Well, I guess that it's official. Seeing a trailer tonight on TV, (quite a cool one, btw), and the rating for Star Wars Episode III, Revenge of the Sith is PG-13. I expect this movie TO ROCK!!!!!!
Folks, let's pray that Lucas got it right this time. :)
Respectfully,

Over here in the UK, the BBFC have given Revenge of the Sith a '12A' rating (12A - No one younger than 12 can be admitted unless accompanied by an adult). They have also given the following advice (probably to be used in the advertising - "Contains moderate fantasy violence and scary scenes").

Hell Yeah, this will ROCK
I remember that they 12A came about because of Spider-Man I, where loads of kids couldn't see and their parents complained about it

The use of the letter 'A' is something that I find poorly thought out.
A few times before when I have gone into the cinema, there have been kids at the door asking which movie people are going in to. If it is the one they want, they will ask to go in with you. That is because 'accompanied' doesn't mean 'accompanied by a parent, responsible adult, or that you have to even know the person'.
So children ask strangers to take them into a darkened room, quite often for a lesser known film that darkened room won't be well populated.
It would seem to me that the BBFC have tried to protect kids from 'fantasy' violent scenes on film, whilst creating a situation where (kids being kids) run risks of 'real' violence or worse from absolute strangers.

Ernie, that's quite a scary thought to a parent.
I'm glad it's going PG-13 here, at least it will keep folks from bringing too young of kids to it hopefully.

I got my tickets!! Woo hoo! 12:01am, May 19th! My ex sweetheart, or whatever you want to call her in reference to what we had, has a friend who through a connection got him and her tickets to some charity screening on the 16th. I told her I was happy for her, but I'm really not. I'm jealous...bad me! LOL

I am certainly going to see EpIII, however, I have patience for just one week(ish) more to wait until the crowds have passed then go and see it. I have been waiting for it for years already, I can wait another few days....
Jewels, I can understand that it is quite a scary though for a parent, however, thinking back to my childhood I am sure it would have been the first thing I would have done, and I'm not surprised that kids would think of it....
Besides, before age 12 I had watched far worse movies than a Star Wars movie, and seen far worse things in the playground...

I wait until the weekends too, but I usually buy my tickets on Fandango.com in advance so I don't have to stand in line to buy them and you can avoid "sold out syndrome" at the same time. It's 1.00 more per ticket, but worth it in the trouble saved...

I use the automated ATM ticket purchasing machines they have near the ticket windows. I don't know if most people don't know what they are or just don't like them, but there's never a wait at them and there's no service fee.

I'm not sure I agree with you there. The weekends are the busier times because of so many people being off work. When Star Wars I was scheduled to open on the Friday of Memorial Day Weekend, they moved it back to Wendsday to enable more people to see before the weekend crowds filled the theatres.
Thanks about the "bites" statement. :)

That's a good thought. My wife has heard similar stories so we're starting to talk about it. I never go to an opening week show of these big blockbusters, too much of a crowd, so we still have time. I may listen through the school grapevine for what other parents think too.
In the mean time my son's content to challenge me to duels with our toy light sabers. He acts like Yoda and tells me I'm Darth Vader.
The Oedipal implications of this are pretty amusing  ....

Oedipal implications
eh ? What does this mean. Please forgive an ignorant young man !
When I was a kid, my father would watch a film them make the decision himself. Or in one case, go to a local rock concert to see how the crowd outside was behaving then ask mum to bring me (then 6 years old) along.
Interestingly though, my father was more liberal that my mother because he was a fan of such things himself (concerts and sci-fi) I wonder if being a fan will make it more likely for a parent to consider it ok for a child to see ?

It was so dark outside we used flash lights (we made the beams tight) and we played a long time both taking turns at dying glorious deaths LOL! :D ;)

eh ? What does this mean. Please forgive an ignorant young man !
Not ignorant at all, just not steeped in arcane psych theory, there are far worse fates. ;)
In a small nutshell, in psychoanalytic developmental theory, children are thought to go through a stage where they begin to resent and challenge their same sex parent for the affection of their opposite sex parent. This is thought to manifest as giving the same sex parent a hard time for a while. The child is thought to eventually identify with the same sex parent which has implications for personality development. It's called the Oedipus complex because of the Greek play in which the character Oedipus unknowingly kills his father and marries his mother. Of all the critique directed at Freud's psychoanalytic theory, this part is a regular favorite. The joke was that my 6 year old casts me as the big bad jedi/sith while casting himself as the little jedi master, very much a fantasy with Oedipal overtones.

