do have most of all of the ships in the schematics I've done... still in their raw form, but it would take me a while to find an exact view in over 10 Gb of folder dedicated to CGI ship views alone.

:( I am sorry if that sounds harsh, I DO NOT wish it to be. I just don't have the time. I am nearly spending all my time as it is with getting these posted. My suggestions would be either trim the views you need out of the background, or be an internet Sherlock Holmes and go find them. There are a lot ov views out there, even in these Colonial Fleets Galleries.

Gideon
October 6th, 2005, 07:30 AM
Come to think about it, are you going to tackle the Galactica to:)
As far as schem-ing THE Galactica... soon. There just isn't any artist I know of who has dedicated time to doing a hi-res model of her or I haven't reached that point of awareness yet. However, that is a LARGE priority of mine... at least in this area of my life.

Thanks for fixing the link... I've very much been enjoying the schematics that you've been posting - they're wonderfully done.

It's really got be wishing there were decent models around of the Rising Star or the Prison Barge - two of my favourite fleet ships from the old series.

I'll definitely be looking forward to seeing your website when you get it finished as well - if there's to be more material like this on it, it will be a very useful resource.

I have a few sources to get these views from and so far no one I know has those two or the two mentioned earlier. I am also looking for the original shuttle, if anyone has one or views of one, and the COlonial Land-ram thingy.

 Oh, wouldn't it be cool to see a land-ram souped up like we trick out our classic cars?! Flames... chrome... 16" mags with spinners... ?

nuGraph, AKA PolyTrans stuff.

It'll convert tS to LW, but does it in a weird way. That is what I sometimes use to convert SteveW's stuff.

Regarding my Rising Star.... I'll see about posting some views of it for use.

Mind you, it is NOT textured (aka quite finished)

;) Those were supplied by Charles Adams. I just put em in schematic form over the week end. They could be Zoic Studios, I don't know.

The Original series Colonial Viper gotten here off the site. Also the pic insert is by Illusion's Tigerclaw.

I had to do a decent patch though. There wasn't one big enough to use...

Anyways... A couple of notes-

Regarding your "credit" for that pic insert- It should go to Tobias Richter:

In regards to the Gemini Freighter and Mineral Ship (and the Colonial Movers, Celestra and Prison Barge)- The new series versions *are* a bit different than the original versions.

I would love to post the image like Gideon and Stevew have, but I am unable to attach an image to this post. On most other boards I visit I am just able to upload and attach the image, but on here I do not see that option unless I am missing it. I have a feeling that you need to have a certain amount of posts to do it on CF and I am not sure how many posts you need have in order to do it. As I don't post often it may be a while before I am able to attach an image like they have done, but once I am able too I will post it. If any of the Admins are able to override this for me or give me an idea of the requirements to be able to do so I would very much appreciate it. I would like to be able to contribute back to the board in a way that I feel I can give something everyone might enjoy. Thanks for any info or help.

Stevew thanks for the note... I had seen that and used it before, but never liked how it worked because I have a slow upload speed at home and needed to find someplace else to store my picture. That being said I found another place to store it and make it available. As I said it is a Colonial Battlecruiser and I used the images created by Zoic studios to create it. I hope that you all enjoy it and let me know what you think.

That right... Just a smaller version of a battlestar. I thought about doing that, but I decided that I wanted to try and get away from the two pod design that was common in the original. That is why I came up with the design that I did. I always kinda thought that the smaller two pod design reminded me of a light carrier not a cruiser where as a battlestar reminded me of a heavy battle carrier. Just my thought on it anyways. Nice looking schematic for the orignal crusier and if you have anymore that you have not posted yet... go for it as I would like to see them. :)

While almost all of these are fantastic, I think the proportions are off on the classic galactica one.

I have the original monogram model, and also took some video at Universal studios florida when they had the original model on display.

Maybe update that one schematic, so it's of the same quality as the rest of your series?

Some cylon ones would rock as well!

Thanks for the comment on the "Titan". I really enjoyed doing that one. I wanted to see a military ship (like a cruiser) that was not a Battlestar that we could have seen in BSG. I have more detailed specs and higher res images if you would like them. Also just so you know I am currently working on making a destroyer as well and would be happy to share that as well.

