How many people have played this. Why i ask is it wasn't the game play that i purchased the game for, it was the story and cut scenes.
What did everyone think of this (somewhat TOS based) game?
For the record the Mark 2 was in the game and it shot lasers instead of bullets. To me it was a breath of fresh air compared to what we have now with GINO.
THoughts on it?

Titon,
Are you talking about the board game, or the Mattel electronic version that you could move middle, left or right?
Seriously,
I've played this game twenty times, and couldn't get past the 2nd mission. I gave up, until I read on this site that there were certain cylons that needed to be killed. I haven't tested that yet.

Don -
I'm guessing that you're talking about the video game that came out a couple of years ago. It was actually a "prequel" kind of game - it took place while Adama was still a Lt. With the TOS sound effects for turbos and laser fire, it's like a dream come true. You get to fly a Viper and blow up Cylon Raiders - wahoo! The game isn't one that like an easy game to play - the AI is somewhat unpredictable and the "save game" points in the game are spaced pretty far apart. I think that the major difference during game play is the use of missiles - both the Vipers and Raiders have them.
It's a blast to play! I need to get my PS2 hooked up again (forgot about it after the move) and play BSG some more. It's frustrating, but cathartic at times!
Best,
Bryan

mikedx, it's the Sony playstation game developed by Warthog back in 2003. I actually got to meet the maker of the game at Galacticon. The game Bryan actually was different than the one we got. The developer actually produced the game all TOS. It had nothing to do with the new series. In the end Universal and the suits made him redesign it to go with the new show somewhat. He was severly pissed but refused to change to much of it. In the end we got the new mark 2 viper and of course the premis of the game revolved around the cylons being created by man.
But to this date if anyone has a playstation 2 or X-box get the game. It's a bugger to get through but the cut scenes are worth the price. I'm sure you could find it rather inexpensive right now.

I haven't got the game but I've seen a number of the cut scenes. Eden FX nailed it. Sorry Titon, but I'd love these guys to take a crack at a TOS project.

Sorry Titon, but I'd love these guys to take a crack at a TOS project.
No need to be sorry. Personally i know quite a few of the artists at Eden. They were also at Foundation before it went belly up.
They really get it over there. To an extent so did the guys at Foundation. In fact a number of them donated hours of work on Richard's Second Coming trailer.
Peter just think about it. There is more talent abroad to make Galactica stand up and dance better than Universal could even imagine. If we could get everyone on the same page it would be spectaculer!

Aside from the "Cylons were created by Man" crap, this is more a TOS prequel than a TNS prequel. For one thing, Cain is a man. The Battlestar is the real Battlestar, not ribbed. Even with upgrades, I have a hard time believing that this Battlestar would become TNS Ribbedstar. Lasers! Lasers! Lasers!... Also a reptillian Imperious leader.
It is obvious any TNS elements were added on late in the game.
In fact many of the designs seem to come from DeSanto's production art, as I believe this was initially designed to go with the release of his series.
For me this game, even with the TNS garbage tacked on, is the closest thing to a new TOS story/production since the original. It can be hard to play, but with practice, and some valuable cheat codes, it can be done. Although even with cheat codes, the next to last level has driven me insane. Still have yet to get through it.
But oh man... the cut scenes, the music, the story... all very TOS in spirit.

Great job!
Love the attention to detail in the flying characteristics of the Vipers, the two fire modes on the lasers, and especially the 'dog faced' cylons and new Imperious Leader!
Pity about the re-design that happened before it was released, but it still is an excellent game, and an example of how 'some' redesigning can be done without totally fraking a franchise ;)

Peter -
I remember when that footage was peddled around as VFX footage for the miniseries prior to it's release.
The Viper was a dead giveaway.... From the nose on back to the cockpit, it resembles a TOS Viper, but the engine section looks like a miniseries Viper.
The biggest difference is all of the wings as you pointed out.
The one thing you can say about the TOS Viper - is that there are so many versions of it now, it's almost as if the original design is so striking and popular, the best they can do is to "accesorize" to give it an updated look.
The cut scenes from the PS2 game alone are worth the price of buying it - not to mention playing the game. It may not be a TOS-only game, but it's more like TOS than it is like the miniseries or TNS.
Best,
Bryan

Nope, not me.
I did exchange a few e-mails with the game designers and they clearly did all they could to put out a top rate product within some increasingly frustrating constraints. As I recall, the game was mid-way between the original series and GINO because Universal and company wanted to see how GINO went. If the game did well, there were supposed to be follow-ons they went pro-GINO (if the series was a success) or pro-original series if it died at the gate.
That's partly why the viper is a hybird.
Personally, I like it.

Can I express an idea on this thread, for a slighly different topic, but inspired by this thread ?
A website linking to all the different BSG fanfilm downloads.....
We've seen several very good fanfilms, and projects like this....
If there was one prominent website, it would give great examples of the spirit of a Continuation, and help those who can not envisage it.....see what our dreams might look like.
I'd do it myself, but it's not my strong point, but I thought I'd suggest it....