Let me just add this one little thing to the question of whether to let your kid see the movie or not. If they've watched and are fans of the other Star Wars movies, and you don't let them see this one. They will always remember that. You may not think something like that would carry on with a kid, but whether you ever find out about it or not, I assure you they will remember that for the rest of their lives.

"I think the burning scene alone is what gave this film the PG-13 rating."
The aboce quote was taken from the news article I linked to. If the author is right that this scene was one of the makor reasons that it was given a PG13 (or here in the UK PG12A) then why didn't they cut this one scene ?
I think there are plenty of ways to get accross what has happened without causing the BBFC to give it a rating that would loose many of your younger customer fanbase.... I am surprised this was left it.
I know how I would feel if I were a kid who was a big Star Wars Fan and couldn't see the new movie.
Yes, I too know how it would feel....not very nice....especially when I would be being relentlessly marketed to by dozens of toys, brands and offers.
It was this same argument over Spiderman that lead to the introduction of the 12A rule here in the UK. Yet this has done nothing to solve the problem....
But since I am over 12 I suppose it doesn't matter for me :)

Ernie,
I think I'll take your advice and wait for a few comments from people who go to see it right off the hop. The theater will allow my daughter in, it's just that as her Mum is it a movie I really want to take her to see ( on the big screen things are much scarier ) that's over an hour away ( I live out in the boondocks ) and wait in line forever for a film that might scare the pants off her?

So, with all this excitement around here for the new movie, what were you guys' opinions of the last two. I have several friends who were so dissappointed that they aren't looking forward to ROTS at all.
I really didn't care for TPM myself. Like most everbody else I thought it lacked most of the charm of the original trilogy. Looking back at it, I understand better what Lucas was going for and appreciate that he was creating a movie targeted at kids the age of young Anakin. But as someone who grew up on Star Wars, I selfishly felt like the movies should be targeted at me.
But I really enjoyed AOTC. It seemed to be much broader and enjoyable for a wider range of viewers. There was still the silly antics for kids, but there was also a much darker element for adults to follow. Assuming that what Lucas says is true and ROTS follows that same arc, then this movie should be the most interesting for us who grew up on Star Wars but aren't kids anymore.

Yeah AOTC is a lot lot better than TPM, but as good as the OT.

I thought Phantom Menace was alright, but it felt more like a footnote than an actual episode of the movie series.
Darth Maul was a character that they should have kept around up until ROTS. I am also one of the few who actually likes Jar Jar Binks. Personally, I would LOVE to see SW fans that hate him, get riled by keeping him alive in ROTS....or at least keeping his fate unknown. :D (But, if he gets bumped off, I ain't gonna cry over it.)
Attack of the Clones I thought was a much better movie...especially in terms of sheer action. The ground battle on Geonosis was incredible. The lightsaber battle between Yoda and Dooku was worth the price of admission, but it should've been a little longer. Oh well....at least we'll get to see Kermit's father in another lightsaber battle in ROTS. And Natalie Portman has one sexy l'il bottom.

I liked jar Jar too, but not the very first time I saw him.....i thought it was a bit distracting. But after the first time it was fine and I really saw where George was going with it. I just watched it again sunday night and i have to say......i like it. I am very excited about Epi III

Haveke,
I think you are right Qui-Gon forsaw his death. Even when Anakin says "Jedi can't die" and Qui-Gon says "I wish that were so" I think it was interesting on both of their parts.
We watch AOTC last night to be fully ready for III and it was fun..........I pick up some more little tidbits(every time I watch SW movies) I loved Obi-Wan in this movie......he had some great little comedy lines esp "Anakin, why do I feel you are going to be the death of me"........whoa.