I would be interested in hearing more about your tabletop RPG that you are working on and if you are going to be making models for it or not. Thanks again for your comment.

What I am doing is working up a 'supplement' to work with West End Game's "d6 Space RPG". So far, I have gathered various images of Vipers, Rag Tag Fleet ships, Colonial Warships and Cylon Ships and I have been putting that together with short biopics as well as d6 statblocks.

I intend on taking some old starship drawings I have done years ago and then model/skin them and add them as additional rag tag fleet ships and potential other encounters.

Once the main bits about the starships and several versions of Vipers are done. I am going to work up information about the the Colonial Military as well as the Civilian Government and the Cylons and how they organize themselves.

I fully intend on incorporating some elements from the original series into this work so that it would be easy to whip up an original series version, if my gaming group decides they want to run an original series premised game.

Anyway, once the entire work is at a "Finished" state, I intend to print out a copy and get electronic copies to my game group in PDF form and run a campaign that parallels, but is seperate from the current series.

What I hope to do is run the fleet as a mirror of what the PCs do with their interactions with one another and certain key NPCs. Thus, if the party is bickering and going at eachother's throats, so will the fleet. If the party is constantly struggling with what to do, so will the fleet. If the party figures out a way to make things work for them, the fleet will do so as well. If the party ignores certain mildly important things I put in front of them, the fleet will do that as well, until a major crisis appears.

This way all the players can play one type of character, such as pilots and I can keep them together for missions/stories without having to split off every five minutes to do a jam session with the one scientist, another with a bridge officer, another with the deck chief and yet another with the two or three pilots.

I also intend on having one of the player characters be a Cylon, without knowing it, but I will leave a few hints and clues here and there until I can spring it on them. (I don't think I would do so as quickly as they did in the new series though.)

One thing I am going to do is play the whole Player Knowledge is seperate from Character Knowledge to great effect. I have plans to have a high profile fleet member be a Doral Cylon that the characters will be regularly interacting with. The players will be constantly trying to figure out ways to out him, but the characters won't have a clue and thus tension and drama will be preserved...

Keeping the whole Cylons can look human thing a "secret" from this second rag tag fleet will be a fun story element to play with.

I have been lurking around this site for a while before I signed up, and I have to say that I HOPE that you keep posting your work here, and I know of a few other sites that the members there would gp crazy over you work ( Sci-Fi Meshes ). I have all of your, and Stevew, work on disc. If you are looking for any references for the
Pegasus, check out sci-fi meshes, there are some 3d & 2d works that you would have to pick up your jaw off the floor.

I'm also one of those who've been visiting here for a while before joing.

Thanks guys for the work you've shown here.

Hey Gideon,

Just wondering if you're still doing the Pegasus from new BSG?

It'd be awesome to see.

Well everyone... I am so honored to have been so much of a service to the BSG modelling community! LOL I've seen my schematics posted everywhere and it's shocking how quickly they can get out, but that's what they're there for, right?!

I'm getting back around and I threw the BSG CGI Bluprints site (http://www.simplesitesplus.net/BG/)back together and it's up again... with some touch-ups here and there. Somehow we forgot it when we moved to over to our own server.

I've gotten A LOT of orthos to go through for TRS-BSG and TOS-BSG and I plan on getting back to making the schematics again in a week or so. I did post the classic Raider and the BS Valkyrie. The thumbnails are below, but I forgot the code to make them clickable, so you'll just have to go over to the site and see.

Oh, if anyone knows of a great detailed set of CGI orthos for the classic Cylon Base Ship, please get them to me (Darren@SextonDesign.net)... not one of my contacts knows of any.

HAPPY HUNTING!!

Darren's back!!!!

Woo hoo!

Talk about a long furlough... At least you found your way back to the Fleet. We tried leaving breadcrumbs, but they kept floating away (zero-g don'tcha know...)

LOVE the Original Girl there. But one little note on the blurb you have on it. Commader Adama had no other name, it's not William Adama for the original Series, Just Adama.

Hey, you're right! Thanks, I didn't even think about that, man! Got it fixed with the correction (just access the same link)