Darrell, it was gravy the second time. I even managed to save it as an mp4!
Thank you so much, I'd not seen the G coming away from the exploding thing in the background or the landing bay sequence or tankers (live) before.
You can even see a landram on the right hand side of the bay!
It just screams Battlestar Galactica too me. As I said before, those Eden guys nailed it.
I know their G is missing a lot of detail but the overall shape looks good, and I'd say IMO that's the best all-over G that I've seen so far (until someone gets off their asstrum and finishes...). ;)

Titon

Ernie there's nearly 30 minutes of cut scene vids in the game. All basically wrapped around both TOS elements and Stu Phillips great musical score from the original series.
Plus you also get to hear not only the music but Dirk Benedicts and Richard Hatch's voices as pilots in the cut scenes. There not Starbuck and Apollo but it's still a thrill to see TOS and how damn good it could look and sound again!

Ernie, i was able to rip the cut scenes off of the game and create a cut scene DVD.
But posting the scenes might be a bit tricky since it's not something i'm sure Universal would take to kindly to.
:)
Peter your right about the landing bay not having as much detail but i'm not to sure that there wasn't some sort of coming together with some details. The model in this game is waaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy to close to have someone get this accurate with it.

That clip from the BSG Videogame introduces their concept of the Hasari, the race that the Colonials assisted when the Cylons tried to subjugate and conquer their world. I have to say, it's radically different from what I envisioned in Dark Exodus...but it was nice, regardless, to see the Hasari get some representation.
I personally think the videogame does a nice job of bridging TOS and TNS in a very cool story...with some of the best CGI cutscenes I have seen regarding starships...especially the Big G. Some of these scenes would've looked so beautiful in a big screen continuation.
Now, if I can just find a cool flight stick to add to the experience of flying a Viper. :)
Respectfully,

There are several fan projects in the works that use Freespace, and Nexus as engines for both TOS and TNS mods.
In the PS2/Xbox games, you will find a LOT of voice talent, aside from Richard Hatch and Dirk Benedict.
You have Kristanna Loken as Iphi. Robin Aitkin Downes as Lt. William Adama. Dwight Schultz as Lord Erebus, the Imperious Leader. And though I cannot remember his name, I think the narrator of the game (who is Commander William Adama) was also the narrator for the Star Wars Radio Play back in 1980.
RH and DB are available as Starbuck and Apollo, but to my knowledge you have to enter a cheat code to get them as your wingmen....unless you play the game EXCEPTIONALLY well.
I will say this though: RH and DB sound better in their alternate roles in the game than they do when you hear them as Apollo and Starbuck. When you hear them speak as Apollo and Starbuck, it just sounds so.....forced, and fake. They sound much more natural in their alternate roles in the opening cutscene of the game.
The game allows you to go back to previous missions with your Viper upgrades and replay them with the upgrades, possibly improving your previous ratings in the game, and unlocking other extras.
Now, for those of you who have seen my teaser trailer for Battlestar Galactica: Dark Exodus, (and know the game well enough) you will notice that I used models that I videoed from the game (using a cheapoid 20 dollar digital video camera), and with considerable effort, cut/paste them as animated elements in my teaser.
Basically, I used a Colonial Viper in first person mode as a sort of camera when flying about the Big G in the game. (Using my cheapoid digicam to film the footage onto my computer.) Then, I had to break the footage down frame by frame. Then, I had to use PhotoImpression (a slightly lesser cousin to PhotoShop) to eliminate (as much as possible) the HUD data in the footage. Then came the tedious process of cutting/pasting the appropriate models from the footage onto bitmapped white backgrounds in MSPaint. After that, I superimposed those backgrounds onto star backgrounds I gathered off the internet. Then, came the process of hand animating lasers, thrusterfire, etc.
My favorite shots from the Dark Exodus teaser trailer were:
1. The Viper Launch sequence. I used an ingame model of the back of a Viper (I think I had to use a Mark III), and placed it in a background of a TOS launchtube. I hand animated the thruster fire. In the oncoming shot of the Viper, I just used the standard launch footage with an actual Viper.
2. The Galactica, heavilly damaged, on fire, and plummeting towards Earth. This is probably my ABSOLUTE favorite composite. I cut/paste the big G from a cutscene in the game, placed it onto a large Earth background. I made the Earth background bigger than the actual frame itself so I could give the background the illusion of movement.
3. Seeing a battlestar come out of the sun, with a squadron of Vipers blazing their laser cannons. That was a mix of cutpasting footage from the videogame, and the original series. The lasers were hand animated. And that sun, believe it or not, was an LED flashlight.
If you want to see the teaser trailer, go to my Yahoo group and join:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BSGCon
Look in Files, and then download from the link "Dark Exodus DC Teaser." It is in .wmv format, so it should run on Windows Media Player, or any player that supports .wmv format. It took me two and a half months to create the teaser. And if it intrigues you enough, then go ahead and read Battlestar Galactica: Dark Exodus. :)
(End of shameless self-promotion).
In anycase, you can find the BSG videogame at Wal-Mart, or some of the other retail stores, and/or the usual vidgame stores like Babbages, Software Etc., Gamestop, and so forth for 20 bucks, NEW. I think you will also find some game hints in the videogames section of Colonial Fleets.
Respectfully,
